No. 1-ranked Tift County boys cleared of recruiting charges by GHSA

The investigation into Tift County’s boys basketball program is over.

The GHSA has found no wrongdoing in allegations of recruiting that sparked the probe in October, the Tifton Gazette reported.

“It feels good to be vindicated,’’ Tift County High athletic director Rusty Smith told the Gazette. “We felt good about the situation, because the Georgia High School Association had approved every one of our players.’’

Tift County was placed on probation and fined a small amount for an illegal practice held in November of 2011, the newspaper reported.

Tift, ranked No. 1 in Class AAAAAA, plays tonight (Wednesday) at home against McEachern in the first round of the state tournament.

Oh no it wasnt spring. It was during the summer. Not blaming the kid. Blaming the system more or less.

Also, if they are going to move….I think the family should leave the county. This doesnt always happen.

Games well attended, yes. And if you took every one of those fans, home and away, and put them in the Devil’s Den, they wouldn’t fill the 50-yard line section of the home side from top to bottom. Football rules. Tift County’s leadership needs to figure that out.

Charger Fan: You are missing my point these are kids play high school sports. No sport or kid is more important than another. And if you disagree then your priorities in life are messed up. Lets do some math here 1. How big is a football field? 2. How big is a basketball court? Which venue lends itself to seat more people? So the number of seats is a very weak argument. Lets be honest what else is there to do during football season in Tifton. I love football don’t get me wrong, but I am not a football hater like you guys seem to be about basketball. My point although rudely stated is we should support all our sports and no one sport is better than another. And my last comment is; If I make more money than you, does that make me more important then you? This is my final post on this issue because ” A man convinced against his will is still a man unconvinced” Go Big Blue!!! Lets Win State!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

JLR, respectfully, your reasoning is flawed. The size of a football field is not necessarily commensurate with the size of its stands. Class A fields obviously have smaller bleachers. The inarguable point is that stadiums (bleachers) in Georgia are much larger than the average stadium in most other states, and for good reason. You’re just being irrational if you think basketball is as important in Georgia as football is. There’s not even an argument. You’re dumbing down the argument by seeming to suggest that I made it personal by saying football kids are more important than basketball kids. I never talked about the kids. I talked about the selfish adults who have ruined the flagship sport, the one that pays for most other sports (although Tift’s basketball by now probably pays for itself). There is no denying football is king in South Georgia. There is no denying Tift County used to be a state force. It is now a joke. It should not be. The fact that it was successful in the past shows that the infrastructure is there to be successful now. That has been my point all along. Master Blaster has been saying the same thing. Tift can win the basketball state championship the next 10 years in a row and it wouldn’t mean as much to that community as one football state championship. It doesn’t mean the football kids are more important. It means football is the fabric of South Georgia life.

Hey shut up and get over it already! Basketball is what’s hot right now and has been for the last 20 years. Fottball in tifton is non-existent at the moment. Basketball is the only consistent sport in tifton but yet we have ppl like some of you who want to down a sport just because you are not that fond of it. Why don’t you just support your alma mater and shut up. Grow up please! GO BIG BLUE! Bring a State Title back to Tifton.

Henjamcol, hate to burst your bubble, but I know from a reliable source (the parent of a player from a neihboring school) that North Cobb reps. came to his home this past summer to inquire about their son transferring to their school, of which they declined. I will not put the kids name in the post like some others have, that is not fair to the kid, but the schools you mention that do it right, don’t be so sure. They all do the same.

Any transfer should be required to sit out a year, and that would preclude the top players from moving schools in all sports. Most don’t ever move, they continue to live in the same house and get in the car and drive to the new school they desire to play at. We in Georgia owe the kids a chance to get the education at the school of their choice, but we do not owe them the opportunity to play of a championship team in any sport. It has gotten to the point where everyone knows that cheating is occurring and everyone just looks the other way. 6000 transfers last year and many many for strictly athletic purposes. TIFT COUNTY has always been BASKETBALL school. They have had intermittent football success, but very little since Worth Bowers was the quarterback and Tift played for the State Championship in 1997. The 1997 team beat a good Brookwood team who had beaten Valdosta the year before to win the AAAA State Championship in the Georgia Dome and then lost a hard fought one to Parkview in the State Championship Game at Parkview. 15 years have gone by now and very little success on the football field except for the 2006 team. That is really a shame, but talking with Region 1-AAAA coaches, Tift County has always been a terrible place for a head football coach politically. Brodie, Winslette, and my coach Jay Walls were all capable and winning coaches who dealt with the politics of Tifton and Tift County even though they had winning records. We have no one to blame except ourselves because when we find a good coach, he often leaves because the Superintendent doesn’t like him or a certain faction of the fan base doesn’t like him. You can have a decent team in the region we play in, 1-AAAA, and go 4-6 or 5-5. Since the 12-3 State Champion runner-up in 1997, the only thing to be excited about was the 2006 team that was a 12-2 team and we lost to Roswell in the Dome. Over the past 13-14 years, the Blue Devils have had a record of 69-90, and the overall record of football at Tift County High is 288-248 for a winning percentage of 53%. As good a coach as Coach Brodie was, he only had one state champion in 18 years. Seeing the facts laid out, it is hard to say the Tift County is a football school. As most of the old timers in South Georgia will tell you, Tift County from the early days has always been a basketball school. Certain members of the basketball teams of the past would have been great football players, but were required to practice basketball year round to assure a starting position on the hardwood. This practice would have never happened at Valdosta, Lowndes, Colquitt, or Coffee. That is the difference in a basketball school and a football school.

Why don’t everyone show up a board meetings and the proper venues to express their thoughts rather than a public forum. These coaches, administrators, etc… aren’t hard to find, meet with them face to face and express your concerns, suggestions, comments, etc… Otherwise, just support your teams. As for recruiting, these players parents have the right to move if they want to move and give their children the best opportunity to play in successful programs. I’m not saying it’s right but it’s their choice.
