When Jerron Love’s jumper didn’t fall, the celebration for Hillgrove began.
Kyle Castlin scored 20 points to help the Hawks barely held off No. 7 Wheeler when Love’s shot at the buzzer hit the front of the rim, giving No. 5 Hillgrove a 56-54 win in the Class AAAAAA semifinals.
This will be Hillgrove’s first trip to the state finals. Wheeler failed in its bid for a sixth state title under coach Doug Lipscomb.
The Hawks (27-4) never trailed after a 15-2 run spanning the third and fourth quarters gave them a 47-39 lead, but it was certainly close, particularly when Wheeler scored 7 straight to make it 49-48 with 3:23 left.
But Hillgrove had just enough gas in the tank, hitting 5 of 8 free throws, including 1 of 2 from Keith Ray with 6.1 seconds left that set up Love’s final attempt.
On that play, the key for Hillgrove was to protect from a loss at all costs. No threes. No easy baskets.
“Just don’t give up a three,” Hillgrove coach Ed Morris said. “If they go and they score two, worst-case scenario is we go into overtime. Don’t let him make a three to win it. We were fortunate that he stepped up and took a two.”
The long jumper was on line but just short, and there wasn’t enough time for a second attempt for Wheeler (21-9).
Prior to that, Love had another chance to tie the game, standing at the line with 9.3 seconds remaining after being fouled going for a layup.
He missed the first and made the second, and the Wildcats were forced to foul.
The Hawks likely never would have been in that position if not for Castlin, who made three 3-pointers and scored 12 of his game-high 20 points in the second half.
A junior small forward, Castlin has emerged as a leader on a team that has only lost four games.
“What I love about him is, he doesn’t force the game; he doesn’t force shots,” Morris said, of Castlin. “He just lets the game come to him.”
His biggest stretch was during the key 15-2 run, when he scored 7 straight Hillgrove points to close the third quarter, sending the game into the fourth quarter tied 39-39.
Elijah Staley had a team-high 13 points for Wheeler. Jordan Sexton came off the bench to add 17 points for the Hawks.

Wheeler didn’t get “upset” in this game. Hillgrove had a better record and was ranked higher. Of course, Wheeler might have the better talent, but it’s young and not fully developed yet. But you cant consider it an upset when the team who got “upset” lost to Cherokee. Don’t get me wrong, Wheeler WILL be a monster next year AND the year after, especially if Giddens can learn a few offensive moves. But Hillgrove was the better team TODAY.

It was an upset. Not anything against what you say. I’ve read the blogs where Hillgrove did not play anyone, or how Wheeler played a stronger schedule and national teams. so if anyone claims it was an upset, let your own fans know what you say above. It was there bragging that made this an upset.

@ Uuummmmmm,
It is only an upset when a team that was a decided underdog wins. Hillgrove was higher ranked but less appreciated because they do not have the state championships that Wheeler has. What you are describing is making someone eat crow–but not an upset. Good luck in the finals.

@ Don: I understand what you mean. Just relating to all the post on the blogs over the last few weeks. I read where fans said they are at full tilt after football season and should power over all. I read how they didn’t understand why they were ranked so low after the grueling (and national) schedule they have. I read how the fans said that Hillgrove has not played anyone (including losing 3 times to N. Cobb), and though their record was better they should not be ranked as high as they are. I read, I read and read. So yes the better record and higher rank won. So I guess it was just an upset to all those Wheeler fans that were loud over the last few weeks on the blog. Don’t get me wrong, Wheeler has the better athletes, but are still young and raw, and I believe they will make some noise next year if the team stays put. But tonight the more mature team won, and I’ll just have a little fun.

Hillgrove is the better team! Now if it was a Dunking contest or a junk talking contest or how fancy can i check into the game contest then wheeler would have won. Hillgrove should have one that game by 6 or 7. and castlin was the best player on the court on both teams!GGOD

To the fan of the game, Giddens has offensive moves, but the Wheeler guards will not pass him the ball. One man is not going to beat any team. Hillgrove’s guard play was better. Each time Giddens got the ball on the inside, he was unstoppable. All in all, a great game.

The better Coached TEAM won the game tonite. Wheeler played a terrible game. They didnt play team ball. Thats the same way Roswell, Walton & Cherokee beat us. Hillgrove must have shot 75% from the 3 point line. I think they hit about 9 3’s. Wheeler hit all of 3. That was the difference. Kyle Castlin WAS not the best

I really enjoyed the game. I thought Hillgrove did control the tempo of the game and was solid on both offense and defense. We handled the pressure of the press well. I think the refs allowed a whole lot of physical play. In the end it was a very exciting and entertaining game.

