AJC.com to track 48 region tournaments this week

Region tournaments are underway this week, and AJC.com will be posting scores and updated schedules beginning today through Saturday in all 48 regions statewide.

If last year was any indication, it should be a wild ride.

Four teams that were No. 1 in the final 2012 regular-season rankings were beaten in their region tournaments. They were Fayette County and Jordan in the boys rankings and Douglas County and Wesleyan in the girls rankings. Wesleyan bounced back to win the Class A title.

The boys tournaments were exceptionally volatile in the highest two classes. Milton was the only No. 1 seed in the highest classification to win its region tournament in 2012. Milton went on to win Class AAAAA.

In AAAA, all regular-season champions that were ranked in the Top 10 were beaten in their region tournaments except eventual champion Miller Grove.

Region tournaments and not the regular season will determine the four playoff teams and their seeds for the state tournament except in Class A.

The lowest class adopted a points system ranking that will determine its 16 public and private school state qualifiers.

I’m definitely looking forward to the coverage and hopefully some of the lesser known players will get more exposure. Great job all season AJC!

The GHSA pretty much put GAPrepCountry out of business when they decided they wanted a “Power Ranking” and were too lazy to do it on their own. When they went to MaxPrep it was the end of GAPrep.

GAPrep is much better when it comes to searching schedules and the ability to find games on a specific date.

I.J. Rosenburg stated “The AJC.com will have everyone covered for you … Period!” Why then Mr. “I think I know everything about High School Sports in the state of Georgia” do you still not have all of the brackets up? I tried to find the 2AA bracket with no luck. Finally went to http://www.southeastgeorgiatoday.com to find it. Yeah, you guys “have everyone covered!”

I don’t see a schedule for Region 2-A. Are they holding a tournament or not? I guess with the new power rankings system for Class A, a tournament isn’t necessary.

Region 2-A isn’t having a region tournament, they have 3 girls and 2 boys teams in the top 16 in the power rankings. Region 1-A should have followed their lead because I think that region 1-A had 5 boys and 4 girls teams. Region 1 would have benefitted more from notg having a region tournament than region 2.

i wish next year GA schools could agree to use GA Prep Country or Max Preps, but not both. This year some girls teams use one and the boys teams the other. Also, the stats can and should be entered by every school so we can get some realistic stats out there for our kids. FL schools do a much better job I think of this. I guess each school has to designate someone to do it?
