Basketball: Who is your player of the year?
The basketball season is done, and 14 teams are champions. All that’s left is the accolades. The AJC’s all-state team will be announced in less than two weeks.
Who were the players of the year?
On the girls side, the leading contender is Diamond DeShields of Norcross. She has won two national player of the year awards, and her team won a third state title in her four seasons as a starter. Other top players include DeShields’ teammate, Shayla Cooper; North Gwinnett’s Lexie Brown; and Asia Durr of St. Pius.
On the boys side, expect more debate.
Brandon Goodwin looked pretty good in the Class AAAAAA final against Hillgrove. He scored 22 points (7-for-11 from the field) and had seven rebounds.
Johnson-Savannah guard Tim Quarterman, who has signed with LSU, scored 21 in the victory over Savannah in the AAA final.
Eagle’s Landing has several blue-chip recruits on its AAAA championship team. Desmond Ringer had a monster championship game with 17 points (8-of-9 shooting) with 14 rebounds.
Columbia point guard Tahj Shamsid Deen scored 21 points in a losing cause. Deen’s record as a starter in the state playoffs was 19-1.
Another couple of players who looked good last week in the state finals was Greater Atlanta Christian’s Isaiah Wilkins and Tosin Mehinti of Greenforest Christian.
But playing for a state championship team is not a requirement. Top players whose teams were stopped short include Brannen Greene of Tift County, Ahmed Hill of Aquinas, Tadric Jackson of Tift County and Jakeenan Grant of Effingham County.

Brandon Goodwin gets my vote, he lead his team in every crucial game that got us to where we needed to be. He was our true leader all year and has more heart and will to win than any player I have seen this year.

KEVIS MARTIN @ Manchester High School.. Very versatile player with long stride and hard to defend. #4.. He’s the truth. Don’t know the kid personally but seen him play over the summer and region playoffs. He will put the best of them in the rim…

Tajh Shamsid Deen hands down, look at his body work, no one else can compare. 4 year starter 3 state championships. only one loss in playoffs in four years, much respect for Eagles Landing but Tahj was expected to lead his team and he did just that.

For what it’s worth, here are my two cents worth: Brannen Greene was the best player in the state this year. He was the only underclassman who played in the All American game last year from Georgia and scored 12 points. He averaged about 30 ppg for a very good team. He is going to Kansas. I do like Goodwin a lot though and feel he has gotten better and better. His performance in the championship game was the difference. Maybe the most underrated player in the state is Isaiah Wilkins for GAC. He averaged almost a triple double this year in points, rebounds, and blocked shots. He is only a junior. BTW, it’s great seeing so many former Georgia High School players doing well at the next level: Brandon Morris, Kenny Gaines, Chris Bolden, Charles Mann, Jordan Adams, Shannon Scott, et al.

The most unselfish player in the state of Georgia.
Jalen is a natural 6’3 point guard. He has played every position for Benjamin E. Mays High school.
He averaged 12 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocked shots per game.
Jalen help lead the Raiders to the class AAAAA sweet sixteen.

@HubertGreen It was 3 teams from Cobb in the final 4. Kyle Castlin led a very under the radar team to the finals. Elijah Staley led Wheeler to the final 4 and North Cobb has a couple of players. Kyle Caslin is very underrated. Elijah Staley is another very underrated player who could be Athelete of the year. If it is an award given for that. He led Wheeler to the State Tourny as a QB Also made a final 4 run. If either of the 2 played in AA they would average 30 a game.

I’d have a give the nod to Tajh Shamsid Deen of Columbia. He just missed joining a small fraternity of starting for a four time state champion. He was expected to lead his team this season and did. If you consider his body of work of his four years, it’s hard to find someone else that had as much impact on their team. He played PG, which meant he had the ball in his hands most of the time.
It is a no brainer on the girls side, Diamond DeShields will always be mentioned with Maya Moore as one of the top girls players in the history of GA HS basketball.