@dsportsfan.. Kyle Castlin was the best player on the floor because his TEAMMATES allows him to be. They know who there best player is. On the other hand, Wheeler’s team wont let there best player lead. To many heroes. You seen it with your own eyes. I dont have to tell you who the best player on the court was. You Already know.. Hillgrove played a GREAT team game. The coaching was EXCELLENT. You can tell he did his homework. They beat us just like Roswell & Walton did. shooting 3’s. Our gaurds wasnt smart enough to stop shooting and go to the bigs. If they dont involve Staley & Giddons, THEY WONT WIN… Maybe the will realize that next year.. Good job Hillgrove.. JOB WELL DONE!!

Well I thought I would jump into the conversation after reading some of the hilarious (moronic and stupid) comments. 1) Basketball is a TEAM sport…Hillgrove had the better TEAM…period. 2) In high school basketball…coaching and preparing your team is critical…Hillgrove coach did a great job getting his team prepared and kept them focused throughout the game…while the Wheeler coach thought his team would have a walk in the park against Hillgrove…preparation, preparation, preparation. 3) the Hillgrove boys played the game while the Wheeler boys talked trashed…it is unfortunate that the Wheeler players had to repeatedly also be told to put their shirts in their shorts…just a sign that they don’t respect the game…after all this is high school basketball and not street ball…I guess the coach has not taught them that yet 4) the only reason this game ended as close as it did…poor officiating. These refs tonight missed a couple goal tending calls (blocked shots off the glass) and terrible if not some of the worst calls I have witnessed this year in high school basketball. One ref in the game called only one foul against Wheeler the entire night and an uncountable amount against Hillgrove…he turned a blind eye and was clearly out to make it even harder on Hillgrove…go back and watch the game and you will see…rumor has it he had a Wheeler jersey on under his stripes tonight.
All in all it was a very exciting game with the better coached team and better execution coming out victorious. God luck to Hillgrove as they now face Norcross in the finals….it should be a good one to watch.

Norcross will decimate Hillgrove.
On the whole, Hillgrove is a small, hard working and overachieving team with one talented guy (small) and a second sort-of-talented guy(small).
That formula won’t cut it against Norcross whose #6-#9 players are better than Hillgrove’s #3-#5 players.

Wheeler needs guards who can utilize their bigs. 3 pts shots were off for Wheeler, and you must make your free throws. Hillgrove won the game (with bad GHSA officials). They were vere patience on offense, played solid team defense, and all 5 players rush to the offensive boards.
Wheeler needs guards–if they don’t get solid guard play next year, the same results will occur.
Guards that push the ball, rotate on defense, play team basketball, and just have “guts”.
No one on Hillgrove couldn’t stop Giddens on the inside. Well, hopefully the Wheeler coaching staff will realize and grow from this game.
Congratulations to Hillgrove.

@Walter Paul I totally agree with you. Norcross in a beat-down of epic proportions.
N’s Andre Chatfield is as good offensively as HG’s only go-to guy and N has so many weapons that they don’t even have to rely on Chatfield for point production. Carter and O’Donohue will ravage HG’s undersized front.
And, Doug Lipscomb, shame on you and your staff for robbing us of another Norcross/Wheeler showdown with an inanely massive coaching failure. Did you guys stop at a bar for a few on the way over to the arena?

Black Wheeler Parent and Dr. Jack…just stop crying. You throw out these left handed compliments for Hillgrove and then you blame your coach, guards, concession stand workers, janitorial staff, security guards and place blame every where but the “bigs” on your team. You are either #4s parent and if that’s the case you need to work on the mental aspect of the game. He let Hillgrove 6th man get in his head and after that he lost focus. Instead of team concept he just wanted to show everyone how big and bad he was by dunking. Dude should be working on FTs and getting that percentage up. If you’re #14s parent how about working on his hands and footwork down inside. How many times did the guards go down low to the bigs but only to have the bigs get stripped because they aren’t strong. A little more time in the weight room this off season for these “bigs” you’re so fond of. Being tall and getting sholarship offers doesn’t make you the “best” on the court. Playing smart, out working your opponent and keeping your composure in crunch time will have you cutting down the nets in Macon.

