Boys rankings: WD Mohammed new No. 1 in Class A

Final rankings before the region tournaments. New No. 1 in Class A – WD Mohammed.

Special note – AJC.com will be publishing schedules for all 48 region tournaments beginning at 3 p.m. today (Sunday).

Special note II – There are a half-dozen scores of ranked boys teams from Friday/Saturday that haven’t been reported. If we get those scores before 5 p.m., rankings might change.

Missing – MLK-Mays, Columbia-Chamblee, Vidalia-Toombs, Westside-Burke, Taylor County-Macon County.

Class AAAAAA

1. Tift County (21-4)

2. North Cobb (21-4)

3. Norcross (19-6)

4. North Gwinnett (19-5)

5. Hillgrove (22-3)

6. Westlake (21-4)

7. Shiloh (19-6)

8. Peachtree Ridge (17-8)

9. Chattahoochee (19-6)

10. Wheeler (16-8)

Notes: No. 1 Tift County beat Valdosta 63-46 on Saturday to close out the regular season for ranked teams. … Previous No. 3 (now No. 7) Shiloh was upset by Dacula 65-54 last week but clobbered Archer 69-44 on Friday in a game that decided the No. 1 seed in Region 8. … Previous No. 7 Wheeler (now No. 10) lost to Walton and Cherokee but held on to the top seed in Region 6 and a Top 10 ranking mainly for lack of solid candidates to replace the Wildcats. … Ditto perhaps for No. 9 Chattahoochee, which lost to Lambert 68-65 on Friday to end its 13-game winning streak but held the No. 1 seed for having beaten No. 2 seed Alpharetta twice during the regular season. … Top contenders include Archer (coming off a 25-point loss) and Rockdale County, the only regular-season region champ that isn’t ranked. Rockdale beat Lovejoy 63-62 on Saturday for that title.

Class AAAAA

1. Miller Grove (22-3)

2. Allatoona (20-5)

3. Effingham County (21-4)

4. Mays (18-5)

5. Tucker (17-7)

6. Mount Zion-Jonesboro (19-5)

7. Northside-Columbus (19-4)

8. Lithia Springs (19-6)

9. Sequoyah (20-5)

10. Stephenson (14-11)

Notes: For the first time this season, the AAAAA Top 10 went undefeated for the week. No changes in the rankings.

Class AAAA

1. Columbia (21-2)

2. Marist (19-3)

3. Eagle’s Landing (20-5)

4. Jonesboro (20-4)

5. South Atlanta (21-4)

6. Statesboro (22-3)

7 Monroe (21-3)

8. Glenn Hills (22-2)

9. Westover (18-5)

10. Alexander (20-5)

Notes: No. 1 Columbia beat No. 2 Marist 52-50 in overtime Tuesday. Marist held its ranking. … No. 5 South Atlanta beat previous No. 10 Grady 77-47 on Friday to avenge a loss. Grady dropped out, replaced by No. 10 Alexander, the No. 1 seed from Region 5. … Previous No. 4 Glenn Hills lost to Butler 72-61 on Friday. Butler (15-8) has administered both of Glenn Hills’ losses and captured the No. 1 seed in their division of Region 3. No. 7 Statesboro is No. 1 in the other subregion, meaning Statesboro or Butler can do no better than a No. 3 seed or the state playoffs.

Class AAA

1. Cartersville (24-0)

2. Johnson-Savannah (19-5)

3. Savannah (22-3)

4. Buford (19-6)

5. Washington County (20-4)

6. North Hall (23-2)

7. Morgan County (20-5)

8. Woodward Academy (20-5)

9. Cedar Grove (21-4)

10. Thomson (16-5)

Notes: No. 6 North Hall beat previous No. 2 (now No. 4) Buford 68-63 on Friday and won a coin-toss for the No. 1 seed in the Region 7 tournament. The teams split in the regular season. If there was a message in the outcome, it was that AAA should be one of the better state tournaments. AAA’s Top 10 is hard to rank and identify clear favorites. … No. 1 Cartersville plays Gordon Central on Monday in a postponed regular-season game. … Previous No. 10 Dawson County (20-5) dropped out after losing its final three regular-season games, albeit two of them to Top 10 Buford and North Hall. The other loss was to West Hall 62-52 on Friday. … New in the rankings is No. 10 Cedar Grove, which is 19-0 since Dec. 1 when not playing No. 8 Woodward Academy. Woodward lost its season finale to McNair 62-57 on Friday but retained the No. 1 seed in Region 6 for having beaten Cedar Grove twice.

