AAAAAA boys: Norcross 59, North Cobb 54

Norcross’ Brandon Goodwin scored 22 points, and North Cobb’s Lee Moore missed one of two free late free throws, as Norcross won a 59-54 thriller over North Cobb in the Class AAAAAA semifinals.

Goodwin led Norcross, hitting 8 of 10 crucial free throws down the stretch – including the front end of three one-and-ones – but it was Moore who threatened to steal the show.

In a stretch spanning the third and fourth quarters, Moore scored 15 consecutive North Cobb points and 17 of 20, bringing the Warriors back from as many as 11 down to a 44-42 deficit in the closing minutes.

The senior scored 21 of his team-high 23 in the second half, but it was the final two free throws he may remember.

Down 55-53, Moore stepped to the free throw line with a chance to tie the game with 12.7 seconds left, pumping his fist and smiling as he got set to take the ball.

He calmly made the first, but the second rattled out, and Norcross got the rebound. A Jon Beausejoir potential game-tying 3-pointer on the next possession was blocked, and Goodwin scored his final 2 points on a rebounded subsequent free throw.

Holding just a 2-point lead at halftime, the Blue Devils held North Cobb scoreless for more than half of the third quarter, pushing their lead into double digits for the first time.

It was a lead they never relinquished, though the Warriors did cut it down to 2 at one point in the fourth quarter.

Norcross’ size was too much for the Warriors, particularly on offense, where North Cobb struggled getting the ball inside for most of the game with 6-foot-7 Terrance O’Donohue and 6-6 Lorenzo Carter manning the paint.

During the third quarter, the only thing keeping the Warriors in the game was outside shooting, as all 9 of their points came on 3-pointers – two from Lee Moore and one from Moore.

I think last year’s teams were much stronger especially Savannah and Milton. Tift’s loss in Elite 8 is just inexplicable at Tift with 5-star talent at the guard positions.

It was almost perfect the way things played out. Wheeler lost (The worst of all in regards to recruiting)……Avery Patterson-who by the way was enrolled at Milton as late as October of this year. Tift Co lost…….B. Greene’s mom gets job at Tift Co. Westlake lost ….K.Johnson is 20 years old. Shiloh lost…..their whole team. But Norcross won tonight. Oh well. At least Norcross doesn’t call others team’s players………Speaking of calling other people’s players…..How did Buford do? Oh they lost. For someone who thinks and speaks as if he sits among Dean Smith and John Wooden, he doesn’t have much to show……Well, recruiting season starts next week for Allen. He has to replace all five seniors. Rest assured he will and the GHSA will sit back and look the other way. Thanks Ralph.

Kids wanna play for winning teams. especially those who have big time scouts after them. High school athletics is a beautiful thing. Best scouts looking at the best schools for the best players. Its an interview!!

@ Steve Daniels LOL Live your little moment buddy, because transfer-rich Norcross will BURY Hillgrove next week.

Then, designer teams will once again dominate AAAAAA next year. I know for a fact that some very significant out-of-state talent will be arriving in the summer to bolster a couple of the elite programs. Then two very tall, very talented instate siblings will be doing the same.

Those will be just a small part of the talent migration for ‘13-14 to the programs that you obviously despise. LOL again.

Ricky King, I actually think Tift may be better as a team without Green as a focal point. Often when you have a star player, the others end up standing around and watching them. Tadric is a monster and I am sure you guys will be back.

Norcross will maul Hillgrove. Too talented, too deep, to big, too tough and considerably more talented.
N’s Andre Chatfield is as good offensively as HG’s only go-to guy and N has so many weapons that they don’t even have to rely on Chatfield for point production. Carter and O’Donohue will ravage HG’s undersized front.
And, shame on Douglas Lipscomb and his coaching staff for robbing us of another Norcross/Wheeler showdown with your epic coaching failure. Did you guys stop at a bar for a few too many on the way over to the arena?

