Second-ranked Redan made easy work of Region 6A-AAAA rival Chamblee with a 60-42 home win Tuesday night. The Lady Raiders, now 11-0, remained undefeated ahead of a visit to No. 1 Columbia on Friday.
Redan never trailed after falling behind 4-3 inside the first two minutes. The Lady Raiders stormed ahead with full-court pressure and six consecutive points from junior forward Brea Elmore, including a breakaway layup where she was intentionally fouled. It was part of a 12-0 run that put the Redan up 15-4 late in the first quarter. Along with a 10-second call and a backcourt violation, Elmore and fellow junior Jamese Abney forced three Lady Bulldogs miscues during the spurt.
“We came out to set the tempo and play our style of basketball,” Redan head coach Jerry Jackson said. “I was prepared to drop back into a zone if they started to hit shots, but we were able to keep the pressure on and force turnovers.”
Redan extended a 15-point halftime lead to to 38-18 in the third quarter behind Elmore’s third three-point make of the night. She finished with 14 points, four assists, a steal and a block. Abney led Redan with 19 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Jada Byrd, another junior, added 10 points and five rebounds.
“They’re seasoned. They’ve played a lot of basketball,” Jackson said. “That’s what I expect of them.”
Redan played without guard Destini McClary, who Jackson expects to suit up on Friday after missing the last two games. Chamblee, led by 23 points from Candace Rhodes, has lost three straight after starting 9-0.
