Here are some of the top stories involving Georgia’s Class AAAAA teams:
*Miller Grove defends its turf: Four players scored in double figures as the top-ranked Miller Grove boys team wrapped up the regular-season title in Region 6-AAAAA Division B with a 64-49 victory over No. 2 Mays on Friday. Earl Bryant scored 15 points to lead Miller Grove, which will be aiming for its fifth consecutive state championship. Alterique Gilbert scored 13 points, James Walker had 12 points and eight rebounds, and Kyre’ Hamer finished with 11 points. Miller Grove (21-3) has won 10 consecutive games since a 69-58 loss to Westchester of Los Angeles in the MaxPreps Holiday Classic in December.
*Tough night for top 10: Mays was just one of five ranked teams to lose on Friday. No. 5 Lithia Springs suffered its first Region 5-AAAAA loss of the season, falling 63-59 to Douglas County rival New Manchester. No. 7 Sequoyah fell to 18-5 overall and 11-2 in 7-AAAAA with a 63-62 loss to North Springs. No. 8 McIntosh lost for the second time in four days, falling 63-60 against Whitewater. Tenth-ranked Bainbridge suffered its second region loss in five years when it was upset by Northside-Columbus 52-44.
*Perfect in region play: Three girls teams remained undefeated in region games after Friday’s games. No. 7 Flowery Branch improved to 14-0 in 8-AAAAA with a 72-56 victory against Gainesville. It was the Falcons’ third victory against their rival this season. Flowery Branch was scheduled to play No. 8 Cedar Shoals, the leader in the region’s other division, on Saturday. Top-ranked Tucker routed Clarkston 46-3 to stay perfect in 6-AAAAA, and Forest Park beat Union Grove 38-12 to improve to 14-0 in 4-AAAAA.
*Statistics leaders: Arabia Mountain’s Bakari Copeland and Columbia’s Miah Spencer are the leading scorers in DeKalb County, according to statistics released by the county this week. Copeland averages 22.4 points per game, just ahead of Columbia’s Tajh Shamsid-Deen (22.0) and Tucker’s Davonte Fitzgerald (20.8). Spencer averages 20.4 points, the only girl in the county with more than 20 per game. Rebounding leaders are Chamblee’s Jade McClendon (11.0) and Stone Mountain’s Shayla Brewton (10.9).
