Class AAAAAA No. 1 Lassiter lost to South Gwinnett 2-1 in a mammoth upset tonight in the first round of the boys soccer state playoffs. The visiting Comets took a 1-0 lead into halftime when Austin Varney scored in the third minute, but Lassiter rallied to tie the game behind a goal by senior forward Trey Luscre in the 38th minute. Senior midfielder Clay Dimick assisted on the goal with a corner kick.
South Gwinnett, however, re-took the lead with two minutes remaining in the contest when Derek Denton connected on a header.
Lassiter finishes its season 16-1 while South Gwinnett (11-4-1) will advance to the second round. The Trojans had not given up a goal in six games coming into the playoffs and had only been scored upon in five matches during the regular season.