Tahj Shamsid-Deen: 4 year starter, 3 State Title; 1 State Runnerup; 4 times Region Player of the Year; 3 times All State; 3 times all Metro Team by Atl Tipoff Club; Holds assist record in Georgia; only 1 playoff loss in his high school career. No other senior have done this body of work. He’s a True leader as he has been throughout his HS career.

For the girls, I think it’s a toss up between Diamond Deshield and Asia Durr. It really amazes me that Asia Durr is a sophomore and her name is being mentioned with the top seniors. The kid has game like I’ve never seen before

Depends on if you give it to the best player on the best team, or the best overall player. If it’s the later I would think Brannen Greene, Ahmed Hill, and Jakeenan Gant should all win it. I saw Ahmed Hill almost take his team to the finals by himself.

He may not be the player of the year but he atleast deserves some talk. Lee Moore averaged somewhere in the mid 20s per game on a team that was loaded with players that could all average 20 and go off for 40 any night. He put this team on his back many games when NC was down. He brought them back when they were down by 7 in the 4th against Tift. He brought NC back when they were down 14 to hillgrove in the region final and he almost did it again against Norcross. Lee Moore may have been the most underrated player in the state this year. And if Saxon Steele didnt get injured he’d be in the talk too. Great season Warriors! If I had to pick i’d probably pick Greene. That kid can straight up shoot and I saw all of it when he played NC in the Elite 8.

Norcross was 11-6 for their first 17 games and 17-0 for their last 17. They beat their 4 state opponents by 106 points or by an avg of 26.5 points each. With that kind of high performance at the end of the season, Brandon Goodwin, Norcross’ leader, should be awarded the AAAAAA player of the year

Hello friends. Of course I’m partial to my Tift County Blue Devil Brannen Greene however I feel more strongly that the player of the year should be a player who led his team to a state title. I do predict this however: fans of GHSA basketball that are also fans of college basketball will become very familiar with Brannen Greene of Tift during his Kansas Jayhawk career.

Tim Quarterman for theboy’s state player of the year. He led his team in every game on offense and defense, and made sure every one was involved too. He is a complete package!! Brandon Greene yes he averaged 30ppg but when the game count Tift county didn’t move on. Tim Quarterman scored 36 against oakhill and could had went to any of these national ranked prep school and started. My vote Tim Quarterman!!!!!

Hopefully, the AJC will surprise us with a list that doesn’t include the same old predictable names. I’ve seen three or four all-state lists in the past few weeks and I’m puzzled (not really, lol) at how they were selected. Clearly Shamsid Deen (who is not on a team full of powerhouses this year) is deserving of the all state honor.
However, AJC, why don’t you surprise us with a list of kids that played exceptionally well AGAINST some of these power teams; we all know who those teams are. What’s impressive about a team full of “great” players beating teams that have one or two good players? A player that goes to his zone school can’t help it if he doesn’t have the help on his team to win consistently like some of the tournament winners.
I agree with tweezy706 about being a complete package. Some of these 1st Team All Stars have no D-1 offers while kids that have signed with SEC schools or have several D-1 offers don’t even get an honorable mention. Thank goodness college coaches don’t make the same arbitrary decisions and clearly don’t use the same criteria (in many cases) as these selection committees, OR it’s based on things other than talent.
We can probably come up with some good projections if you tell us what YOUR criteria is.

I may be biased, but Lee Moore’s name has to be mentioned. In every big game he shined. His team finished ranked 2nd in the state even after losing the starting pg due to injury (get well Sax). He guarded the other teams top player. Went head to head with Brannen Green and came out on top. Pulled NC back from being blown out vs Norcross and carried the team on his back. Great body control, good shooter, he can do it all.
On the girls side Diamond is a once in a lifetime player. I appreciate the fact that she remains humble when she is interviewed or when you speak with her.
I do agree with Justsayin that I do hope now with the big giants graduating, it’s time for writers to do a little bit more research and stop giving us the same ole people. There are other kids busting their hump that go on to succesful college careers that deserve some love.

