Boys rankings: Eagle’s Landing, Buford, Greenforest nab No. 1 spots entering state tournament

These are the last boys rankings before state championship games.  There are three new No. 1 teams – Eagle’s Landing (AAAA), Buford (AA) and Greenforest Christian (A). Previoius No. 1’s Columbia and M.D. Mohammed lost in their region tournaments, and Cartersville lost Monday in its regular-season final game.

1. Tift County (23-4)

2. North Cobb (23-4)

3. Norcross (22-6)

4. Shiloh (23-6)

5. Hillgrove (24-4)

6. Peachtree Ridge (19-9)

7. Wheeler (18-8)

8. Westlake (22-5)

9. Alpharetta (19-9)

10. Chattahoochee (21-7)

Notes: Previous No. 4 North Gwinnett (19-5) failed to make the state playoffs, beaten by Meadowcreek in the Region 7 quarterfinals. … No. 9 Alpharetta, which won the Region 6 tournament, replaced North Gwinnett in the rankings. … Previous No. 6 Westlake is only a third seed from Region 3, which was won by fifth-place regular-season finisher Tri-Cities (12-13). … Also congrats to Druid Hills (16-9) for winning Region 2 as a sixth seed.

1. Miller Grove (25-3)

2. Effingham County (24-4)

3. Northside-Columbus (20-4)

4. Stephenson (16-11)

5. Mays (22-6)

6. Tucker (18-10)

7. Allatoona (22-6)

8. Gainesville (19-9)

9. Northside-Warner Robins (19-9)

10. Jenkins (20-8)

Notes: Region 6 bias alert – Stephenson, Mays and Tucker are in the top six despite a combined 27 losses. They finished behind four-time state champ Miller Grove in the Region 6 tournament. Stephenson was a controversial No. 10 team in the rankings when its record was 13-11 against a brutal schedule.  We’ll saw how the Jags do from here. … Previous No. 2 Allatoona finished third in Region 7 after being upset by eventual champ New Manchester, which didn’t crack the Top 10 at 18-9 but has won 10 straight. Allatoona had won by 23 points the first time they met and stayed in the Top 10. .  … Two other Cinderella region champions didn’t make it. Whitewater (17-11) was only 7-7, third in its division of Region 4, but won the title. Sprayberry (19-9) also was third in its subregion but won Region 7. … Previous No. 6 Mount Zion of Jonesboro failed to qualify for state out of Region 4 and dropped from the rankings. … Previous No. 8 Lithia Springs failed to qualify out of Region 7, beaten by Villa Rica, and dropped out. … Previous No. 9 Sequoyah lost twice last week and finished fourth in Region 7 and dropped out. … Moving in were region champions Gainesville (Region 8) and Northside-Warner Robins (Region 1). Also cracking the Top 10 was Region 3 runner-up Jenkins, which scores well with computers that analyze strength of schedule and such. Jenkins has lost once in Georgia since New Year’s Day, that to No. 2 Effingham County in the region final.

Class AAAA

1. Eagle’s Landing (22-5)

2. South Atlanta (24-4)

3. Columbia (24-3)

4. Marist (21-4)

5. Jonesboro (22-5)

6. Statesboro (24-3)

7 Monroe (22-4)

8. Westover (20-5)

9. Glenn Hills (24-3)

10. Rutland (20-5)

Notes: The new No. 1 is Eagle’s Landing, which has won 13 straight since New Year’s Day, including a 58-54 overtime victory over No. 5 Jonesboro in the region 4 final Saturday. The Golden Eagles’ only Georgia loss is to No. 1 Tift County of AAAAAA. … Previous No. 1 and 2012 state champion Columbia lost in its Region 6 final to new No. 2 South Atlanta 74-73 on Saturday. South Atlanta, which also has a fine case for No. 1, has avenged its 2013 losses to Grady and No. 4 Marist and beaten Columbia twice. … Previous No. 10 Alexander lost to Fayette County in overtime in the Region 5 semifinals and dropped out. … Newly ranked is Region 2 champ Rutland, which beat out a host of pretty good candidates that include region champions LaGrange (R5), Northwest Whitfield (R7) and Johnson-Gainesville (R8), not to mention Butler, which has beaten No. 9 Glenn Hills the last two times they’ve met. AAAA is much deeper than AAAAA when it comes to finding worthy teams to rank, imho.

