Funeral is Thursday for Wayne County player hit by train

Funeral services for Wayne County basketball standout Shaquille Morgan will be held in Jesup on Thursday, five days after the senior point guard was struck and killed by a train.

Morgan, a former all-region player according to his Facebook page, was walking on railroad tracks just beyond an overpass on Georgia Highway 84 on Saturday when the accident occurred, according to the Jacksonville Daily News. Morgan was pronounced dead at the scene.

Morgan is the son of Lt. Perry Morgan, a detective with the Jesup Police Department, the newspaper reported.

Wayne County’s boys and girls games Saturday against Coffee were canceled. Wayne County students will return to school from holiday break on Wednesday. Wayne County is scheduled to play at Statesboro on Friday.

Wayne County is 11-0, one of only four undefeated boys teams in the state.

An awful situation. Feel badly for the locomotive driver, who apparently tried to do everything he could to stop the train or warn the young man.
In a non sequitur, you do realize the paper’s name is the Florida Times-Union, not the Jacksonville Daily News?
