Woodland-Cartersville girls pick up first victory of region tournament season

Here are some of the top stories involving Georgia’s Class AAAAA teams:

*Region tournaments begin: The first Class AAAAA region tournament got under way on Friday, with the Woodland-Cartersville girls escaping with a 34-32 victory over North Paulding in 5-AAAAA. Woodland advances to Saturday’s 6 p.m. game against New Manchester, with the winner advancing to a quarterfinal matchup with subregion A champion Paulding County. Here’s the schedule of the region’s games on Saturday:

Boys (At Rome)

East Paulding vs. South Paulding, 6 p.m.

Villa Rica vs. Rome, 7:30 p.m.

Girls (At East Paulding)

Woodland-Cartersville vs. New Manchester, 6 p.m.

East Paulding vs. South Paulding, 7:30 p.m.

*Postseason awards: Sprayberry’s Armel Potter and Pope’s Andrea Brown have been named players of the year in 7-AAAAA, the region announced this week. The boys’ all-region first team includes Solomon Ajose of Sequoyah, Grant Bryant of Kell, Jonathan Goodson of Riverwood, Walter Cole of North Springs and Andrew Mendel of Pope. The first-team girls are Neena Carter of Sprayberry, Meredith Tarver of Northview, Caliya Robinson of Kell, Emma Cook of Creekview and Zutorya Cook of Osborne. Coaches of the year were Roger Nolan of the Creekview girls and Jeremy Adams of the Sequoyah boys.