Class AAA

1. Buford (22-6)

2. Savannah (24-3)

3. Johnson-Savannah (20-6)

4. Cartersville (26-1)

5. Morgan County (22-5)

6. Woodward Academy (22-5)

7. North Hall (25-3)

8. Thomson (17-6)

9. Washington County (21-5)

10. St. Pius (20-8)

Notes: Previous No. 1 Cartersville, which had been the last unbeaten team in Georgia, lost to Gordon Central 80-72 in a regular-season finale on Monday, then bounced back to win the Region 5 tournament. The ‘Canes still took a nice tumble in the rankings because of its schedule, which is ranked the softest among Top 10 teams. … The new No. 1 is Buford, which avenged its only loss since Jan. 1 in the Region 7 tournament final against No. 7 North Hall. … Also worthy was No. 2 Savannah, which beat previous No. 2 and city arch-rival Johnson in the Region 1 championship game. Savannah was the AAAAA runner-up in 2012. …  No. 8 Thomson beat No. 9 Washington County in the Region 3 final. … Previous No. 9 Cedar Grove lost twice and got the fourth seed from tough Region 6 but dropped from the rankings. No. 10 St. Pius, the Region 6 runner-up, got that spot. … Almost ranked Dodge County despite three straight losses to finish the season, all to ranked teams (WaCo, Northside-WR and Thomson). Watch out for the Indians if they play Savannah in Round 2.

Class AA

1. Greater Atlanta Christian (24-3)

2. Vidalia (26-1)

3. Westside-Augusta (20-3)

4. Laney (19-8)

5. Jordan (18-6)

6. Manchester (22-4)

7. Bleckley County (24-3)

8. Pelham (20-7)

9. Taylor County (21-7)

10. Dublin (18-9)

Notes: The Top 10 teams from last week either won their region tournament, or lost to another Top 10 team. No. 5 Jordan beat No. 6 Manchester in the Region 5 semis, then clobbered unranked Spencer 70-44 in the final. Manchester, which spent much of the season ranked No. 1, is only a No. 3 seed so faces a tough road to get to back to the state final four. … In Region 2, No. 3 Westside beat No. 4 Laney, which beat No. 10 Dublin. No upsets there. … Previous No. 3 Bleckley County lost to No. 9 Taylor County 63-61 in the Region 4 final. Bleckley is 2-1 vs. Taylor and stayed ahead in the rankings.

Class A

1. Greenforest Christian (23-4)

2. Aquinas (19-6)

3. St. Francis (21-8)

4. North Cobb Christian (22-4)

5. Wilkinson County (25-2)

6. W.D. Mohammed (23-2)

7. Mitchell County (24-4)

8. Turner County (20-4)

9. Athens Christian (22-4)

10. Seminole County (21-5)

Notes: Previous No. 1 (now No. 6) W.D. Mohammed lost to Landmark Christian 66-61 in the semifinals of the Region 5 tournament, which was won by new No. 1 Greenforest Christian. Greenforest’s only Class A loss is to WDM on a buzzer-beater. Greenforest’s other losses are to larger-class state contenders South Atlanta and Norcross, none by more than four points. … Previous No. 2 North Cobb Christian lost to Whitefield Academy 50-44 in the Region 6 tournament, which was won by new No. 3 St. Francis in a 71-64 overtime win over Whitefield. … Previous No. 3 Wilkinson County lost to new No. 2 Aquinas 73-65 in the Region 7 tournament final. … Previous No. 4 Mitchell County lost to new No. 10 Seminole County 74-47 in the Region tournament final. … Dropping out of the rankings is Excel Christian (25-2) which finished fourth in the Region 6 tourney.