Cuzzin’ Josh…we are not getting into a smack talking contest. games are not won by selling wolf tickets. I kept hearing about the depth of Norcross and finally had a chance to see them last night. Very good team led by #11 and #15. In fact #11 is probably one of the more talented guards in the state. I hope his grades are up to par because his game deserves to go up to the next level. But after that no one really jumped out at me with a WOW factor. the game is at 8:45 pm next week in Macon. let’s talk at about 11 pm on the 9th and may the best TEAM win.

The 2 best AAAAAA boys teams are North Cobb and Norcross. North Cobb already beat Hillgrove 3 out of 3. The NC_Norcross could have went either way. Shame the kid missed the late fre throw. I believe he had hit 17 in a row before that. #11 for Norcross was the difference in the game. Great talent.

Love those “NC Warriors” Those kids won off of sheer will. Terry Gorsuch has to be one of the top 5 worst coaches in the state. Most of his players don’t even listen to him. They just know they have to run those antiquated sets to stay on the floor. He is a control freak that attempts to micro-manage their every move. He lacks the ability to communicate with players and would have gotten even more from them if he had the ability to do so. And his inability to make game situation adjustments (as evident in last night game), and those along side him are useless, terrible coaching staff! Great coaches adjust to their talent implementing offenses that exploit their abilities. Not some XO’s that you have been running for the past 13yrs. This 2013 class was by far the most talented group he has ever had. And pitifully he could’nt get out of their way.

Great job Hillgrove! Nobody has given us a chance in any of our games and we are fine with that. I think Norcross is a very talented team but just like @only a matter of time said, the game is played Saturday night in Macon. According to these blogs Wheeler was supposed to mop the floor with Hillgrove. If you didn’t see the game that is exactly what DID NOT happen. If we lose to Norcross on Sturday then I will be content as they were the best team. This is the first time we have made it to the Championship game and the school has only been around since 2006. Either way it should be a great game this weekend. Let’s Go Hawks!!

@The Grove Wheeler should have mopped the floor with you. If anyone knows Hillgrove’s shortcomings, it is us, who were 3-0 against you. The fact that Wheeler played such a horrible game is on them.

Norcross will win on Saturday big. The do at least three or four things that you’ll have no answer for.

N Cobb vs Norcross was the state championship game! NORCROSS WON! THEY ARE THE CHAMPION, Season over! The bracket having TIFT, WESTLAKE, MORROW, N COBB, NORCROSS. On same side SCREAMS FOR A NEW WAY TO SET UP BRACKET! I wish HILLGROVE a miracle, but it won’t happen, NORCROSS IS A BEAST! WHEELER & NORCROSS are the best places to move to if winning is most important to u! They both are a great draw for future high D1 prospects as well as future pros! It’s just the way it is! & I will let u know it will be NORCROSS vs WHEELER in the ship next year as well! UNLESS THEY GET PUT ON SAME SIDE OF BRACKET, in that case u will have another championship that will be played in an earlier round , just like the N COBB vs NORCOSS CHAMPIONSHIP GAME PLAYED IN THE FINAL 4!

All you guys are a joke and sore losers!!!!!!!! North Cobb fans please don’t degrade your team and coaches great season by all this crap talk that Hillgrove is not deserving to be in the Championship game. I was at 2 of 3 of the Hillgrove – NC games and in both of them Hillgrove had a double digit lead but to NC credit they refused to lose.

No doubt Norcross is favored but come the 4th quarter if it is close Watch OUT. Win, Lose or Draw I will be in Macon to celebrate and congratulate the players and coaches for a well played season.

Oh and remember Hillgrove have some very talented Juniors and best of all we don’t have to worry that they might transfer.

I was just saying they CAN’T BEAT NORCROSS, if I’m wrong feel free to thrash me & rub it in ,& if u would like to bet on the game I will bet u 1000$ to your 100$ which means if u win u get 1000$ & if u lose u only pay 100$!!

