AAAA girls: Columbia 61, LaGrange 47

Last season LaGrange served as Columbia’s first hurdle on the trek toward winning the Class AAA state title. The Lady Grangers were back in DeKalb County Friday for revenge and found none, bowing out to the Lady Eagles 61-47 in a Class AAAA second-round game.

It was the third time in four years the Lady Grangers were eliminated by Columbia, and the Lady Eagles went on to win the state title after their previous matchups last year and in 2010. Top-ranked Columbia (24-3) advanced to face the River Ridge-Chestatee winner.

After trailing by 20 late in the first half and 14 to start the fourth quarter, LaGrange pulled within 51-43 with just over two minutes left to play. Thirty seconds later Yaktavia Hickson’s drive and layup put Columbia up 55-43 and Miah Spencer’s free throws in the final minute inched the lead to 59-45, when LaGrange coach Jan Jones waved the white flag.

“We came out early and took control, then we started to play a little too cool,” Columbia coach Chantay Frost said. “At times we were a little sloppy with the basketball but for the most part we did what we wanted to do.”

Hickson led Columbia with 21 points, five rebounds and two steals. Spencer, a North Carolina State signee, scored 19 points with four rebounds and two steals.

Columbia used several transition baskets to build a 30-10 advantage with a minute to play before halftime, but 3-point baskets from Brittany Tatum and Andrea Heflin trimmed the lead. Tatum, LaGrange’s all-time leading scorer, scored nine of her 14 points in the final quarter.

Tatum, guard Steara Mitchell (10 points) and center Kabrenna Smith (10 points, seven rebounds, two blocks) had combined for nearly 50 points per game for LaGrange this season. The Lady Grangers finished the season at 22-8.

Columbia (61) – Yaktavia Hickson 21, Miah Spencer 19, Shaundricka Mann 8, Shamiyah Smith 7, Starr Nowell 2, M. Harris 2, N. Williams 2

LaGrange (47) – Brittany Tatum 14, Steara Mitchell 10, Kabrenna Smith 10, Andrea Heflin 5, Breanna Grant 4, Chetehya Tucker 2, Taydra Holt 2

Halftime: Columbia 30, LaGrange 16

Columbia girls are the elite of AAAA, I can imagine they can give Norcross & Parkview a run for it also.

Casual obeserver of game, if LaGrange had figured out Columbis was leaking out or snow birding it might have been a better game , Columbis had what 30 FB points on snow birds, they are not that good in a half court set , i din’t think they could touch Norcross or Parkview, not enough skilled players besides Spencer in half court game.

The PG & SG from LG was pretty good as scouted as Columbia had a plan to shut thus 2 down with heavy pressure making them pass ball up early, kinda amazing LaGrange has made it that far with with limited amount of talent and dept, Columbia has no real stand out players other than spencer but everyone is a least capable of contributing at times which it appears LG lacked , better team truimphed better 2 1/2 player LG squad.
Take away the snowbird onslaught first Q LG played Columbia dead even rest of game , Columbis prepares to slug you in mouth first quarter whne must teams take 1 q just to get a feel for game by then they up 10-15 pts which usually difference in score at end.
Congrats Lady Eagles got to love the intensity of everthing they do , i so kids sweating in warmup like crazy getting prepared for 1 Quarter knock out punch.

Not being funny, but the point guard and shooting guard for (LG) really were over rated. They were good for that region and for that team but lets be real.. .. if they were in Dekalb county they wouldn’t even be worth discusing. Columbia plays a true team game, everyone does what they are suppose to do from what i saw. LG guards were wild and out of control most of the game, which was why they couldnt get the ball to the post player early(who looked like she was tired the whole game). Didn’t see the snowbird onslaught..what I saw was really, really bad shots by the guards that lead to long rebounds that led to layups! What I saw was boxing out and rebounding that lead to out lets that lead to layups.. what I saw was an out of shape post player who never made it past half court most plays. In short LG took themselves out the game early and the coach couldn’t control them enough to fix those wild shots. For the record if im not mistaken Columbia has beaten Norcross and Parkview, not to mention Tucker, Miller Grove, SWD. All of those teams are good teams who will be key factors in the state. Not saying they are the best team in Ga,… just that they play hard and and are well coached…