Marist will never win a State title with Greg McClaire as the head coach! Has every thing to do with his inability to get the most out of talented, but always underperforming Marist team(s). Of course, the race baiters will say…only posting this because Coach McClaire is black. Hogwash. The coach at Miller Grove or South Atlanta would be perforable to this clown. Matter of fact, give me Coach Michael Reddick right now and Marist wins the AAAA tourney! Can we trade coaches with South Atlanta?
Color is an excuse most often used by those who blame society woes on racism, and not on the fact that sometimes incompetence does indeed creep through and attain really good head coaching positions, when they never deserved it in the first place…

I keep hearing these other guys but no 1 have said anything bouth south atlanta back court #12jr #3jr #23sr all made the all region team nobody gave us a chance. And #23 not even mention with the bests in the state that’s crazy they better take another look numbers don’t lie, that’s crazy right now he playing the best basketball and shoulda won MVP of the Regionals not taking anything away from tahj but he beat them twice by his self dam near. Come on with the games and I see all the talks about the best guards in the state of ga and not 1 time is this man name mention. It’s jus sad to me.

Ok South Atlanta I’ll give you the win earlier when you guys came to columbia but lastnight the way that 2nd half was called was a joke, the whole first half the refs let both teams play but 2nd half south atlanta was still beating columbia up and no calls and we was without our 2nd best player #22 because he was suspended, but congrats on the region but those arent the banners we after we prefer the state one, and lastnight was the 1st time I saw a 4 shot foul, where they do that at I guess south atlanta

@eagles fan it was a good game but we wasn’t making any jump shots none 1st half either wide open looks they started falling 2nd half. And #12 for south atlanta had a bad game to our #3 never played like that none this year i mean he step up bog for us this game. And that was a lane violation on y’all that’s why he shot 4. I know Kiair didn’t play but he did play the 1st game and we still won that game kinda easily. So by kiair not playing shouldn’t be no excuse. We will see ya in the finals when y’all have y’all whole squad where there shouldn’t be any excuses

GHSA PLEASE LOOK AT GREENFOREST BEFORE THE STATE TOURNAMENT. They have 39 kids in their high school and 6 kids over 6′6 on their basketball team. Half their team is from Africa and probably on scholarship. How in the world is that an even playing field for public or private?!?!?!?!??

Coach David Jones at Greenforest is at every AAU tournament. He always talking to my players and he told one of my guys that they will never get caught cuz GHSA doesn’t care about basketball and they dont look at all black schools

It’s one thing to post opinions, it is quite another to post blatant lies. AAU coach, you are a liar. As someone who has worked closely with Coach Jones for years, as well as played for him, I can tell you that he does not spend his time at AAU tournaments and definitely not trying recruit any of the players there. As one of the winningest coaches in Georgia, he doesn’t have to. He would never make a comment like you said to any person, much less a kid. People who aren’t in the know, will do whatever they can to speculate and manufacture facts. @Bball fan – As for the GHSA looking into his team, who do think certifies players as eligible before they play? The GHSA. You too, choose to assume facts, which is evident by your use of the word “probably”. And if it was so “uneven”, why are they not undefeated. Worry about your own team, and for the record, there are more than 39 kids in there high school. There are hundreds of former players, as well as coaches, that will attest to everything that I have written. I run into them almost everyday.

The Revelation

February 17th, 2013

Bball fan, you are obviously a rookie to the landscape of high school basketball in Georgia and the process of the GHSA. Otherwise, why would you request that the GHSA look at Greenforest?!? You should know that the GHSA is the body that rules kids eligible or ineligible to play in the first place. Why would they need to look back at their own work? As far as an even playing field is concerned, private schools have been bringing kids in and putting them on scholarship for years. Don’t get upset because one school is doing it better than another one. They all have the opportunity to build their programs. Some do it better than others…

AAU coach, you sound like a lying hater. Your attempt to soil the name of the 3rd most winning coach in the history of basketball in the state of Georgia is disgusting. I am certain that your efforts at a fledgling hobby as an AAU participant must be frustrating for you, but you should know that your arms are much too short to touch a living legend like Coach David Jones. Focus your time on trying to accomplish something of some significance, instead of sitting on the sidelines lobbing untrue accusations at a REAL coach.

