Girls basketball: Wesleyan tops Buford

By Stephen Black

Score Atlanta

In a battle of top-ranked teams, Wesleyan held off host Buford 44-40 for its second win over the Wolves this season.

Wesleyan, ranked No. 1 in Class AA, never trailed in the second half despite its largest lead being just five. Coach Jan Azar’s squad outrebounded Buford, No. 1 in Class AAA, 30-14 and held Georgia Tech-signee Kaela Davis to just nine points.

Wesleyan enjoyed a 4-point lead at the half after a 3-pointer in the closing seconds by sophomore guard Lauren Frerking. Lauren’s sister Katie, an Auburn signee, led Wesleyan with 15 points, six rebounds and five steals. Junior guard Landyn Duley added eight for Wesleyan.

Junior center Bree Horrocks led Buford with 10 points while senior forward MacKenzie Darrah had eight.

Wesleyan won the earlier meeting between the two Gwinnett County schools 59-53 on Dec. 29.

That argument is soooooo old and tired. It is what it is.SACA team beat them both and GACA. At the end of the day players play.

What both teams are happiest about is that they aren’t in the same division: AAA and AA.

I don’t care who’s on the squad. If a kid get a schlorship to play at Wesleyan, then sobeit! As far as Buford goes the deal is simple, transportation and tution is all it takes if you live out of the area. If that is a personal choice fsmilies are willing to make then who are we to judge. Get over it and get used to it! IT WHAT IT IS!!!!!

Davis had 11 rebounds, Darrah had 5 rebounds, Dillard had 7 rebounds for Buford…. nor real sure about the others Buford players but off the top of my head it’s the other way around.

teamwork wins championships……………….they are no ‘me’ or “I” in team…. both teams very sluggish…could be good defense but Wesleyan wanted it more and the team played harder than the
crew that showed up… looked worse than the Lovett game last year……need to come together and play as a team

Wesleyan did two things last night that go a long way: 1) they held Buford to one shot a possession with few exceptions 2) Wesleyan is the only team that has been able to shut down Koko every game. If you don’t stop Koko you can’t beat Buford.

Swish is confusing shutdown with sat down. On the real point of victory? Wesleyan won on teamwork alone, something Buford hasn’t had for the past 3 years. Wow! visiting college coach got a real eyeful, huh?

if they were smart , they would have left with their Scholarship offer still in their back pocket….not a team player…….spoiled rotten.
