AAAAAA basketball blog: Tift County just misses upset vs. New Jersey power on 78-game win steak

Some of Georgia’s best boys teams will find out how they stack up nationally this week.

It started Monday, when Tift County put a scare into  St. Anthony of New Jersey, which won its 78th straight game with a 60-54 victory in Springfield, Mass. St. Anthony is ranked No. 7 nationally by USA Today.

Tift, which dropped to No. 4 from No. 1 in Georgia’s AAAAAA rankings this week after a region loss to Coffee, led St. Anthony 49-44 early in the fourth quarter, but St. Anthony took the lead for good on a 3-point shot with 1:20 left.

Point guard Tadric Johnson scored 13 points and had nine assists. He made only two turnovers, but they came in the final minutes. Donell Tuff scored 17 points, and Brannen Greene, the Kansas signee, had 14 for Tift.

Here are a couple of articles on the game –

As we noted in the rankings this week, three Top 10 boys teams are playing Saturday at Norcross in the Hilton Invitational.

No. 1 North Cobb plays Carver of Montgomery, the No. 1 team overall in Alabama, according to MaxPreps.

No. 3 Wheeler plays Christ School (MaxPreps’ No. 25 team in North Carolina), and No. 6 Norcross goes against DeMatha (No. 3 in Maryland).

Meanwhile, No. 2 Shiloh is playing at the Monteverde Academy Invitational, a three-day tournament, beginning Thursday and opens with Orlando Christian Prep, the 27th-ranked team overall in Florida per MaxPreps.

With all the cutbacks in school funding, did Tift Co have to pay to go play in Springfield? If so, don’t see how it can be justified. Believe they also went to Florida to play.

@Smug; the Hoophall Classic tournament pays all expenses for that trip to Springfield, and the City of Palms covers most of the expenses in Florida. Christ School is very much down this year having lost 6 games and even losing at home this year for the first time in about 8 years. Overall, high schools in Georgia on the boys side have been disappointing nationally. The games at Norcross should be very interesting match-ups. Originally, Milton was scheduled to play at Montverde, but after the county debacle, Montverde, after getting Milton’s best returning player, Jalyn Patterson, cancelled their invitation and invited Shiloh with their 7 footer from Alabama, their guard from Columbia HS, and a wing from a prep school in New England.

I am not hating, but all the grief Tift County gets for recruiting, which is not happening, i look at Shiloh and they have a 7 footer from Alabama, a point guard from Columbus HS, and a wing player from a prep school in New England. Where is all the hoopla about that?

Wow… Old school comments. It is amazing that academic budgets have been cut to the bone, but these teams seem to find a way to go on these trips. But, that has always been the case with big-time athletics.