It’s a high school all-state team, not recruiting rankings. Some of these players committed to D-1 programs don’t have the endorsement of their region’s coaches as far as what they contribute to their high school times. Sometimes they don’t have the endorsement of their own head coach. Can’t tell you how many times in football or basketball that a coach will tell me something like, “He’s signed with UConn (just to pick a name out of a hat), but my best player this season was this guy who doesn’t have an offer.”

While all the attention from local media focused on the larger schools Junior Point Guard Muhammad Hamilton of W.D. Mohammed had a Player of Year season. Not only leading the Caliphs to their best season ever and eventual Final 8 finish in the State Tourney, but he also engineered the upset of eventual Class A (Private) champion Greenforest.

Recruiters need to come down in the smaller towns. Plenty of talent around Columbus and surrounding areas. Real talent and hard core players. Sean Buffen @ Spencer.. Jamar Sheppard @ Jordan, Ronnie Battles @ Central, Kevis Martin @ Manchester, Tony Palmer @ Jordan. I’m just naming a few players but the south is loaded with talent. We don’t get the exposure down there, The coaches don’t get the kids out there and don’t seem to care. Too Much talent for these kids not to get recognize or scholarship offers. I can go back years and name some players that couldve wen’t to the next level. Recruiters check the south out.

The 2-AAAAAA All Region Basketball Team was provided in the local county newspaper here in Clayton County. The selections were pretty accurate but I was disappointed that a player who was suspended for five games due to conduct detrimental to the team and even dropping the following comment “F Bomb the team, I got mine” during the half time intermission in the lockerroom. I just believe that an individual with this type of attitude should not be rewarded with such an honor. There were more deserving players who displayed athletic talent and honorable character on and off the basketball court. This young man’s coach should have had the intestinal fortitude to inform the other coaches of this terrible and unacceptable behavior and reward some other deserving young man with a spot on the team.

Earl Bryant from Miller Grove was the best all around player and contributor to that team. Please give him his recognition! Like somebody said before, it’s not about offers. They have some overrated guards that get all the props on that team. There would have been NO championship without Earl!

I say check the numbers, because numbers don’t LIE, nor do they get “SPECIAL ATTENTION”!!! I help with a local gym that’s open on Sundays and see kids from most of Dekalb County Schools. Most of them are good, but some are great and the numbers they put up match my thoughts…. Bakari Copleland of Arabia Mountain and Earl Bryant of Miller Grove are hands down two of Georgia’s best, they can play and compete with any names on anyone’s list!!!

I have to say that for what this kid went through last season, almost losing his life, to come back and end his season with a state championship (first one ever for boys in Henry County) my vote goes to Eric Wortham Jr. from Eagles Landing High School.
It had to be tough on him to watch his fellow Golden Eaglse lose to Columbia last season, but he had a great season on a great team and closed his career out with the AAAA trophy.

I do agree there are some really good players in the state who don’t even get the support from their own coaches. I am not sure how to improve their chances of being selected. I really like Shayla Cooper’s attitude & her hustle, Diamond is a great player & Asia Durr should get more recognition. There’s also some players from less prominent teams who should be recognized as well.

I’d like to see Norcross and Eagles Landing play for the ‘real’ state championship. Saw all the champs in person and most of them a few times. Goodwin led Norcross but depth and great team defense won it. Eagles had the best overall talent in the state, bar none. All are D1 talent even the 6′ small forward, Dennis.
How about a game with top 2 teams each year. This year it’s an easy choice.

Tosin Mehinti of Greenforest Christian is garbage. Seriously, he sucks. Greenforest was blessed Kaiser Gates of Saint Francis had a off shooting night. The best shooter in GA regardless of class. Shoots like KD, Step Curry. Kobi Simmons, his teammate, best frosh in the state. The best 1, 2 combo in the state, maybe the country. Durant and Westbrook of high school basketball!

