Report: Kaela Davis treated for inner-ear disease

Kaela Davis, the Georgia Tech women’s basketball signee who left her Buford high school team last week, is being treated for an inner-ear disease that causes hearing loss and vertigo, according to a report by ESPN.

Buford has Meniere’s disease and has lost 90 percent of her hearing in her left ear.

“Now we’re concerned about her other ear,” her father, former NBA player Antonio Davis, told ESPN’s Walter Villa. “This is something we’ve never discussed publicly before. We don’t want pity for our daughter. But we felt it was something we had to address now because of the decision to pull her from the team.”

The decision to take Davis off the team was her parents’ decision, according to the story. Davis suffers from spells of dizziness and nausea, her father said.

“Her health is the most important thing,” Antonio Davis said. “I don’t want her to deal with this for the rest of her life. This is something we need to address now.”

Davis helped lead Norcross to a state championship in 2010 as a teammate of Diamond DeShields. Davis transferred the next season to Buford and won another state title. Buford was the Class AA runner-up in 2012.

Buford is currently ranked No. 1 in Class AAA.

Buford coach Gene Durden did not comment on Davis’ departure last week. Buford plays West Hall in a Region 7-AAA playoff game Wednesday.

I hope Ms. Davis is able to recover from this inner ear disease. It’s sad that many who did not know her situation were openly speculating other reasons for her leaving the team.

Ernest – many know the situation and not speculating.
WOW! Quite the E-SPiN article gone AJC. The only doctors at work here, are the spin doctors in a desperate attempt at damage control. Let’s break this down. If this is all about the inner ear, why wasn’t she shirted, sitting on the bench supporting her team all these weeks like any other injured player? Quick! spin that. Are vertigo specialists are only available on Saturdays, and Tues/Fri. evenings. Maybe it was the concern that the spells are so unpredictable they could send her reeling off the sideline chair provoking further injury. Let’s hope she’s not behind the wheel alone…poses danger to herself and others.
Vertigo may help rationalize the barrage of missed shots during Wesleyan game, but what explains the visible displays of poor character and sportsmanship? I can see it now…ESPiN breaking news: Tech Signee Treated for Tourettes!

Get the facts straight. She wanted back on the team and Gene was going to let her. Her teammates then made a statement and said if she comes back they were done for good. Durden used to be respected but has gotten focused on winning at any cost (the recruiting trail) and lost respect of many. I would say he sold his soul to the devil. This used to be the case on the boys side and is now a trend on the girls. What are these teachers/coaches really teaching. Do we want to name other?

Hey Logic and Devil,
I hope you are both wrong. If you’ve never had vertigo symptoms before (I have) then you wouldn’t be able to relate. The part about the teammates, well maybe. I’d venture North Gwinnett girls would probably feel the same way if the truth were told.

She left b/c of disagreement with coach, the team tried to have meeting with her twice to talk about her attitude etc but she didn’t show up either time. They turned the page after that. Apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

Everyone is not telling the same lie. These are facts that can’t be denied. If she has an “illness” I truly hope she gets better, but illness or not, that attitude and sense of entitlement was so evident that everyone saw it and I commend the young ladies for standing up to her.

Coach Durden is a really good coach.. The town of Buford will rally & show we are not a one person show.. It’s about TEAM!!

Ask Hembre what happened. She knew and got rid of the problem. Enuf said.

Yeah right

She was asked by my sister in law, why she wasn’t playing and she told her that she got into an argument with the coach and quit. The University of Buford is actually a better team without her. Selfish and acts like a thug. Can’t wait to see how the elitest at Tech justify having this awsone student athlete on campus. From what I have seen, her brother is just as bad. Great job Mom and Dad. You raised some winners.

I do feel bad for the kids who are from Buford. Work your whole life to be good and have outsiders come in and take over your teams.

Stop it

@Yeah Right the kids from Buford would not be good if the outsiders didn’t come.

