AAAAA boys: Miller Grove 72, Northside Columbus 38

After escaping with their lives in the quarterfinals against Tucker, the Miller Grove boys removed all the guesswork early and rolled to a 72-38 win over Northside-Columbus in the Class AAAAA semfinals at Kennesaw State.

The No. 1-ranked Wolverines (29-3) jumpted out to a 10-2 lead after one quarter and survived a little second-quarter lapse to earn a spot in the championship game against Gainesville on Friday at the Macon Coliseum. Miller Grove will be playing for its fifth straight state championship.

“We tell our kids that if they play together and play hard, that good things will happen,” said Miller Grove coach Sharman White. “At Miller Grove we want to play for championships every year”

White credited his team’s defensive effort as being crucial in the win. The offense sputtered early, but the defense was strong throughout — challenging shots, scrambling for balls – and never trailed.

“I’m proud of the way our defense played the whole game,” White said. “We executed our game plan and played at a tempo we like to play and that they wouldn’t like.”

Miller Grove got 20 points and seven rebounds Keith Pickney, 13 points from Kyre Hamer, 13 points and six rebounds from Earl Bryant and 10 points and 10 rebounds from James Walker.

No. 3 Northside-Columbus (25-5) did not have a scorer in double figures. R.J. Sessions had a team-high seven points and seven rebounds.

Miller Grove had a 15-4 lead when Alterique Gilbert knocked down a 3-pointer, but Northside responded with a 9-0 run to get back in the game. The comeback was stifled when double technical fouls were called, which Miller Grove used as a jumping off spot for a 15-1 run.

“We did a good job at controlling the tempo on defense and when you do that it opens things up on offense,” White said.

Northside-Columbus (38): Thomas 6, Sears 6, Beverly 3, Sessions 7, Floyd 6, Westbrook 5, Vincent 3, Baker 2.

Miller Grove (72): Pickney 20, Williams 4, Walker 10, Bryant 13, Hamer 13, Gilbert 7, Richardson 3, Boykins 2.

Halftime: Miller Grove 30-15

Just another example of why basketball needs to have crossover games just as football does. I’m sure Tucker, Mays, Stephenson would have beaten Northside.

Agree with you 100% HubertG, We want and the best teams deserve to be playing in the semi’s, but the GHSA is more concerned with teams outside metro Atlanta being represented even if they don’t deserve it. Good luck Columbia verses Gainesville get that 5th one in a row and make Georgia history.

I’m saying all the good teams they played wasn’t in they class like norcross Columbia, teams like that. If they was in AAAAAA they wouldn’t have flew threw every body like that. But congrats to miller grove. Mays was strait but they wouldn’t have beat any of the elite teams like Columbia Marist south atlanta eagles landing norcross tift county wheeler.

@Manny Fresh

Region-6 AAAAA is the toughest Region in the state in basketball.

You do realize that Miller Grove beat Norcross this season?

You do realize that Miller Grove went 3-1 at one of the top National Tournaments (Max Preps Holiday Tournament) this season? Lost to the Tournament Champion in the second round.

You do realize that MG has defeated all Elite Programs in Georgia within the last three to four years.

The lost to Columbia at home before the holiday break made MG stronger.

Credit all the above success to great coaching and player development.
A team with two seniors, three juniors, and a plethora of freshman and sophomore have maintained the standard of winning after MG lost all of its starters, including three additionall seniors to graduation.

The task is not over, but the team’s success is amazing.

@Manny Fresh actually, Miller Grove didnt really fly past ppl as easily as Effingham Co. did in the playoffs. Effingham Co. didnt have a close game til they played Gainesville.

Im sure you thought you had a chance to win last night when your team was annilated.it almost seems like they didnt deserve to be there! And might I add, we are doing all of this short one our best players-but we don’t make any excuses, ALL WE DO IS WIN! You sound desparate, and bitter- give it up! Who has to bet on HS ball? Seriously? i’m above that, just like the Eagles soar ABOVE THEIR HATERS!Are you trying to re-live your glory days or something?

i feel all y’all but being a former player of miller grove and watching them lose elite seniors each year while rebuilding and rebounding back is amazing! they dont even really have a big man this year as well. as far as competition goes i think every school in ga fell off just a little, but its not always going to be the same! by the way we only losing 2 seniors i believe….. so what yall think going to happen next year and after that lol

O.K. that’s enough talk for one day. CHS is the reason why any of yall have bball programs from the beginning. CHS has been donig this since the 90s. Before Miller Grove was even a school. All yall are combinations of other schools that came before you. Check your history. CHS has always been there, win or lose. Pay your respects to real OGs of this game, and understand that its an honor to even be in this position. Support each other, because noboby has it better than Dekalb County has it right now. Peace Out!!!!!

Coach White of Miller Grove will get his 5th straight championship ring. You might wanna stick a fork in Gainesville they are done. The theme song for Gainesvillee is Turn The Lights out, The Party’s Over.

@DekalbJoe yeah, you gotta point… but if Gainesville wins, I’ll probably be saying the same thing(”they are who we thought they were”) about Miller Grove b/c they showed some weakness against Tucker in the playoffs. All-in-all though, I’ll be happy as long as we dont get did like Northside-Columbus… lol

@Snakedaddy … being that Gainesville is the poultry capital of the World, we’d just like to say, “dont count those chickens before they hatch” lol … and if we win, we’ll be singing, “Another One” by Slice 9 ft Future… lol

itsonlywrite i am gonna do some research and see if that is true about Gainesville. Even still Gainesville who take home the second place trophy. Gainesville is sweet but they will taste defeat. Gainesville will be singing the blues when they finally lose. At the very end, Gainesville will not win. Give them a meal and tell them to chill as Miller Grove breaks their will.

Yes Gainesville is the poultry capital of the world itsonlywrite. So the coach for Gainesville will treat Coach White to a chicken dinner when Miller Grove is declared the winner.
