Up the road Friday night in Rome, there’s a basketball game perhaps worth the drive.
Model’s boys (7-4, 2-1) take on Pepperell (4-5, 1-1) in a rematch of their Rome News-Tribune Christmas Tournament game the Blue Devils won 60-53 two weeks ago. This 8:30 showdown could be another barn burner and boost the winner in the hunt behind region leader Dade County (9-1, 2-0).
Last time, Pepperell’s Darius Fugh scored 22 points and Kyle Henderson 11, but it was too little to stop Model, which got 23 from V.J. Saxton, 14 from Davey Fisher and 10 from Nakia Watkins. Model led by one after a quarter, by five at halftime and 10 after three, but Devils coach Jacob Travis would like not to need another four foul shots in the late moments to pull out the win.
“It was a one-possession game with just a couple minutes left,” he recalled. “(Pepperell) didn’t go away that night at all.”
Here are some other boys games to keep an eye on Friday:
– Greene County at Union County: The unbeaten Panthers (9-0) put their 60-point average on the line against the Tigers (6-6) in both teams’ Region 8-AA opener.
– Manchester at Harris County: The Blue Devils come in having not only won three straight, but averaging 17 points a game more than the host Tigers. The Devils have taken the teams’ last six meetings.
– Bleckley County at Macon County: Winners of six straight, the Royals (9-2, 2-0) are coming off a 42-40 win over Hancock Central in the Antebellum Classic tournament, when Mario Beck scored 15 and was tournament MVP, according to the Bleckley Progress.
– Jeff Davis at Vidalia: The Indians’ 10-0 start was dashed last week by Dodge County, but they’ve won the last five games against their Region 2-AA counterparts.
