The Leaderboard: Watson, Chubb, Howard hit milestones

Deshaun Watson of Gainesville became the third player in state history to pass for 4,000 yards in a season, joining Lassiter’s Hutson Mason (4,560 in 2009) and Collins Hill’s Taylor Heinicke (4,218 in 2010).

Nick Chubb of Cedartown set a record for rushing yards in a regular season and became the seventh player to surpass 2,700 yards rushing in a season. The record for a season is 3,172 set by Daccus Turman of Washington-Wilkes in 2000.

Jonathan Howard of Wilcox County finished fourth all-time in receiving yards for a season with 1,630. That fell only 25 yards short of the state record set by Demarco Robinson of M.L. King in 2010.

Here are season yardage leaders in passing, rushing and receiving. Games played by the player’s team are in parentheses.

Boys basketball: Friday holiday tournament roundup

Columbia 69, Miller Grove 58: In a battle of defending champions, Columbia jumped out to a 16-13 lead after the first quarter before cruising to a road win at Miller Grove. Columbia led 34-22 at halftime and took a 45-34 lead to the fourth quarter. Tahj Shamsid-Deen finished with 31 points and 10 assists while Jordan Anderson notched 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Cross Creek 59, Meadowcreek 56: Cross Creek trailed 26-23 at halftime but quickly jumped up 31-26 in the third before carrying a 53-51 into the fourth. Vincent Moore led Cross Creek with 14 points while Meadowcreek’s Joshua Moore and Terrance Snelling each tossed in 14. Cross Creek’s DeSlaun Scott andTreaire Moore each tallied double-digit points.

Girls basketball: Friday holiday tournament roundup

Buford 57, Banks County 18: The host Buford Wolves raced past Banks County 57-18 as Kaela Davis poured in 22 points. Buford led 9-0 after the first quarter and 29-4 at halftime. The Wolves exploded for 14 in the third quarter before cruising to the win. Davis was the only scorer in double digits.

Carrollton Christmas Tournament

Greater Atlanta Christian 62, Chapel Hill 47: Greater Atlanta Christian knocked off Chapel Hill in the Carrollton Christmas Tournament behind a huge effort from Brianna Cummings. Cummings netted 22 points to go with 12 apiece from Cosette Mahre and Jasmine Hill.

Jones County Christmas Tournament

Washington County 73, Salem 69: Washington County advanced to the finals with a victory over Salem. Shon Kitchens led Washington County with 29 points while Nia Johnson chipped in 18 points. Tiera Murray contributed 13 points.

Girls basketball: Holiday tournament roundup

Laney 62, Butler 15: Laney jumped out to 14-0, 24-2 and 32-6 leads before buckling down after halftime by shutting down Butler and holding the Bulldogs to just four second-half points. Khadija Cave led Laney with 18 points and Simone Smith netted 14 points.

Jones County Christmas Tournament

First Presbyterian Day 46, Central-Macon 45: Hannah Davis canned a free throw with five seconds left to help First Presbyterian Day pull out a victory in the Jones County Christmas Tournament. Central-Macon trailed 26-24 at halftime but rallied back.

Washington County 65, Dublin 51: In the first game of the Jones County Christmas Tournament, Washington County jumped out to a 24-11 lead after the first quarter and never trailed en route to the victory. Boys basketball: Holiday tournament roundup

Dawson County 44, West Forsyth 29: Dawson County improved to 10-0 on the season after beating West Forsyth at home. Tyler Dominy scored 13 points and grabbed career rebound No. 500 in the victory. Nick Staiti scored 13 for West Forsyth in the losing effort.

Chick-fil-A Classic

Wheeler 42, Christ School (N.C.) 41: Junior Elijah Staley finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds while fellow junior Avery Patterson paced the Wildcats with 16 to pick a big victory in the Chick-fil-A Classic held in Columbia, S. C. Staley clinched the game with a late free throw as Christ School was rallying from a 23-19 halftime deficit.

Erskine Holiday Classic

Westside-Augusta 86, Dixie 15: Frank Booker poured in 29 points, including four 3-pointers as Westside-Augusta dominated Dixie from the very start. Westside jumped out to a 31-6 lead and was on top 44-13 at halftime. In the second half, Dixie managed just two points.

Thomas O’Leary of St. Pius made a 47-yard field goal and Buford’s Matthew Bonadies kicked a 43-yarder in this year’s Class AAA championship game. They are two of the 11 longest field goals in finals history. Taylor Lamb’s 75-yard touchdown pass to Tydus Curtis in Calhoun’s loss to Jefferson was the eighth-longest touchdown pass in a championship game. Wednesday boys basketball roundup

Carrollton Tournament

Greater Atlanta Christian 72, Lithia Springs 60: In the opening game of the Carrollton Tournament, Greater Atlanta Christian led by seven heading into the second half and held Lithia Springs to just 10 third-quarter points while opening a 57-44 lead at the end of the period. Senior guard Collin Swinton led GAC with 20 while Isaiah Wilkins had 18 and Troy Morrison scored 15. Swinton had nine in the third quarter. Lithia Springs was led by Neil Phillips’ 27 points.

City of Palms Tournament

Tift County 81, Eagle’s Landing 72: Brannen Greene led Tift County with 26 points as Tift County edged Eagle’s Landing in the City of Palms tournament in Ft. Myers, Fla. A 9-2 run to end the game spurred the Blue Devils to the victory. Greene scored seven of those points. Trevin Joseph had 22 for Eagle’s Landing and Chris Davenport scored 11. Senior power forward Desmond Ringer grabbed 11 rebounds for the Golden Eagles.

Wednesday girls basketball roundup

Norcross 57, Peachtree Ridge 32: Norcross’ Diamond DeShields led all scorers with 30 points and Shayla Cooper added 14 for the visiting Blue Devils. Norcross led 25-3 at the end of the firt quarter and 34-11 at half-time of a game that was never in question. Senior Melissa Turvy led Peachtree Ridge with 19 points, 18 coming on six made 3-pointers.

Northview 61, Johns Creek 54: Visitng Northview led 21-2 after one quarter and 37-16 at halftime, but Johns Creek pulled to within two at 52-50 at the 3-minute mark. Guard Connie Estevez had 17 points in the first half and guard Meredith Tarver scored 14 total for Northview. Tarver’s layup after a Johns Creek miss stretched the lead to 54-50, then she sank six of six free throws down the stretch to help put the game away for Northview.
