Soccer: No. 1 Lassiter boys shocked in first round

By Stephen Black

Score Atlanta

Class AAAAAA No. 1 Lassiter lost to South Gwinnett 2-1 in a mammoth upset tonight in the first round of the boys soccer state playoffs. The visiting Comets took a 1-0 lead into halftime when Austin Varney scored in the third minute, but Lassiter rallied to tie the game behind a goal by senior forward Trey Luscre in the 38th minute. Senior midfielder Clay Dimick assisted on the goal with a corner kick.

South Gwinnett, however, re-took the lead with two minutes remaining in the contest when Derek Denton connected on a header.

Lassiter finishes its season 16-1 while South Gwinnett (11-4-1) will advance to the second round. The Trojans had not given up a goal in six games coming into the playoffs and had only been scored upon in five matches during the regular season. The lone goal is the fewest scored by Lassiter since a 1-0 win over Pope on Feb. 26.

CONGRATULATIONS to the South Gwinnett Comets !!!

Lassiter Trojans had a great soccer team but ranking will not win matches.

Georgia has some of the best high school soccer teams in the nation.

Tip your hat to the Comets, they stole one. Anyone at the game will attest that Lassiter dominated possession and had the better of the play but what counts is the ball in the back of the net. Great season for the Trojans. Get em next year.

Hooray for underdogs everywhere! Attaboy Comets! (Who were the real trojans last night?)

BTW, terrible report Mr. Black. You name the Lassiter player who scored the tying goal and the assist but neither of the players who scored the S Gwinnett goals!!! Biased? Sore?

Hopefully a Comet fan will write in and correct this and give them the recognition they are due.

STF: I agree. For soccer fans this is a great time of year!

Lakeside Boys had a tough match against Kell on Tuesday, narrowly escaping with a 5-4 win – Kell has a good team. Lakeside girls had a bit easier time against the Cambridge girls with a 2-0 win. AAAAA looks to be quite a tournament.

Who is coaching the South Gwinnett team these days? Is Walt Alexander still coaching, or has someone else taken that over?

Do you S Gwinnett fans know, that David Greene and David Pollack once played on the same little league team?