David Jones who was at old Southwest High in the mid-70’s when

Yes it’s the same David jones from sw atl that has admitted on several occasions that he recruits players and it’s up to the GHSA to stop him. He feels like since everyone else is doing it why shouldn’t he. I read an article about him this year where he actually talked about the kid that signed with UAB and how he brought him in but he was in eligible but he let him practice with the team for a year while he prepared him. It’s a f-ing joke. U got less than 100 kids(39… 79 who cares the exact number) in your high school and the AVERAGE height of ur team is 6′5 with 3 guys over 6′7!!!!!! Please most AAAAAA schools can’t get that! Oh and I’ll give u $100 if u can pronounce the name of 5 guys on their team. U can’t cuz half of them were born out of the country

PopeUGAXXIII, you are showing your ignorance as well as your lack of knowledge of BB history in GA. There is one and only one David Jones in GA. The one who has placed more children in college than the number of children that you know. Stop spreading opinions as truths, when you obviously know nothing about which you are trying to comment. The “stir in Athens” was during 1980-81, and was caused by the racism in Athens because he was married to an African American Law student at UGA. Evidently, the Cedar Shoals-Athens community was too racist and closed minded to deal with the reality which so much of the civilized world accepts as no one’s business but the couple’s. It had nothing to do with BB. And judging by your post and others from that area, I see that nothing has changed there in thirty years. Get the facts right because a lie told enough times becomes the reality for weak-minds.

Stop hating and leave Coach David Boyd out of this…by the way, I’m not sure about what “similar” claims that you are speaking of. What is it with all this negativity? Have you ADULTS forgotten what you are really talking about? It’s high school KIDS. I saw GF play in the Region championship and they were losing a large portion of that game, there was nothing “uneven” about it. Landmark played a very good game and just didn’t pull it out in the end. It wasn’t a 40 point blow-out. I also got a chance to catch them play Westminster earlier in the year close game, not a blow-out) and Westminster’s team matched them in terms of size. I know about kids that left Whitefield and are now at Norcross. Have some perspective. IJS, we as adults are setting a bad example for our kids by getting on a blog site and spotting hatred and nonsense. And if you have a certain level of intelligence, you should be able to pronounce a kid’s name, no matter where he is from. We too have kids from other countries playing sports at our school. My 2 cents…..

All elite high schools team recruit. Either legally or illegally. The ones that win do it better than the others. Because of AAU ball and the “me” society players and parents will continue to go to the schools that will give them the best shot at going to college for free. College tuition is not cheap! And the whole private school public school split for basketball is a joke bc they both do it. Look at norcross, a public school, they have the 3 starters from last years class A state champs Whitefield academy. Or look at wilkinson. Their coach is also the superintendent of the school district. Do u really think anyone can turn him in even I’d they wanted to? Greenforest has several kids from Africa that are not paying tuition, that much is obvious, but they are legal according to the GHSA. Until the GHSA actually grows balls and says no more athletic scholarships and no more player transfers then high school basketball will continue to be glorified AAU ball with the “haves” beating the “haves not”

February 17th, 2013
9:36 pm

@A former GA teacher: frankly i don’t give a hoot of who’s on the GF team, but no one is trying to embellish anything, According to team roster on GaPrep which actually gets it’s info directly from each school GF does have 3 players 6′7″ or better. Precious Ayah 6′7″, Ugo Celestin 6′7″, and Tosin Mehinti 6′9″. Heck let’s throw in Faisal Abdul-Malik at 6′6″. According to roster stats the average height on this small “A” is almost 6′4′. Quite the accomplishment. So I don’t think anyone is blatantly lying, it’s what the roster says, unless you can show otherwise.

Typical of some Emory clown to post a comment about David Jones’
wife. I have absolutely no idea of who was or is married to him & I have
no interest in that whatsoever. What I was referring to is the number of
players who mysteriously wandered into his school zone when he was
coaching public schools. Geezzz
Over the years, I have found that most Emory people resemble ones
with self-supporting superior intellects. Let me assist you on the racist
definition which you don’t seem to know. A racist thinks his own race
is superior to other races which is certainly not the case with me. At
least know the meaning of the words you use before you choose to
lecture people about a subject that you clearly don’t understand. If
