North Cobb QB shines at National 7-on-7

Update: North Cobb and North Gwinnett each reached the semifinals Friday in Hoover, Ala., at the National Select 7-on-7 passing tournament. The tournament was won by Kenton of Ohio, which beat North Gwinnett. North Cobb lost to runner-up Byrnes (S.C.). Jefferson County made the quarterfinals and lost to North Gwinnett.

North Cobb quarterback Tyler Queen was named the top offensive performer through pool play at the National Select 7-on-7 passing tournament Thursday in Hoover, Ala., by

Queen led his team to a 7-0 record on Thursday. North Cobb is seeded No. 2 for Friday’s championship bracket. Other Georgia teams and their seeds are North Gwinnett (No. 9), Lassiter (No. 10), Valdosta (No. 15), Jefferson County (No. 17) and Alpharetta (No. 18).

The No. 1 seed in the 32-team field is Dutch Fork of South Carolina.

Here is the assessment of staff writers Woody Wommack and Kynon Dodington on Queen, a junior who led North Cobb to the Class AAAAAA semifinals last season:

‘’Queen was excellent all afternoon. At times he trusts his arm too much, but it’s not a bad thing in the 7-on-7 setting because he misses small. He fit the ball in tight coverage and surprised some of his receivers with his RPM’s. … One thing that won’t show up in the stat sheet is his leadership ability. He demands perfection and you can tell he is the son of a coach.’’

Queen’s father, Shane Queen, is North Cobb’s head coach.

Other Georgia players who made Rivals’ top 10 were Valdosta WR Alex Cason (No. 2), Lassiter WR Quincy Perdue (No. 4) and North Gwinnett QB Hayden Sphire (No. 10). Sphire also is the son of a head coach, North Gwinnett’s Bob Sphire.

One correction, first sentence has it as North Gwinnett when it should be North Cobb. Way to go TQ!

Not news to me. Tyler is an excellent quarterback. Not only that but he is a good kid with a great attitude. I had an opportunity to speak to him after the Lovejoy game last season and he seems to have his head on straight. He has so much upside, it would be unthinkable for this kid not to excel. North Cobb has nucleus of him, Herrod and a nice receiver, whose name I can’t remember right now. I have them (North) in my top 5.

@warrior for life, you’re the ones that give us a bad name, when in reality, LJ actually was respectful, they chanted at the end just like Friday nights are supposed to be, the players were good kids as well, no issues . How do I know this, bc I was on the sideline and saw it firsthand. Beat us straight up and we won’t forget it. The black thug comment is uncalled for. Langston-Hughes did some things that were inappropriate and unsportsmanship but that’s for another day……