@smitty you are right about a few things but lets get something strait homie.. dont try to act like our boys dont respect the game because they had to be told to tuck there shirts in. Explain to me why the Hillgrove kid tackled Giddons and then he told our coach that his COACH instructed him to do that. What kind of bs is that to tell a kid. My son knows several kids on the team and they talked last night and told my son that HILLGROVES COACH instructed his players to push and shove and be goons on the court. And you say Wheeler players dont have respect for the Game???? I dont know what game you was watching homie. Hillgrove won the gamesimply because they hit about 9 or 10 3’s & we hit only 3 and missed about 10. Our coaches made a lot of bad choices also. Hillgroves team is no better than ROSWELL AND WALTON… you guys had a good run. If we played yall 10 times we would win 8.. lol Goid luck against Norcross.. you guys will need it. I was at the game last night. The Wheeler players are really talented. Seems like some Wheeler supporters (parents) want to blame the Wheeler guards and coach for not getting the ball down low to the star players. Maybe they couldn’t….Hillgrove was relentless on defense. For much of the game Hillgrove was very patient on offense. The better TEAM did win, but every kid who played in that game should be proud of their efforts, both sides. Hillgrove is not just one player…ask Brunswick about BJ Brown, or Tri Cities about Keith Ray. I hope Hillgrove can do the same against Norcross. IT IS A TEAM SPORT!

black wheeler parent…you come on here dogging the guard play on your son’s team and you get upset when someone gives you some unbiased constructive criticism of your boy’s game??? Your kid is nice. Football and basketball he has been blessed with the stuff you can’t coach and that’s size. Now if his daddy would show him how to work on his game and teach him to out work his opponents night in and night out he might be on to something. if his daddy would only learn about not blaming everyone in the building following a tough loss then your kid will learn some life lessons that will serve him well beyond the court or football field. look your kid has to learn that he’s not going to win every game he plays. some nights are going to go better than others. sometimes in life you will lose at something that maybe you are not supposed to. the coach is not going to make all the right moves, his teammates are going to have off nights, it’s part of the game.

Clearly the best TEAM won last night. That should tell you which COACH was the best. All of Cobb knows that Lipscomb wins because of the endless transfers. So this begs the question is he a great basketball coach or just a great recruiter to his program. This roster is no different. #14 is a nomad. When mommy and daddy are dis-satisfied they just find another place for play(read black Wheeler parent’s comments). #14 has lived in the Harrison, Kennesaw Mountian, North Cobb, and Wheeler school district in the last six years. The Hillgrove players have been in the program for five, six and seven years. Their coach has built a program through hard work and loyalty. In an era where coaches win championships(wheeler, milton, and norcross) with all-star transfers it is no small feat what Hillgrove accomplished last night. I do not know if Hillgrove will beat Norcross. I do know that it is refreshing to see a great TEAM work together and compete against the aforementioned all-star teams that have been allowed to dominate the last 8-10 years of Georgia’s highest classification.
Congratulations Coach Ed Morris and the entire Hillgrove TEAM

Wheeler has had problems with the PG play all year. The SMOAK kid in particular. You guys can say what you want. You have to know the ins and outs to blog with the truth. @black wheeler parent is just calling it like it is.They didnt use their main weapons and the coach didnt make them. jerron .. basketball is a TEAM SPORT not 1 on . Dude. All teams have problems and parent gripes. At Hillgrove they say Kyle is a ball hog.. Samething at Nort Cobb with Steele. I can go on but I wont. bottom line. a lot of you are just pissed and jealous that your kid dont play or START!! I know all about the Wheeler Pg feud.. lol

Reading all the recent updates…sounds to me like someone is a little angry…possibly his son should take up an individual sport so that he will not be able to blame others for the team loss…I don’t know which kid is your…it really doesn’t matter…possibly instead of looking for a reason why Wheeler lost…praise the boys for their hard work and teach them a life lesson.

@longtimecobbbasketballer dude you are getting a little personal. Let me inform you.. ALL Schools recruit. Churchwell recruited Jamal from Pope. He lived in a inlaws suit directly in front of the school. One of North Cobb Coaches that use to coach the 9th grade team was recruiting Staley. Hillgroves Coach recruits. So does Kenn Mt., Mceachern, etc. dont start me my friend. I KNOW EVERYBODY AND ALL THE DIRT. WATCH WHAT YOU SAY. The school that was recruiting STALEY (MILTON).. He didnt go there. He chose Wheeler. They didnt choose him

