Falcons to hold scrimmage in Gainesville
The Atlanta Falcons will have a scrimmage and fan fest tonight at Gainesville’s City Park Stadium. Admission is free. It is the sixth Kia Motors Friday Night Lights scrimmage that the Falcons have held at a Georgia high school near their training camp in Flowery Branch. Gates open at 6 p.m., and the Falcons will take the field at 6:45 p.m. Previous scrimmages have taken place at Mill Creek (2008), Brookwood (2009), North Gwinnett (2010), Norcross (2011) and Peachtree Ridge (2012).
Nix returning to sidelines as assistant
Conrad Nix, the 300-game-winning coach who led Northside of Warner Robins to state championships in 2006 and 2007 before his 2010 retirement, will be back on the sidelines this fall. He’ll be an assistant to his son, Patrick Nix, the new head coach of Scottsboro High in Alabama. Conrad Nix grew up in Alabama.
Thomas County Central’s Choice pulling double duty
Thomas County Central QB Adam Choice will be a two-say starter this season, playing quarterback and cornerback, partly because TCC graduated its entire secondary from last season, but also because TCC coach Bill Shaver saw Marist do the same last season with a similar option QB, Myles Willis.
Lowndes in talks for game against Plant High
Lowndes’ pre-Region 1-AAAAAA schedule is notoriously soft again this season, with four teams with a combined record of 7-33 last season. So it’s nice to hear that the Vikings are talking with Plant High of Tampa (Aaron Murray’s former school) about a game next season.
Can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em?
While defending its 2011 state championship, Grayson lost to North Gwinnett 28-10 in the second round of the Class AAAAAA playoffs last season. Robert Andrews, Grayson’s highly regarded defensive coordinator, has moved over to North Gwinnett in the same position. The real story isn’t that juicy, though. Andrews was hired as head coach at East Jackson, but he had a change of heart because of cutbacks in the Jackson County School System. Meanwhile, North Gwinnett’s defensive coordinator, Mo Dixon, left for Byrnes (S.C.) High. In the right place at the right time, Andrews found work at North Gwinnett.
GHSF Daily would like to run a Random Stuff feature each Friday on AJC.com, but readers and coaches will have to help. The ideal item is one that doesn’t merit a full story but is interesting nonetheless.
