Class AAAA blog: Potential tournament sleepers

The Class AAAA rankings continue to be Columbia’s world, with both the Eagles and the Lady Eagles nested at the top. And little has changed in the boys and girls rankings in recent weeks.

Still, there are a handful of unranked teams that could make some noise come tournament time. As a nod to the commenter who brought up Johnson-Gainesville earlier this week, here’s a look at possible tournament sleepers:

Mary Persons: The Lady Bulldogs are 13-3 and beat Perry Tuesday night and are tied atop the 2-AAAA standings. Two of their three losses are by two points or less, though an ugly 48-27 loss to Westside-Macon is cause to wonder if they can stay with the state’s elite.

Region 5: Fayette County, Carrollton and Sandy Creek are all ranked from this region. LaGrange and Columbus could be too. One player could make a huge difference in a tournament scenario, and Columbus’ Alexia Manning (18.6 ppg) is a difference maker.

Dalton: The Lady Catamounts lost to Heritage Tuesday night to end an eight-game winning streak, but Dalton is 17-5 and just two years removed from a state championship game appearance.

Johnson-Gainesville: The aforementioned Knights are having their way in Region 8, and their four losses are by a combined 12 points. With both Montrell McKenzie and Ty Cockfield both averaging above 15 points and two other players averaging in double figures, they have enough balance to cause some real defensive headaches.

Albany: The Indians are 11-7 and five of their losses are by 10 points or less. With just one senior on the roster, they may be a year away, but they’ve played enough close games that they could pull a surprise come tournament time.

Shaw: With Cedarius Brantley averaging 17.5 points, the Raiders have a legitimate scoring threat, and their record (12-5) could be the most deceiving mark in AAAA. Those five losses are by a combined 13 points.

Cross Creek girls are 20-0 , South Effingham is 20-0, and Woodland is 19-1..How is Columbia still the #1 team in AAAA? Thats crazy!!! All three of those teams should be the favorites for the AAAA title and should be ranked higher than Columbia!!! Give the real champs some respect!