All you guys need to chill, Hillgrove beat Wheeler, plan and simple, they played the better game, Morris outcoached Lipscomb, plan and simple, they played patiently on offense, and hit their open jumpers, and played tenacious on defense, Wheeler only plays one style, up and down the floor, and if they can’t do that, they don’t have a plan B, and that was the problem with Wheeler, Hillgrove took away plan A, and that was it for Wheeler. Some of you guys seem to think that Hillgrove doesn’t have any talent, they wouldn’t be here without talent, Norcross is good, but they have flaws just like anyone else, #11 is good, be he only finishes on the right side of the court, #22 can jump out of the gym and is very strong(#2 ranked DE in country), but can’t make FT’s, #15 is very versatile, he worries me more than anyone. And to forealtho, Hillgrove don’t recruit, Morris have turned away kids that came over from other schools just to play basketball, these kids played in the Hillgrove Jr program. Also forealtho, you are just throwing out there about Kyle shooting to much, that is the FARTHEST thing from the truth, the kids actually want him to shoot more, he is not a volume shooter, he gets his points within the flow of the game, so please don’t put that out there just to be saying something, that is not true. Good luck Hillgrove next Saturday, nobody thought they would beat Wheeler, you never know, that’s why they play the game, we will see next week in Macon.

FOR ALL WHEELER PARENTS that have commented on this blog in a NEGATIVE WAY, SHAME on you!!! these are kids, nobody’s kid is getting a paycheck and they are all AMATUERS….First and foremost, it’s a TEAM SPORT, stop thinking that one is better than the other. They aren’t…they all make mistakes in EVERY GAME…if you want to blame someone, blame the COACHING STAFF, all of them…they are suppose to prepare the kids for battle and they were simply not prepared in a lot of ways… the BIGS as well as Guard play was equally off based because everyone was playing one on one bal instead of TEAM ball….face it, the BIGS didn’t convert MANNNYYY times when the ball was given to them and the GUARDS played selfishly at times..they were just trying to WIN and they didnt play their best game as a TEAM…..stop blaming one set of kids becasue frankly you don’t COMPLAIN when they win and they make some of the same mistakes then, it just ends up in their favor…ALL of the kids including Hillgrove played hard and I congratulate them all, even the kids that didn’t play, they were still cheering their teams on sitting on the bench… I encourage you PARENTS to be a GOOD example for your kids, and by posting negative things about kids is simply DISTASTEFUL!!!!

This is hilarious!!! The people at Wheeler named the gym after a guy who gets outcoached on almost nightly basis. Hes turned into a puppet for the inmates that run WorldWide. People want to use youth as an excuse for Wheeler. Please…their are plenty of coaches who would LOVE to have that youth and would have at least made a state championship appearance. After Boyd was canned at Milton and that program was benched for the postseason, their was no doubt about it that Norcross, Tift County, and Wheeler were far and away the 3 most talented teams. Only 1 of those teams made it and they are probably about to win their 5th championship in the last 8 years. The pathetic Worldwide coaches (I use the term ‘coaches’ loosely)sit on the floor at Wheeler home games and coach from the sidelines. They go into the locker room during pre game, halftime, and post game. Ever since Wheeler has been bringing in busloads of players they have never reached their potential as a team. At times they have been good enough that even Stevie Wonder couldnt mess it up. Which semifinal loss will go down in Wheeler history as the worst one ever…Hillgrove or Beach?

Worldwide and Wheeler coaches told Kejuan Johnson who transferred to Westlake one week before season he is prohibited from a team tryout. ( that’s the drift) Maybe bc johnson had played for Aau team other than worldwide. Could be a rumor but up to you to decide. GA high school hoops authority is totally lame. Is this claim fact or opinion? If true then is there any conflict of interest issue? The problem is Worldwide has a son on team as well so he is perfect position to hold back the other players for his kid. The recruiter, is the coach and father of son on team. 3 in 1. No wonder Wheeler lost. And lipscom going along with it is amazing. Worldwide stay out the gym n locker rooms and be one or the other. Not all 3. If you try to be all 3 stubbornly j promise Wheeler will fall by September. Still you have one coming to you. God bless America.

To the parents from both teams, you have very talented players on both the winning and the losing teams, which is why you made it to the Semifinals. What some of you are doing in this blog is displaying your individual low self esteem and trying hard for it to be lifted by diminishing the other opponent. Some comments fall squarely in the realm of bullying, especially the comments by the person “Where greater then you.” Your suggestion of violence to the point of ending a life is highlighting the violent culture that has permeated our society and it absolutely needs to stop. No words spoken should ever conclude with such an ending. If this is the type attitude you are building in the minds of your athletes on the floor, I only hope and pray they have the insight and wisdom not to be like you.

