Columbia also beat No. 7 Grady 70-53 on Tuesday. See the Gainesville Times story on that one. East Hall travels to No. 10 Dawson County on Monday in a game postponed from Friday because of weather. … No. 9 Washington County had a nice win Tuesday over Northside-Warner Robins, which probably would’ve cracked the AAAAA Top 10 had it not lost. The computer Maxwell Ratings rank Waco No. 2 and Thomson No. 5 in all of AAA. Buford is No. 1. Maxwell claims that Waco’s average opponent is 19 points better than Cartersville’s.

In response to MaxPrep about Cartersville. I feel that they are penalizing Cartersville for MaxPrep’s mistake last week. MaxPrep had Cartersville loosing to Ringgold by mistake and dropped the Canes over 20 places in the state ranking and over 300 places in the national poll. They dropped to 10th in the AAA ranking. They are still below where they were two weeks ago.

George – I’ll check that out. Be aware that the rankings that I referenced weren’t MaxPreps’, but the Maxwell Ratings, done by Loren Maxwell. I’ll check to see if Loren has the correct scores. On Tuesday, I’ll publish Loren’s rankings. They’re interesting.

Six classifications has watered down the state rankings. Back when there were only four you had true state champions, not this watered down version. If Manchester in AA is better than GAC which destroyed MLK Saturday, then they must be really good.

Is there a team in Allatoona’s sub region that has a winning record (nice to pad the record with 10 wins against five poor schools ? On first thought, only Lithia and South Paulding come to mind as only other teams in the entire region with winning records. #3 ranked school, don’t think so.

Yep, Friday for those games. Thanks for the fix. It’s corrected.

re: GAC – I’d probably pick GAC to win Class AA at this point, but Manchester beat GAC in the semis last season. So Manchester got the early #1 ranking based on that and hasn’t lost since.

Allatoona has beaten everyone on both sides of the region including the top 10 ranked Lithia Springs. That includes all the other teams on the other side who all have winning records. We’ve also played 4 top 10 schools. Lost in OT to Glenn Hills, lost twice in touch matchups with Hilgrove, beat Bishop Verot outta Florida who has a high major D-I center. Played toe to toe with Riverview out of Florida and led for a majority of the game and they were an Elite 8 team last year though I don’t know if they’re currently ranked.

All we can do is beat who they put in front of us and we’ve done that 17 times. More than what most people can say.

Unless you’ve seen Allatoona play, I don’t know how you’re qualified to say the bucs aren’t a pretty good team. Recent history would suggest we find ways to be successful during the regular season and post season.

Mr. Spider…keep dreaming (or should I say, keep having nightmares of Marist winning!)

We do not need to spend money in that matter…after so many years of success, the good athletes (and students, by the way) just keep knocking on our door. Some get in and many do not. However, the ones that did not get into Marist, for whatever reason, most have done very nicely with other schools, public and private. With great success in the classroom and on the field, Marist has always had a very long list of worthy applicants however, only so many spots can be filled. Sure hope that your son or daughter does well wherever they end up :)

Envy is one of the seven cardinal sins and you should really try to avoid it…

”Tift County back at #1? I don’t see it.”

It’s hard to settle on any team at No. 1 because there’s so much balance and depth this season. I don’t think there’s a team this season close to some of the Milton/Norcross/Wheeler c’ship teams of recent years. I don’t think it’s a down year, just a year where the talent is spread around.

Columbia #1.?? Any knowledgeable , unbiased fan who saw the game against Marist would have to say on the day Marist was clearly the better team and should have won by a dozen points or more, they were up by 13 in the 4th. But you have to give it to Columbia, with a lot of luck, a bad call or two, 3 missed front ends of one and one’s and bad decision making by Marist, Columbia did win the game.

