Class AAAAA No. 9 Southwest DeKalb reversed a one-point Miller Grove halftime lead and upset the third-ranked Lady Wolverines 60-47 for the Region 6 title Saturday night at Mays High in Atlanta.
The Lady Panthers trailed through most of the first half, but Davion Wingate’s three-point play with one second to go before halftime cut Miller Grove’s lead to 19-18 at the break. Her 3-pointer one minute into the second half gave Southwest DeKalb the lead for good at 23-21. The Lady Panthers pushed their lead to 36-27 at the end of the third quarter and led by as many as 16 in the fourth.
Nicole Martin finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds to lead Southwest DeKalb, getting half her point total from the foul line in the final period. Wingate added 16 points and three steals and Daisa Alexander put in 10 points.
Miller Grove was led by 16 points from Katie Hunt, and Klarissa Weaver added 11 points and 10 rebounds. Last year’s Class AAAA champions will enter this year’s Class AAAAA tournament as the second seed. Top-ranked Tucker won third place with a 63-54 win over No. 2 Stephenson.