FACT: I have had Meniere’s disease for years. I played in high school and college with this disease and it can be debilitating. Mine was very difficult to handle at times. I too have lost my hearing in one of my ears. BUT, I still played at a high level and so could Kaela if that was her only issue. Unfortunately, the atttitude and entitlement she feels was and will be her downfall. I emphasize with her illness, but in life, ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING.

The University of Buford is much better without her. I have seen the results and how well they play as a team since she left. Are there any kids on Buford that are actually from Buford. (All their lives?) NO. They even have them transferring from Rabun County. Once these graduate, it will be interesting to see where Durden gets the next batch from. It is not on his bench!

Also, why wouldnt her coach comment on the situation? If it was an illness, he would have said how bad he felt for her and that he hoped she got better. It wouldnt have been, “no comment”. Nice try, mom and dad.

If you had to stop playing because of an illness, why do you leave the school as well? I guess she will be a NGHS graduate being there for 4 months.

Folks on the inside – players and parents – know what led to the Wesleyan debacle, and it wasn’t an ear issue. It was a heart issue – more specifically, another girl (post player) on the team and Kaela were locked in a fierce love “triangle”. That added a ton of stress inside the team. Not sure how it all played out, but regardless of the validity of the ear issue, that is what boiled over that night. (Emphasis on “triangle” intended).

Why do any of you care? To be so opininated about a high school girl and whatever issues she has is crazy. Pray for the young lady and all her flaws and move on with life!

Durden doesn’t recruit you morons. He is a great coach and got fed up with the attitude of Davis. Davis quit. She wanted back on but the decision was final. She was the one that quit. Get your facts straight.

Buford doesn’t have to recruit because kids are knocking the door down to get in. Haters gonna hate :-)

Durden doesn’t recruit. Why are there Bufordites hanging around 6th grade AAU tourneys putting out feelers for people from other Gwinnett schools?

Why Don’t these kids, who are obviously very talented transfer to 6a schools and play with the big boys and girls. No, they want to come to the mountains and play all the white kids. Each school in their region is lucky if they have a single college recruit on their team. Here comes Buford with at least 5 on each team. My nine year old even knows, the only way to get better is to play better competition. I just can’t see how long time Buford fans can beat their chest about how good they are with rent-a-players. These migrant players could give a crap about Buford. The longtime Buford fans and alumni must feel like a girl who really likes a guy, he takes her out, gets what he wants and never calls her again. Bet that feels goooood!!!

Hater, It is a shame that you have bring race in the discussion. However, it is true that these girls, once they are gone, have no allegiance to their school.

It is very difficult for Buford to schedule outside of their region, which they are REQUIRED to play, because the bigger schools are scared to play them. Take it up with the GHSA if you don’t like the regions. We have always beaten the stuffing out of our region teams even before the ‘rent a players’ that you call them. Haters gonna hate and it is ugly when they do.

All these IDIOTS out there saying, “haters gonna hate” need to grow up & talk like a productive member of society! You sound like an uneducated fool!
Hating, as they say, is not “hating” if the one being hated on is a scab to society! You are just calling them out for their childish, selfish actions!

You people are SICK!!!!! I work in the Dr’s office where this young lady is being treated! I could lose my job for even saying that! She is the SWEETEST, HUMBLE, most polite kids I’ve ever encountered IN MY LIFE! For adults to hide behind fake names and spread what I know to be lies says a lot about YOUR character! Or lack thereof! SICK! My husband says Buford is a community of uncivilized HICKS and he wishes what they were saying we’re true. She is too good for a group of people that would turn their backs on a kid once she wasn’t able to serve them and their purpose anymore! What a cruel & disgusting group of people.

People wonder why kids get bullied? Look at the way the adults are bullying this kid and each other on this forum, Did I read that this poor kid isn’t even at school? None of you knuckleheads even commented on that! My heartbreaks for this young lady. You people need to get a grip. I don’t know, but from the outside looking in it seems to me there’s a lot of inferiority induced sour grapes as far as this young lady and her family are concerned.
My prayers go out to her for a speedy recovery.
