Central Carroll winning with defense

When it comes to defense, the Central Carroll girls know what it takes. The Lions won their third straight game, a 51-24 victory over Haralson County on Friday. During that stretch Central has not allowed more than 29 points.

Sherae Bonner scored 17 for Central (8-4, 1-0 Region 4) and Wesli Simmons added 10.

The Lions (8-4) have been defensive-minded all year. In their last six wins the opposition has not scored more than 39. Central’s only losses have been to Class AAAAA Villa Rica and AA power Bremen.

Sonoraville girls improve to 13-1

Sonoraville won its fourth straight, a 59-41 victory over North Murray, and improved its record to a school-best 13-1. Carrie Cheeks scored 23 points as Sonoraville remained unbeaten in Region 5-AAA. The Phoenix have won their games by an average of 21.6 points. Their only loss came to crosstown rival Calhoun.

Southwest girls tested by Central

The Southwest Macon girls survived a scare from rival Central Macon, breaking things open in the second half for a 56-38 win. Southwest (9-2) found itself leading by only three points entering the second half, but didn’t allow Central to score from the floor until 20 seconds were left in the third quarter. Shakenya Peters led Southwest with 19 points and Ny’Asia Holmes scored 16, including a big 3-pointer in the third-quarter run.

Buford sweeps Fannin County

The Buford (8-3, 4-0 Region 7-AAA) girls both came home from chilly Blue Ridge with a 63-20 win over Fannin County on Friday. Kaela Davis scored 21 points to lead nine players who scored.

Jones scores 34 for Callaway

Nehemiah Jones scored 34 points, including a 3-pointer at the buzzer, to lead Callaway to a 69-68 win over Rockmart. The Cavs trailed by two with 10 seconds left, rebounded a missed free throw and raced down the court to set up the winning shot. Tyrell Tigner added 14 for Callaway.

Region 1 blowouts

LSU signee Tim Quarterman scored 28 points to lead Johnson in a 100-30 win over Pierce County in a Region 1 game. Saadiq Muhammad added 16 and Ramone Roberson scored 11 for Johnson, now 7-4. Darius Foreman scored 10 for Pierce County.

Brantley County whipped Islands 68-46 behind the 21-point effort of Colt Yawn. Brantley (7-4) also got 17 from Derrick Bradshaw and 11 from Zach Edwards.