Pay attention Building a TEAM 101….Wheeler has great individual players just not a great team…You cant have so many superstars on one team , role players are the key. Example…Staley and Brown pretty much the same type of player….Smoak and Patterson pretty much the same player…I’ve heard some comments about Jerron Love…but he is actually the only pure point guard on the team. Example…Norcross first five consists of a solid point guard (Goodwin) a shooter(Chatfield) low post scorer (O’Donahue) a perimeter defender (Pinkett) and interior defender/rebounder(Carter)….Could McMillan have compiled a team of all D1 prospects ? Probably….But the object is to build a championship TEAM not an all star team

This system for whatever purpose is backwards. Impossible to realistically win chip with such an unorthodox formula or view and perspective of line ups. your pure point guard playing back up secondary role to a combo guard. Lmao. Wheeler needs to just quit.

Jerron is trained to play within system OR play his own game. Neither is horrible. if Jerron uses his own game against you he will destroy u. Don’t judge him In that system and coming off bench. When your son starts n have to pass him the ball to score. Just isn’t fair. If it were a NBA combine and u said he’s horrible then that’s ok becaused based off his true ability. But not when he’s still learning the system and back up as they paint it. Jerron is far advanced skill wise then him so if he’s horrible like u say then wheeler is starless. Elijah is athletic n Jerron is skilled. Both shall collide as a way of life.

Tha Truth…sound like you know something about to go down.
I will say this as a person outside “Wheeler-ville”, the booster club meetings must be real tense over there. You all are out of control. You’ve formed, recruited and assembled a young team with young talent. Last I checked no one is getting paid out there. Unless someone is going to come clean about that too on here. You guys are beating up 16 and 17 year olds. You need to quit living through your kids and accept the fact your playing days are history. If some of you even played. It must be miserable for the coaches and players because adults can’t get along for 30 games and play nice. No one has heard a peep out of Wheeler all season and then they lose a game to a TEAM you feel superior to and then it’s the coaches fault, the guards fault, the concession stand workers fault, the lighting at Tech was not right, the refs fault. There is too much of an entitlement feeling going on over there. Respect is earned. Obviously no one is intimidated by Wheeler. It’s the playoffs and you are amongst the hunted. No where is it written that just because you show up with a couple of tall kids you HAVE to win. If one of next year recruits reads this blog, do you think they are in a hurry to come play with that group of parents?? It’s beyond me that someone would want their kid to play over there. Obviously you don’t like your coach. He has how many titles? Obviously you don’t like anyone in the back court and what’s crazy you guys publically disrespect team mates on a blog.

Wheeler is one of the 5 who won’t start him. Just play the kids in rightful position not about beating up 16 and 17. Cut the crap. The campaign is to make guards seem horrible to create the stage of holding Jerron Love back another year. Wheeler must have beef with Espn mag or something cause they damn sure wanted to see hi

Just a few tidbits, the Staley kid should of been playing for NC Saturday night, he was at NC up until the 8th grade when the dad realized he wouldnt be the star for the next four years transferred him because the Griffin brothers being the studs they are and he dang sure wouldnt of played QB in front of the Queen kid.
Many, many Tommy Toughguys on here, “hey yo, meet me down the skreet and lets go a round and thro some hands homie”. Grow up folks, let the kids play basketball and leave them alone, and live your hasbeen, wannabe life by yourself. Btw, AAU is a joke.

Not a fan of any team, but Hillgrove played a great game. Wheeler has no consistant shooter, but they did not get the ball inside none that night. Hillgrove defense wasnt packing in the middle like that. No high low action bigs screening for shooters no sealing the defenders or anything. They had a chance to win at the end, but the wrong person took the last shot twice. #10 and #0. Run win you can but you work inside out period.

@Cobb County Coach dude stop acting like you know why Staley left N. Cobb. First of all he never went to NC. He play 8th grade over there only. He left NC for the same reason the Griffins did. We all know why they left. His parents seen that coming in the 8th grade so they left. Albright should have left as well. Big Queen did jim the same way he did Ty Griffin and would have done Staley if they hadnt left.
Ty Gfiffin is going to GT. Stayley has offers in Football and Basketball. You say he dont have talent? And wouldnt have started? What do you coach? I hope not football cause you sound like a dummy or you hatin. Ive had this convo with you before on here. And truth be told, Stayley would have been at Hillgrove bur you got the same football problem over there. the coaches son is the QB.
Cobb coach stop getting on here with no facts buddy. You dont know a thing. Stick to Coaching powder puff.

@Tha Truth Team Staley will be at Wheeler next year. You heard that from the Team Captain’s mouth. Regardless of what you heard. AND you have no idea of how coaches recruit. Please stop spreading rumors.
