Johnson wins Round 2 vs. Savannah

They’ve played twice and settled nothing. But Johnson and Savannah can both make a claim that it’s the best team in Class AAA.

In the second meeting of the season, Johnson prevailed 54-48 before 4,000 fans at the Savannah State University gym. That means the two squads are tied with one loss in Region 1. Should they finish that way, as expected, a coin flip would be used to determine first place and the site of the region tournament.

Johnson won this time thanks to the play of Tim Quarterman, who scored the game’s first points on an emphatic dunk and wound up with 23 points. Quarterman, who will play next season at LSU, missed the first meeting because of a suspension.

But the Atom Smashers (13-5) were not at full strength in this one, either. Saadiq Muhammad, considered Johnson’s second-best team, missed the game because of a suspension he was required to serve after being ejected from a game.

Savannah (15-3) was at full strength, as three players who had missed a …

Maxwell Ratings: 427 Georgia basketball teams ranked

Below are computer rankings of Georgia’s more than 400 boys high school basketball teams.

The ratings are compiled by Loren Maxwell, who provide the Maxwell Ratings each week during football season. This is his first release of basketball rankings.

AJC.com, MaxPreps and Georgia Prep County are the sources for all scores and schedules. No alterations are made to the data except to eliminate duplicate scores, so we encourage readers to double check and submit updates and corrections to those websites directly. Any changes will be subsequently reflected in the ratings. Games reported after 10 a.m. on Sunday are not included.

Rating can be used to estimate the strength of one team over another. For example, on a neutral floor, Tift County would be about a 4-point favorite over North Cobb. Also note that No. 4 Norcross and No. 5 Peachtree Ridge are rated dead even. The two play Friday in a Region 7-AAAAAA game.

SOS = strength of schedule.

Class AAAA: Tense race among 7A-AAAA boys

The Gilmer boys have the pretty overall record, but the Region 7-AAAA Division A race could get ugly down the stretch. The Bobcats (18-3, 3-1 in sub-region play), have games left against eveyrone in the sub-region. Their one sub-region loss was against Cass, whom they play Feb. 7. Before that, though, they face River Ridge (whom they beat 59-54 in the first meeting, and with whom the Bobcats are tied for first place in the sub-region) and Pickens (against whom the Bobcats also won 59-54 in the first meeting).

Two games separate the top four teams in the sub-region standings, though River Ridge, Cass and Pickens will all finish the regular season with losing records.

Top seed in sight: Mary Persons girls (16-2, 9-1) can clinch the top spot in 2-AAAA with wins this week over Howard and Baldwin, and as a bonus they can avenge one of their two losses by beating Howard, which took a 48-47 win over the Lady Bulldogs back on Dec. 14. They’ve also squared their other loss with a …

In the AAAAAA girls poll, Walton moved into the top spot after ending Lassiter’s reign at the Cobb County championships. No. 3 Lassiter finished second to move past Kennesaw Mountain, who finished third at the Cobb County meet despite missing one of the team’s best swimmers. Brookwood fell to No. 2 after finishing behind No. 5 Mill Creek at the Gwinnett County championships.

Girls basketball rankings: Tucker returns to No. 1 in Class AAAAA

Tucker reclaimed the No. 1 spot in the Class AAAAA girls basketball rankings this week after knocking off previous No. 1 Stephenson 46-45 in a Region 6-AAAAA game on Tuesday.

It was Tucker’s second victory of the season against Stephenson, which fell to No. 2. Tucker was ranked No. 1 earlier this season before losing consecutive games against Miller Grove and Westlake in the Peach State Classic during the first week of January. Fellow Region 6 team Miller Grove remains No. 3.

The other five No. 1 teams – North Gwinnett in AAAAAA, Columbia in AAAA, Buford in AAA, Wesleyan in AA and Southwest Atlanta Christian in A – held their positions for another week, despite losses by two of them.

North Gwinnett lost 46-29 on Tuesday to Norcross, which moved up from No. 3 to No. 2. North Gwinnett and Norcross split two regular-season meetings, but North Gwinnett has fared a bit better than Norcross against an equally challenging schedule. That was enough to keep the top spot.
