Hot play thaws

Icy weather kept many basketball games from playing late this week, but here are highlights from those who did:

Auburn signee Katie Frerking, whose 20-point average is the Wesleyan girls’ only in double figures, bucketed 18 in the No. 1-ranked Wolves’ 51-31 Region 6-AA shellacking of Lovett, the defending Class AA champion ranked until this week. Up a class after four consecutive Class A championships and five total, the Wolves (17-4, 5-0) now have beaten the previously ranked Lions twice and No. 4 Greater Atlanta Christian once, both in region… Said Taylor’s and Mario Beck’s 21 helped Bleckley County to its highest scoring first quarter this season, a 34-15 lead that became an 88-61 win over Crawford County in 4-AA… GAC’s girls arrested their three-game losing streak, their longest in more than nine seasons, by trouncing Hapeville Charter 58-20. Cici Buford scored 14, Sydney Means 10 and Brianna Cummings 13 for the Spartans’ third-widest margin of victory… No. 8 Dublin of 3-AA ran its win streak to four, thanks to Quiondra Darrisaw’s 16 points and Jasmine Hollis’ 13 in a 65-33 win over Swainsboro… Melissa Jennings netted a season-high 26, including 16 in the second half, to help McIntosh County Academy’s girls win an eighth straight, beating Vidalia for the second time in three tries, 60-55, in 2-AA.
