The Miller Grove boys’ team may be young and less heralded, but the results are looking mighty familiar.
Kyre’ Hamer scored 25 points and Keith Pinckney added 20 as the Wolverines pulled away from Sequoyah in a 79-57 win to advance the second round of the Class AAAA playoffs. The Wolverines, who are seeking their fifth straight title, picked up the tempo and that freed up Hamer, who drilled five 3-pointers.
Miller Grove led by six, 33-27, at the half and coach Sharman White said Sequoyah was the aggressor. But the coach challenged his team to play harder in the second half. They did. The defense came up with timely stops and the offense began to click to break open the game.
The Wolverines (26-3) have only three seniors and no All-Americans, White said. But White said he loves coaching this group of kids.
“Nobody gave us a chance so they play with a chip on their shoulder,” White said. “It’s making a difference as we continue the season.”
Dalton Satterfield led Sequoyah with 16 points.
