Girls basketball: Thursday holiday roundup

Campbell HS Christmas Tournament

Hillgrove 64, Langston Hughes 52: Visiting Hillgrove got off to a slow start but still matched the Panthers point for point to even it up at 25 at intermission. Aleigha Cass helped get the Hawks rolling in the second half and scored a game high 22 points with teammate Mackenzie Engram adding 20. Cass and Engram patrolled and dominated the paint and have the 10-1 Hawks on their way to a dandy with a 10-1 Kell squad.

Naples Holiday Tournament (Naples, FL)

North Gwinnett 79, First Baptist Academy, Naples, FL 28: First Baptist Academy was no match for the visiting 9-0 North Gwinnett Bulldogs and their superstar guard Lexi Brown. The senior had a game high 27 points and added 10 assists, 9 steals and 8 rebounds to the stat sheet. Teammate Peyton Whitted scored 17 in the Bulldogs first round route.

Battle of the States (Towns County)

Dawson County 50, Piedmont, AL 44: Visiting Dawson County trailed 35-25 at halftime, but a sharp Dawson County squad hit the hardwood in the second half and an offensive surge quickly changed the game as they charged to 20-0 run to start the 3rd quarter. Gunnar Armstrong led Dawson County with 12 points and the flood of Tiger points erased a double-digit deficit and moved them to a perfect 11-0 on the season.

Down South Classic (Brookwood HS)

Brookwood 93 East Coweta 59: Host Brookwood went into halftime with a 48-36 lead. The Broncos continued their scoring outburst and dominated the second half feeding Kendall Joseph and Khalil Abdullah who had the hot hand. Abdullah had a team high 18 points and Joseph had 17.

Wheeler 71, Spring Valley (S.C.) 50: The Wildcats broke open what was a 7-point game at the half and waltzed to an easy win in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Juniors Trevin Steede and Avery Patterson led the Wildcats with 17 points each while sophomore Daniel Giddens had 12 and senior Austin Smoak had 10.

North Gwinnett 67, Marist (Ill.) 42: Senior point guard Lexie Brown scored 22 points and had seven assists to lead the Bulldogs to a first-round win over Marist (Ill.). Coach Bryan Sellers’ squad led 16-8 at the end of the first quarter, but a dominant run in the second period led to a 25-point lead prior to the half. Also for the Bulldogs, senior forward Peyton Whitted had 14 points and 14 rebounds, junior shooting guard Joshlyn Belcher had 12 points and junior post Stephanie Amechia scored 10 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.

Jeff Haws’ Top 10 List

So, with another high school football season safely in the books, we’ll admit a bit of depression begins to set in at The List HQ.

As exciting as finals weekend at the Georgia Dome is, it’s always a little bittersweet knowing those are the last games we’ll see for another year.

Fortunately, there is one cure for this post-football depression – high school basketball.

While we’ve been obsessing over football like the rest of you, basketball season is nearly two months old already, and attention turns fully to roundball in the new year.

As much as we love our pigskin, in many ways basketball is even better for the fans. And, of course, we’ve got a list of the top 10 reasons why.

10. No bands

OK, hear us out here. Yeah, we do love the sounds of a great high school band. But, especially for those who don’t, it can be great to just be able to concentrate on the sounds of the game without all the fight songs and such. If you love bands, we’ll now accept your hate mail.

HS swimming poll: Parkview maintains top spots

Most teams will break for the holidays and resume meet schedules in 2013, but several ranked squads faced off just before the Christmas break. The Parkview boys maintained the No. 1 spot in Class AAAAAA after beating No. 9 Johns Creek. The loss dropped Johns Creek down one spot. The Parkview girls also prevailed and stayed in the No. 1 spot. The Mill Creek girls moved up to No. 6 after knocking off Peachtree Ridge in a recent meet. Peachtree Ridge fell to No. 7.

HS wrestling poll: Bremen, Banks County move up

North Gwinnett placed fourth in the prestigious Maynard Duals, one of the nation’s top wrestling meets as five time defending state champion Collins Hill finished fifth. With the win, North Gwinnett moved up to No. 4 while Collins Hill stayed at No. 2 after going 4-1. Class AA No. 2 Bremen, up from No. 4 last week, beat both Collins Hill and North Gwinnett in the event. GAC moved up in the AA poll to No. 3 after sweeping Rockmart and Johns Creek. Banks County moved up to No. 7 in the Class AAA poll while Mount Zion-Carroll entered the Class A poll at No. 6.

Girls basketball: Friday holiday tournament roundup

Chuck Miller Classic

Campbell 66- Mt. Zion Jonesboro 44 : In this 3rd place game Campbell held a 28-18 lead to start the second half. Julie McKie continued her strong tournament run and finished the game with 14 points to bring her point total to 51 total in the past 3 games. McKie was named tournament MVP and teammate D’Asia Cain was a force as well with her big 12 point 10 rebound game.

Chapel Hill 75 Riverdale 41: Visiting Chapel Hill came out sharp to start the game taking a 33 to 8 lead after the 1st quarter. Kaneisha Mixon scored 22 points and Earnicia Washington chimed in with 12 points. Teammate Ashley Chestnut filled the stat sheet too with her 10 points four steals and four assists.

North Cobb 44 St. Francis 42: Red hot North Cobb wins the Collegiate Prep Shootout and remains a perfect 11-0. Amber Reeves was named the tournament MVP and teammate Briah Woods also received honors by being named to the tourney team.

Boys basketball: Saturday holiday tournament roundup

Pope 82 Harrison 65: Andrew Mendel scored 26 points in host Pope’s win. Teammate Chase Hutchins added 14 into the Greyhounds’ scoring outburst that helped them open up their 34-24 half time lead.

Whitfield Academy 56 B.E.S.T. Academy 22: Host Whitfield Academy led 28-12 at the half and stayed hot until the final buzzer in part to big games out of Brendon Myles and Braelen Phillips. Myles led all scorers with 18 points and Phillips  got the double double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Newton 58 Jenkins 55: Visiting Newton improved to 8-2 on the season edging out the win in a team effort.  Four Ram players scored in double figures. Leading the scoring was Rashard Cabane who had 13 points.
