For the second time this season, Eagle’s Landing and Jonesboro went to over time. And for the second time this season, Eagle’s Landing came out on top.
Senior Maurice Green came off the bench and was huge. His only basket of the night was a three-pointer that broke a 53-53 tie with just 40 seconds left in overtime, as the Golden Eagles won the Region 4AAAA title, 58-44 over the Cardinals.
Eagle’s Landing (23-5) led by as many as eight, 36-28, midway through the third quarter after a bucket inside by 6-foot-10 center Desmond Ringer (committed to South Carolina), who finished with 14 points. But Joneboro (22-4) clawed back, and finally tied the game at 50-50, after reserve forward John Walker knocked down a three-pointer – his only points of the game – with less than a minute to play in regulation.
Both teams then had an opportunity to win in regulation. Eagle’s Landing forward Chris Davenport slammed home a thunderous one-handed dunk with 40 seconds left but was called for charging, which nullified the basket. But Jonesboro turned the ball over on its next possession when senior guard Cam Sutton was called for holding the ball longer than five seconds, with :08 left in regulation.
Then each team missed the back half of a one-and-one free throw opportunity – Eric Wortham for Eagle’s Landing and Daniel Peace for Jonesboro – with less than 5 seconds to go.
