Preseason all-state: Chubb, Sandy Creek players headline AAAA team

Nick Chubb, the Cedartown running back who set a regular-season state record with 2,721 rushing yards in 2012, heads the preseason all-state team in Class AAAA. Chubb has committed to Georgia.

Cole Garvin, the quarterback who led Sandy Creek to a state championship, is one of four members of the team from the defending title-holders. WR Demarre Kitt (committed to Clemson), DL Chris Williams (Ole Miss), junior RB Eric Swinney and LB Khari Lain also made the team.

The AAAA team required some shuffling and regrettable omissions because of excessive depth at certain positions. Monroe Area QB Stanton Truitt, one of GHSF Daily’s Top 44 players statewide, was beaten out by Garvin and “athlete” Donquell Green, Burke County’s similar dual-threat quarterback.

Also missing out at quarterback were prolific passers Charles Stafford of Westover and Zach Giddens of LaGrange, each of whom threw for about 3,000 yards last season. Dalton sophomore Kelvis Rhodes, who rushed for more than 1,528 yards as a sophomore, likely will be the leading rusher among players statewide not on a preseason all-state team.

Kendall Baker, a Georgia-committed lineman from Marist, was placed on offense, his recruited position, instead of his more familiar high school position on defense, which is fraught with other major Division I prospects.

Also conspicuous on offense is sophomore lineman Ben Cleveland of Stephens County, who has played only one season of high school football but has offers from Georgia to Texas.

Regarding UGA commit Kendall Baker, your AJC colleague said in an earlier published story: “The Bulldogs talked to him strictly about defense …” http://www.ajc.com/weblogs/college-recruiting/2013/jul/03/marist-lineman-commits-uga-over-auburn-and-fsu/

Charles Stafford attends Monroe H.S., not Westover. Please correct that, don’t need any Monroe alumnus getting on here angry.

I’m in disagreement for adding a soph. to the list, if this is taking away from a Senior, whom this is their last year, and a soph. has 2 more chances at making the list. It should go to an uppercalssman.

@PBJ… If a kid has all state talent who cares what grade he’s in. Your logic of it should go to a upperclassmen is WEAK. I guess you also think it’s wrong for freshman and sophomores to play on varsity teams also so a upperclassman could have that roster spot huh?

Talent, not political correctness, PBJ. The rest of the world should work like that.

Judging from the talent listed it looks like Sandy Creek at the top (again) with Carrollton,Monroe Area,Marist and others chasing. Who will be the surprise team(s) this year?

Hey, AAAA fans: I’ll be covering the classification this season and wanted to drop my email in here. I’m going to really try hard to cover the entire state, but with 77 teams in AAAA, I’ll need some help.
Please feel free to send me pictures, game highlights and off-the-field accomplishments to davidpurdumsports@gmail.com. Thanks and good luck to everyone this season … David Purdum.

I was the National Recruiter for Ohio State before coaching in the NFL for 18 seasons. The Gainesville QB Watson is the best QB prospect I’ve seen since I quit coaching.

Agree with you on Watson-but we are talking AAAA here.
