Jonesboro seniors Victoria Florence and Briana Benson combined to score 14 of the Cardinals’ 18 fourth quarter points to pull away from Woodland-Stockbridge and claim the Region 4AAAA title with a 64-55 win at Woodland.
The win for Jonesboro (24-3) avenged an earlier loss to the Wolfpack, 57-50, back on Dec. 4. Both Florence and Benson were the leading scorers for Jonesboro with 15 apiece, while Woodland’s Lindsey Reed led all scorers with 24.
Woodland led 16-14 after the first quarter in a game that was close for the first three quarters. But Jonesboro took a 46-40 lead entering the final period. Then Florence and Benson opened the fourth quarter with an 8-0 run to essentially put the game away for the Cardinals. Florence knocked down back-to-back three pointers and Benson converted a put-back to push the Jonesboro lead to 54-40 early in the quarter.
Woodland (26-2) closed the gap to seven, 62-55, with just under two minutes left in the game, after a bucket and free throw by Care Bacon, who finished with 11 points. But that would be the end of the scoring for the Wildcats as Victoria Sutton knocked down two free throws for Jonesboro for the final points of the night.
Both teams advance to the state playoffs and will host a first round contest next week. Jonesboro advanced to the semifinals last season, after knocking out Woodland in the first round.