I guess I was right about W.D. contending for the state title this year. lol
We’re now #2 in the state, and have the best record in A ball with Excel. Also we haven’t lost to A school. We beat the grown men from Greenforrest. It’s a shame GHSA isn’t doing anything about grown men coming in as freshman and playing. I know what 15 and 16 year old boys look like. These boys(men) have a developed game, and they’re stronger than any of the boys in Class basketball. Plus they haven’t grown 1 inch since they’ve arrived at Greenforrest. Wonder where all the Greenforrest fans are at, maybe since none of their kids play on the team they’re not showing up to support the team.

We’re working very hard at W.D. our team is home grown. No All-Star AAU players put together on one high school team. It goes to show if you put in hard days work you can win. Everyone now wants to win the easy way. We have schools like Holy Innocents trying to get some of our 8th grade players now offering them scholarship to attend their school next year.

@WDFAN: WD is really good this year…that Greenforest win was a great win. I really wish GHSA would look into Greenforest like they do all the other private schools. With less than 100 students in their entire high school there is just NO WAY that they can have so many guys that big. There are seems to be certain types of schools that the GHSA never look into…That being said, WD is not the only Class A team that hasnt lost to another Class A team. North Cobb Christian and Athens Christian are both in that category. ACS lost to AAAA Glenn Hills (#2) by 4 the other night and they were without the possible Class A player of the year Will Jackson (averaging 30 a game)

Portion of an Article about David Jones and Greenforest: My thoughts in parenthesis….
What many people didn’t realize is that they had one of the state’s best kept secrets practicing with the team all last year in 6′9 post player Tosin Mehinti (in other words…inelligable last year) who has signed with UAB. Mehinti is a presence inside that few players can match up with at any class, let alone the single A level. Jones feels the overall team is very strong. “I think I have the deepest team I’ve had in a long time. About eight to nine deep. (an entire AAU team’s worth) He says, “In addition to returners, Faisal Abdulamlik and Justin Ravenel, both sophomores who started as freshmen, Greenforest has added (recruited) a few more impact players. Point guard Rashad Swain transferred (was recruited) in from East Coweta HS. Mmony Celestine, one of SEVERAL African move-ins (recruits not paying tuition) on the team, will provide depth at the wing.

From GHSA bylaws: “To be eligible to participate in interscholastic activities, a student must not have reached his 19th birthday prior to May 1st, preceding his year of participation.”

If they turned 19 after April 30 2012 they can play. Not much would surprise me but to break this rule would be really dumb of any school. The GHSA would come down very hard on a school if they discovered this type of violation.

@Wdfan – Just love on your team, sir. Don’t worry about throwing trash at other teams. If Greenforrest is cheating and you beat them than that says more about your team than anything else.

However, I have to disagree. I realize that rankings are meaningless and are only there so that fans can argue about them (except these awful new power rankings), but no ranking system ever conceived by any member of the media looks solely at the record of the teams. I don’t think anyone who has seen NCCS play would drop them for losing to Hillgrove (top 10 AAAAAA) and a top10 overall team from South Carolina (according to Maxpreps). Both games were within 5. WD also lost to Hillgrove by almost 20. Both teams played Jackson but NCCS won by 40 and WD won by 4. That might have something to do with the (ultimately useless) rankings.

In the end NCCS and ACS and WD would trade there top 10 rankings for cutting down the nets in Macon on March 7th. I can’t wait to see how it plays out.

Power rankings does not determine if you play at home or on the road. You could be 5-5 in your region, but if you are in first place of your region you get the first seed in the region and if you win out you get to play at home.

Power rankings does not determine if you play at home. You could be 5-5 in the region and if it’s the best record you get the no. 1 seed during the region tournament. The top 2 winners get to host a state game at home. So power rankings mean nothing if you lose in your regional tournament, lose round one and you will end up on the road.

@rmbuck: thats not true. Only the region tourney champs get ranked before everyone else. How you did in your region during the year is irrelevant. And in the private school division only 5 private schools have a legitimate shot at winning their region. So that means teams ranked #6, #7, and #8 will all be teams that DID NOT win their region tourney, but they WILL get to play at home the first game because they will be the higher seed
