Baseball: Westminster takes over No. 1 in AA

By Score Atlanta

The state’s largest classification saw some of its top teams lose big games this past week, including Mill Creek, which fell to No. 10, and Parkview, which dropped to No. 6. South Gwinnett moved into the poll at No. 9 after defeating Parkview Monday to move to 12-3 overall. McEachern returned to the poll on an 8-game winning streak.

Whitewater streaked its way into the Class AAAAA rankings after winning six straight including victories over Starr’s Mill and Ola recently. The 19-1 demolition of Ola Wednesday dropped Ola to No. 7.

In Class AAAA, Alexander edge Carrollton Tuesday 4-3 and the two programs swapped places in the poll. Griffin fell out after a loss to Jonesboro and was replaced by region-rival Spalding. Lanier got whipped by Stephens County and now finds itself out of the top five ranked No. 7.

Cartersville, on an 11-game winning streak, debuted in the top five in Class AAA. Appling County, meanwhile, evened the season series with Tattnall County and moved up to No. 7 while Pierce County took Tattnall’s spot at No. 4.

Class AA has a new No. 1 as Westminster swept a 3-game series from previously top-ranked Lovett. Bremen and Pepperell, riding long winning streaks of 14 and eight games respectively, rocketed up this week while Cook re-entered the list at No. 10 after wins over Valdosta and Fitzgerald.

The Class A rankings stayed the same for the Private classification, while Johnson County debuted in the Public rankings at No. 5 as Schley County fell out after a loss to Irwin County.

Big games in 4AAAAAA today and Friday between 3rd ranked Marietta and 8th ranked Mceachern. These games could determine the region champion

What does 12-3 (9-1) East Paulding have to do to get into the top ten?

So South Gwinnett beats Parkview and they are #9 while Parkview is 6? wow.

How about Norcross or Peachtree Ridge, realtalk? Run ruled South Gwinnett and not even ranked.

Well Norcross is 2-4 in region and PTR is 9-7 I assuming that’s why. SG is undefeated in Region 8, and is 14-2.

Peachtree Ridge has lost to North Gwinnett and Mill Creek. North Gwinnett has beaten Mill Creek, and is undefeated in Region 7. North Gwinnett should be ranked and above Mill Creek.

Region 8 is obviously down this year because both Grayson and Parkview are not playing well (Parkview lost 10-0 on Saturday). Yes, South is 14-3. South has one loss is to Loganville which is understandable but the other two losses are to Peachtree Ridge and Norcross, both Region 7 teams.

Parkview has also lost to Collins Hill, another Region 7 team. I think the bottom line is that Region 8 is overrated and Region 7 is just better. However, we will see what happens come play off time.
