The 2013 GHSA lacrosse championships will see several past champions looking for even more hardware. The Milton girls have won seven titles over the last eight years while Westminster has won a combined five titles in boys and girls lacrosse. Lambert has claimed the past two Class A-AAAA boys’ titles.
Earlier this season, Lambert’s (15-6) three-year, 43-game winning streak came to a close, but the Longhorns are back in the Class AAAAAA finals. Junior Sean Carruthers scored five goals in Lambert’s first-round victory.
Lambert will face Centennial (18-3), a team that lost just once during the regular season to a Georgia opponent. The Knights have defeated East Coweta, Lassiter and Harrison for a chance at the state title. Nathan Solomon and Brendan Spence have proven to be quite potent on the attack.
Westminster (17-4) has entered the postseason with just four losses during the regular season, and the Wildcats have already avenged one of those losses with a 6-5 win over Decatur in the A-AAAAA semifinals. Northview (19-2) defeated Westminster in March and now awaits the Wildcats in the finals. The Titans eliminated McIntosh, Pope and Lovett this postseason.
The Westminster girls (17-2-2) have won the last three A-AAAA state titles and now seek to take out a McIntosh program they defeated last year in the championship match and two years ago in the semifinals. Westminster is paced by seniors Caroline Heys and Ansley Walker as well as freshman Cabel Zakas. McIntosh (14-3-1), which took out Northview in the semifinals, is seeking its first GHSA state title.
Tim Godby’s Milton Eagles (17-3) have only lost four games to opponents from Georgia since 2005. Seniors Caroline Youngs and Lydia Cassada lead the No. 1 team in the latest laxpower.com national poll. Lassiter (15-5-1) should prove to be a tough matchup as the Trojans can score at will. The offense averaged 16.5 goals per game this year and blasted previously-undefeated Centennial 18-2 in the quarterfinals.
