AAAAAA first-round state-playoff matchups

Here is the Class AAAAAA state basketball playoff draw.  It’s unofficial.

On Sunday afternoon, AJC.com will post first-round matchups in all classifications. This is a sneak preview in the highest classification. If you see errors, let us know.

The region Cinderellas on the boys side (let’s call them Cinderfellas) are Tri-Cities and Druid Hills, both finishing fifth or worse in the regular season, then winning their region tournaments. Both are in the top quarter of the draw.

The second quarter of the draw looks really tough.  No. 1-ranked Tift County could face Westlake in the second round.

In the girls side, check out the possibility of second-ranked Norcross at third-ranked Parkview in the second round.

Girls games are scheduled for Tuesday, boys for Wednesday, but they could go on the same night as double-headers if a school has both a boys and girls home game. Those schools include Norcross, North Cobb, Tift County, Alpharetta and Archer. Unless we missed somebody.

Todd, you need a correction on North Gwinnet double header, the boys are toast, only the girls are winners. NG got beat in the quarters. Also Norcross could have a double header since the girls are a #2 and the boys #1 and both are at home. I saw both those games tonight. NG girls just controlled Norcross, kind of surprising.

Yeah, I guess I’m still in denial about North Gwinnett’s boys. No boys-girls double-header for N.G. … As for the girls, the NG-NX rivalry is pretty strong. I think the fourth time that they play, if they do, is unpredictable. Or maybe you’d predict it better than I would since you witnessed that last one.

I’ve inserted Valdosta boys for Colquitt. I accidentally copied the girls #3-4 from that region into the boys.

For a while, we had the North Cobb-McEachern girls reversed. Two media outlets and one tournament official were wrong on that outcome (and I guess we were one of them for a brief time), but for the record – North Cobb beat McEachern 53-52 in the girls final of 4-AAAAAA. North Cobb’s boys won despite missing Neff and Steele, two top-of-the-line starters. Steele won’t return. Hopefully Neff will.

Way to go North Cobb Lady Warriors and Warriors. All roads lead to Macon!

I’ve seen NG and NX many times over the last 3 years, and you’re right, the 4th time they meet will be a barn burner, and yes they’ll meet in Macon for all the marbles. I still give a slight edge to Norcross but DeShields will have to play 32 minutes, she loafed for about 15 minutes today.

Diamond has played injured all season and has sat out a number of easier games. If she is not 100% they will not beat a 28-0 Parkview team on the road in round two let alone a 25-1 North Gwinnett in Macon. I truly believe she is more seriously hurt then we really know.

Westlake will be a tough #3 seed. One bad loss cost them a #1seed.

Wow. The upper left AAAAAA bracket is one of the weakest I’ve ever seen with Druid Hills and Tri-Cities as the Number 1 Seeds. Just wow.

Just broke. GHSA is ruling in on Tift Co. investigation. Two infractions against them. Probably just a fine. Too bad no other penalty, which is good because you do not want the kids to suffer for the coach’s arrogant mistake.

It must not be major if true or they wouldn’t have played championship game. I’m sure the school was notified before letter sent. If tiftarea news is accurate.

sgabball, your right, because if it was a major infraction AJC, Tifton Gazette, and every other GA outlet would lead with that story. I can’t find that story anywhere.

High school basketball fans, when it comes to kids bouncing from school to school for greener pastures, don’t get mad at the kid, look within your program. These kids who play at that elite level are looking for the best situation to get college scholarships and collegiate exposure. If your program don’t network with colleges and have them coming to scout your players, chances are that elite player will leave. This is occurring all over the country, not just here in GA. Just my opinion.

GHSA must do something about these controlling referees throughout the year. 15-13 foul count in one half… and 12-10 in the first half. consistently..This is why AAU is becoming a recruiting ground for top talent… The game has passed alot of these text book referees who immediately take simple comments as threats or EGO infractions… It’s really bad in the gwinnett area 7AAAAAA and 8AAAAAA… These are your top athletes in the state and yet they call the games as though it’s Rec. Ball… “THE TRUTH”

The Truth you are right about the refs. We (NCobb) had our defensive stopper thrown out the Region Championship game vs Mceachern . They let the girls body slam each other and get mugged without calling fouls then when they got in each others face he calls a tech and throws our girl out. Now she is gone for 2 games in the playoffs. They think it’s about them. He had a smug smile on his face and I wish I could have a few words with him.

Well actual the girl thrown out of the game on the North Cobb girls team called the ref. “stupid”~she was not thrown out until she overreacted to the ref’s ruling instead of letting the coach handle the matter she took the matter into her own hands~ she is known to have a mouth on the court using curse words at the player’s such as the “b” word that is unsportsmenlike conduct and should not be tolerated period so she was thrown out~ it was the best thing that could ever happen to her~ I hope she has learned a valueable lesson~Congrats NCobb

Tift County ruling came out yesterday and the team was vindicated, no recruiting violations. Tift County has an outstanding basketball program of which the head coach goes out of his way to make sure these kids get into college and have scholarship opportunities. That is what it is all about, furthering these kids athletically as well as academically.

TIFTON — Two days before the top-ranked Tift County Blue Devils basketball team is set to begin play in the state Class AAAAAA tournament, the program has received good news from the Georgia High School Association.

In a statement sent to The Tifton Gazette Monday morning, the GHSA said, “After an extensive investigation, it could not be verified that Tift was guilty of any recruiting violations.”

The investigation, which began in October, was a result of allegations from the Turner County School System that Tift County had recruited a high school player and a middle school player.

“It feels good to be vindicated,” said Tift County High athletic director Rusty Smith said. “We felt good about the situation, because the Georgia High School Association had approved every one of our players (as eligible to play for Tift County).”

Head coach Eric Holland said Monday that he was unaware that the investigation had ended. “I just let the powers-that-be handle that,” he said. “I wasn’t worried about it because I knew we had done nothing wrong.”

Smith went on to add, “We cooperated fully with the Georgia High School Association on the matter. It was a long process, but I am glad it’s over and the kids and coaches can concentrate on the state tournament.”

While Tift was cleared of recruiting, there was another violation the GHSA did find.

The statement said, “During the investigation it was discovered that the school held an illegal practice in November of 2011. As a result of this illegal practice, the school was fined an undisclosed amount and the basketball program was put on severe warning status from now through the end of the 2014 season. That means that any similar violations by the basketball program during the warning period would result in much more severe penalties.”

Tift will open up play in the state Class AAAAAA tournament Wednesday against McEachern.

Holly, I can appreciate what you said and I can’t say that I don’t disagree with you. My point is that the Ref’s allow play to get so physical and out of hand that these incidents tend occur too often.
