Here’s a recap of some of the action involving Georgia’s Class AAAAA teams:
*Top 10 upset: The Gainesville boys team pulled off the biggest surprise of the week when it knocked off seventh-ranked Clarke Central on Friday. It was just the second Region 8-AAAAA victory in eight tries for Gainesville, which has won five of seven games overall since a 1-6 start. Deiuntre Cox scored 28 points and Cameron Johnson had 11 to lead Clarke Central (12-3), which won the first meeting with Gainesville 64-55 on Nov. 27. Chase England and Luke Moore scored 12 points each for the Red Elephants.
*Raiders rebound: The sixth-ranked Mays boys team bounced back from a loss on Tuesday to beat fourth-ranked Tucker 45-42 in the only Class AAAAA matchup of top 10 teams on Friday. Mays, which lost to Lakeside 80-78 this week, is trying to keep pace with top-ranked Miller Grove in the Region 6-AAAAA Division B race. Tucker remains the subregion leader in Division A, but the Tigers have a slim lead over Stephenson. Tucker lost to Stephenson on Dec. 1 and will face the rematch at Tucker on Jan. 22.
*On a roll: The Forest Park girls team may have been a bit overlooked after starting the season a mediocre 7-6, but the Panthers appear to be hitting their stride. Forest Park won its third consecutive game on Friday, crushing Mount Zion-Jonesboro 53-17. That comes on the heels of a 57-9 victory over Ola on Tuesday. The Panthers also welcomed Kayla Potts back to the lineup this week. Potts, the team’s second-leading scorer as a freshman, has spent the past year recovering from an ACL injury.
*On the schedule: The third-ranked Effingham County boys team will travel to Florida Saturday to face North Florida Institute, which is 16-3 and ranked No. 1 in Florida’s Class 2A. Richmond Hill is 13-2, with losses to Statesboro and Gaffney, S.C. … On the girls’ side, third-ranked Kell will travel across Cobb County on Saturday to face Class AAAAAA No. 3 North Cobb. Both teams have suffered losses this week – Kell on Tuesday against Osborne and North Cobb on Friday at McEachern.