All I am saying is I remember Milton was supposed to blow out Savannah last year. Also a few years ago Milton was a huge favorite against Norcross and lost. THAT’S WHY THE GAME IS PLAYED. Also keep your money I’m not so invested or self-centered in this thing that I have to try to prove my knowledge by betting on a High School game. BBALLER, Man you on point I watched several of the North Cobb games and I could not understand how a team with so much talent could not win the championship, last nights semifinal game displayed that you can have all the talent in the world and have a coach that really doesnt understand the talent on his team. Against Tift County he got out of the way and allowed the team to play the helter skelter style of baskeball in the second half that prove to be the deciding factor. Last night I believe the game was lost in the first quarter, despite a heros charge by Lee Moore and his teammates.
Like some players can not handle the pressure of the big stage the North Cobb coaching staff proved that they truly were not ready to handle the moment. back to the 1st quarter North Cobb came out with a fire and ripped a 5-0 start and was very aggressive on defense then their coach yelled for them to slow the tempo and run some play called “CHIN” that’s when Norcross hit them with an 8-0 run and realized they could play with these guys. Sitting in the stands initially I was excited the point guards for both team were going at it, Jordan sent a message, Austin was aggresive, JB was ripping rebounds and Lee was just Lee, ready to explode! Its sad when a COACH takes away his own teams momentum!!! Best LUCK to all the SENIORS!! Great Job!!

Manny Fresh, Tadric is not 18 and you need to read and understand GHSA rules that state any kid can play as long as he does not turn 19 before May 1st of that school year. May 1st, the basketball season is long over and tadric will be a senior next year. So sorry to disappoint you, he will be playing. The rule if you want to read it is under the age section of the GHSA by laws and the section is 1.30. Speaking from facts not rumor.

@Ahabeel thank you for the humor this morning! One reason that NC is not in the championship game is that the were not as effective inside as they needed to be. Their best big took too many threes overall and should have found a way to get to the cup like the superstar guard did in the fourth quarter. Another reason they lost was because of emotion. When you go to the free throw line, you have to block everything out, including your emotions. To smile and clap and look up at the scoreboard is not a good sign in general and usually the results are not good. So please don’t hate the coach. He only puts it out there. The players have to perform!

Mike, appreciate the love. No harm bro. It’s tough on parents because you invest a great deal emotionally. Never took offense to your words, because you were still in the 24 hour window of “hurt and pain.” For better or worse basketball and high school sports in general have become big business and coaches, players and parents are under a great deal of pressure to win. I think we all respect you guys getting on a bus and going to a hostile Tift County and getting the win. You did all that and your reward was playing Norcross in the semi’s. We get it and like I said all year, IF, N. Cobb can get and stay healthy, there aren’t too many in the state that can stay on the floor with you guys. The Hawk nation will be headed south and hopefully we do good job of reppin for Region 4.

Can we all please admit that in basketball… The “big boy” classifications mean nothing anymore. North cobb and Norcross are presumed to be the top 2 teams in the highest classification. Class A North Cobb Christian beat 6A North Cobb by 20. Class A Greenforest lost to Norcross by only 4. Class A Athens Christian played with 5 sophmores and beat two 6A schools, beat North Cobb Christian and barely loss to Greenforest in the final 4. Baaketball should have one state champ like Kentucky and Indiana. Let football do their own thing.

@WiltChamberlain: Actually thats exactly what it is and it happens more than you think. There is a new bylaw in the GHSA rule book that was made specifically for how teams like Norcross and Wheeler get around the whole “undue influence” thing. The bylaw states that if a player is training with a parent/coach at a school and ends up transfering to that school, then he must sit out for one year. Even if the parent/coach they are training with, is not offiliated with that school in any way…. Basically what was happening is AAU coaches were working with kids in the off-season at the high schools and then getting them to transfer there. That way the actual coaches of the high schools can say “i didnt know anything about it” and just play dumb.
