Baseball: Three new No. 1’s highlight rankings

By Score Atlanta

We have a new No. 1 in Class AAAAAA as Johns Creek, winners of 10 of its last 12 games, takes over. The Gladiators knocked off former No. 1 Lambert last week. Speaking of the Longhorns, Lambert has lost four of five games and tumbles to No. 5. Marietta suffered an upset loss to Lakeside-DeKalb and fell to No. 3 while Walton lost two recent games and drops to No. 8.

Class AAAAA also sports a new top-ranked team as Gainesville ascended to No. 1 after a 2-game sweep of last week’s No. 1, Loganville. Meanwhile, Pope and East Paulding entered the poll after long win streaks against competitive region competition.

Griffin entered the Class AAAA rankings after Carrollton, losers of two games last week, dropped out.

In Class AAA, North Oconee and Chapel Hill each dove into the top 10 as a result of recent winning streaks.

Pepperell entered the Class AA top five after beating Bremen 5-0 to put an exclamation on the Dragons’ 14-game winning streak. Calhoun re-entered the top 10 and Lamar County debuted in the poll riding a 5-game winning streak.

Holy Innocents’ debuted in Class A-Private as the Golden Bears have not lost a game to anyone not named ELCA in Class A this season. HIES replaced Darlington, which was upset by Trion. In the Class A-Public rankings, Gordon Lee jumped to No. 1 as both Charlton County and ECI took losses last week.

I agree with the rankings, but I would have Mceachern and Marietta 1 and 2. I would have to give Mceachern the edge since they have a better overall record and they split with Marietta. Marietta’s loss on Friday is a little deceiving since mostly JV players played all game. Whoever get the #1 seed out of region 4 has homefield throughout the playoffs, so as of now Marietta and Mceachen would have a coin flip. IMO Marietta has the best pitching in 6A and Mceachern may have the best offense

The Coaches continue to list Cartersville as the #2 team in their latest AAA poll

How is Westminster ranked behind of us (Lovett), they beat us three out of three times. This is messed up.

The Coaches Poll is a joke. Hasn’t been changed since March 16.

McEachern has got to be #1 right now. It is rather comical that Mill Creek is #10 and North Gwinnett isn’t ranked.

Marietta, Walton, & Lambert are second in their regions but ranked. Lambert is two games back and heading downhill in a hurry with 3 region losses in their last 4 region games. They shouldn’t even be in the top 20.

Parkview is #3 in Region 8-AAAAAA but ranked, while Grayson is ignored again. Parkview lost to South Gwinnett, but somehow they are ranked 3 spots higher? Doesn’t add up at all. Grayson lost on an error by 1 run to Parkview, but killed South Gwinnett 10-4 this past saturday. The paper read something like this, “What happened to South?”…Grayson should be ranked period.

NG is 15-6/8-1 and has won 12 out of their last 14 games. They have only allowed more than 3 runs twice during that stretch. The have 2 aces (Baca, Brown) and 2 dependable starters also. Their lineup doesn’t clear the fences much, but they are consistent 1-9, primarily hitting singles and doubles. Clutch hitting and solid defense are their bread and butter. Rankings are opinions, but NG should be ranked without question.

- Beat MC and Lambert, lost by 1 to Walton and lost by 3 to Johns Creek. They play at MC tonight.

But you are right about it being a HUGE JOKE

@Marrietta Fan…The title runs through Gwinnett County. Parkview won’t 3peat but a team from Gwinnett will win it all this year. McEachern struggles against good lefties.

just wondering the reasoning for having Eastside at #5 in AAAA when they have lost to Stephens Co and Lanier in the last week. interesting to see what will happen after today’s game with Stephens Co who is on a roll.

Parkview went UP in the rankings even though there are 3rd place in Region 8? How can you be the number 4 team in the State when you are 3rd place in your own region? Why are Grayson and NG not ranked? Again this poll is a joke.

Milton seems to be flying under the radar. 9-1 in region play. Very talented and deep pitching staff. Best pitcher from last year(ga Tech signee) is hurt and not even pitching. I would still put the other three starters against anyone in the state. All three starters would be #1 starters on most every team. They have given up one run in last three games. I would not hand the title to a Gwinnett team yet. The playoffs are going to be a lot of fun!

The only injustices on the coaches’ poll is Grayon and Lowndes being left off. The order of the top 10 might not be too hot, but at least those schools are nod worthy. Plus, they recognized North Gwinnett instead of Parkview and even showed Newnan some love. Those top two in Region 3 can’t help that the rest of the region is no good. They just keep winning.

As for you poll bashers, let’s get a parent/fan poll going. That thing would have enough bias and ignorance laced in it to pass as a House Bill. I mean, surely we know more than these coaches. We could really come up with something to call “a joke.”

While I’m in the mood, do the computers at AJC not observe daylight savings? That last post I made was totally at 11:57 pm.