Much success to the Benjamin E Mays high school basketball team, you guys had a tremendous season. While watching other teams play in the tournaments, I noticed a few guys who played excellent offense and defense and I just want to say continue to play harder next year and for those of you who will be heading to college, give your best and nothing less. Coach Steve Smith of Oak Hill Acad. stated “Quarterman was the best player that he has seen in his gym over the past 3 yrs. Quarterman was so good, we had to double team him.”

Dear South Ga Sport Reporter, please ck your source before highlighting a player. Paker, left true competition to play with the little girls. When faced with higher levels of competition she gets Shut Down. A struggling Jenkins High School Beat them twice and in the big championship game she didn’t produce. They only scored 27 points and most was scub points at the end of the game. Please!, there are more talented girls in the area who are better than your pick. Do your homework and choose the best player, don’t choose with your feelings!

@ Eagle 1 – Tahj accomplishments are good but not impressive. Let’s not talk from a personal fan perspective. Let’s simply talk basketball. The 3 state titles are good, the 3POY if it’s actually factual is good, but they must be 3 GA POY awards. However the MAIN POINT is this, we are talking (2012-2013 season), all of the other years have (PAST and GONE). Janet Jackson said it best (WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR ME LATELY). The 19-1 state playoff record well that can also be accredited to all the (recruits) that Eagle Landing’s have gained. I’m not being funny but (EL) recruit’s very well. But when you have a kid that can take his little area school to a win state, and in the same respect accomplish all of these things on a state and national level in his perspective year (2012-2013). Now you are talking Mr. Basketball for the State of Georgia. Remember the award is for (2012-2013) all other dates and accomplishments have past and gone. Now again I state, no dis-respect to Tahj Shamsid, he sounds like a good kid that has plenty of game, and my sincere congrat’s to (EL) on their state title. My vote is for Mr. Quarterman/Johnson of Sav. or Mr. Greene/Tift Co. But when it comes to representing Georgia, I wish for much success and want all of our GA kids to represent us well on the next level. GA. /B-BALL #1.

You said Tajh resume was good but not impressive, name one player whose resume is better.

Seriously COBB? Whatdoyouexpect? You sound like sour grapes (from England). The young man in the semi-finals from Aquinas was clearly the best player on the court against St. Francis. There are several reasons kids pick colleges (relationships, degree choice, location, etc.). UAB’s program is better than you might think.

@Truth, the best female player from Georgia is a young lady by the name of Mya Moore.
@GHSA Fan, I wish I seen Quarterman play this season, herd nothing but great things about him. I also can say its good to see the Savannah get a championship, but my vote goes to Taj from Columbia.
He single handedly carried Columbia this season and led them to the Finals. He finished with a 19-1 record in the post-season and did it against one of the toughest schedules in the state.
The Auburn signee has the numbers and all intagibles to win Mr. Georgia.
While you say Mr. Georgia is about the regular season, its also a “popularity” contest also. Taj has been a household name across the Southeast since he was a freshman, while Quarterman has emerged into the spotlight recently.
Advantage Taj.
For Freshman of the Year, I’ll go with Alterique Gilbert of MG. This kid played big on the brightest stages.
How long will it take for MG to get a story on its (5) state championships in basketball?

I have been in the gyms and out in the fields. The best female highschool player in Georgia is Diamond DeShields. I am a basketball analysis you know what I mean? The best male basketball player in Georgia is Tahj Shamsid-Deen.

KENNYA SIMMS (2016) PG from LANGSTON HUGHES…. The best ball handler and distributer this side of the Mason Dixon. She almost single handedly took a 7 win at best team to 25 – 3 and an appearance in the state 6A Final 4. You judge these things off of team worth and the value of a person to their team as well as the accomplishments of that team. WELL here you go!!!