Class AA

1. Greater Atlanta Christian (22-3)

2. Vidalia (23-1)

3. Bleckley County (23-2)

4. Westside-Augusta (17-3)

5. Manchester (21-3)

6. Laney (17-7)

7. Jordan (15-6)

8. Pelham (18-7)

9. Dublin (17-8)

10. Taylor County (17-7)

Notes: No. 4 Westside had a nice win Friday over AAA Top 10 team Thomson 83-70. … No. 5 Manchester beat No. 8 Jordan 61-55 on Tuesday but will be seeded No. 2 in the Region 5 tournament behind unranked Spencer, which beat Manchester in overtime Jan. 29. … No. 6 Laney beat previous No. 7 Dublin 58-53 on Friday. … Previous No. 10 McIntosh County Academy lost to Benedictine on Tuesday and dropped out of the rankings. … No. 10 Taylor County is back in the rankings.

Class A

1. W.D. Mohammed (22-1)

2. North Cobb Christian (21-3)

3. Wilkinson County (23-1)

4. Mitchell County (22-3)

5. Greenforest Christian (20-4)

6. Turner County (19-4)

7. Aquinas (17-6)

8. Wilcox County (20-3)

9. Excel Christian (24-1)

10. Athens Christian (19-4)

Notes: Previous No. 1 North Cobb Christian lost to St. Francis (17-8) 88-74 on Friday. It was St. Francis that upset unbeaten NCC in the first round of the state playoffs in 2012. The new No. 1 is W.D. Mohammed. Why? NCC and No. 3 Wilkinson County have played tougher schedules and probably are the teams to beat in the private and public state tournaments. But W.D. Mohammed is the only Class A team that is unbeaten in Class A. The Caliphs’ only loss is to No. 5 Hillgrove of AAAAAA. They’ve  beaten No. 5 Greenforest Christian. … Previous No. 6 (now No. 10) Athens Christian lost to unranked Lakeview Academy 61-60 on Thursday. … There is no tournament in Region 2, so No. 7 Turner County and No. 9 Wilcox County are playing a makeup regular-season game Friday. … There are more worthy Top 10 teams in A than in any other class, imo. Hard to keep out St. Francis, Mount Paran Christian, Dooly County, Holy Innocents’, Seminole County, Lakeview Academy and others.

With 7 divisions can you even find 70 teams worth listing?

‘With 7 divisions can you even find 70 teams worth listing?’

We’re ranking only 6 divisions (combining Class A), but to answer your question, probably not. Some teams are daring us to drop them from the Top 10 but can’t get their wish. Wheeler has 8 losses – 2 last week vs. teams that haven’t been ranked all season – but who do you put in their place? Wheeler is a No. 1 seed in its region. Maybe we should go from Top 10 rankings to Elite 8.

Ironically, Class A is very deep. There are lots of good ’small school’ teams in Georgia if measured by how close #15 is to #5.

No love for Evans in AAAAA? They are 21-4. I get that the region is pretty weak, but I’d think they should be at least at 10 in place of a 14-11 team.

Look out for Gainesville one of the hottest teams in AAAAA. Still riding a high from the State football championship.

Thank you Todd for your continued respect and coverage of a team well south of Atlanta… The Tift County Blue Devils. They are a very good team enjoying a fine season but the playoff will tell the story. At the very least they are a dangerous draw in the tourney.

David – When looking for teams to rank, we start by looking at computer rankings to show what teams are on the radar and then study from there. Not saying it’s right or wrong, but Evans was ranked #29 in AAAAA last week by the Maxwell Ratings. That means ‘off the radar.’ I guess the low rating is a combination of playing a light schedule but also a pair of 30-point losses to AAAA teams.

Country Boy – Thanks. Don’t know if Tift is the best or not, but certainly in the conversation. Pretty hard to ignore a pair like Jackson/Greene.

Go Lions! Westlake is trending in the right direction in this week’s ranking. Last week #8 and this week #6. WHS easily defeating rival Langston Hughes on Senior Night as well as the retirement ceremony for Cam Newton jersey #2. Their first Regional Playoff game will be Thursday at E. Coweta High School. Go Lions!!!

I think this is the perfect amount of regions for the State. Now schools that should have been in lower classifications years ago are now in their respectful divisions. The problem is there is just too many counties and schools for this state. For ex. the city of Savannah isn’t all that big but it has about 10 high schools in the city. Macon has about 7 public and 8 private schools and its smaller than Savannah.

About time that Westlake retired Cam’s jersey !

I know the heralded Milton coach is no longer there but did all of his players leave too? How did they do this year?

@RaleighDawg When the coach left 4 of the “recruits” went with him….they had a little talent left, but the whole situation was just messed up over there. @Left Coast Dawg I would say Effingham County…They have one of the best players in the state in Jakeenan Gant…..he could dominate a game on a given night.

Can we get an update on how the Class A region tournaments are going besides just a list of scores? I wonder what would happen if football went almost a week without an article being written….armageddon?
