Showcases, tournaments fill DeKalb basketball schedules

Here are some of the top stories from Class AAAAA basketball this week:

*Showcase: The Miller Grove boys team, which won the past four Class AAAA championships, will face Norcross at 4 p.m. Saturday in the GACS Showcase sponsored by Blue Collar Basketball at Greater Atlanta Christian. Norcross won four of the past seven titles in the highest classification. Other games include Henry County vs. South Cobb (11:30 a.m.), Glenn Hills at Central Gwinnett (1 p.m.), Columbia vs. Peachtree Ridge (2:30 p.m.), North Cobb vs. Buford (5:30 p.m.), Morgan County vs. GAC (7 p.m.) and Berkmar vs. Whitefield Academy (8:30 p.m.). Miller Grove entered Tuesday night’s game against Mays on a six-game winning streak after losing its opener 63-62 to McEachern.

*Winless in Memphis: The M.L. King boys team suffered a couple of close losses against Tennessee teams in the Memphis vs. Atlanta Roundball Classic in Memphis last weekend. M.L. King, the only Class AAAAA team from Georgia participating in the event, lost 56-54 against Houston (Germantown, Tenn.) on Saturday after losing to White Station 73-68 on Friday. Greg King led the Lions with 16 points against Houston. The Georgia contingent, which included Harrison, Westlake, Columbia and Eagle’s Landing, went 5-5.

*DeKalb tournament: The boys and girls teams from Arabia Mountain, Chamblee, Clarkston, Druid Hills, McNair and Towers, the girls teams from Dunwoody and Meadowcreek, and the boys teams from Lithonia and Stone Mountain will participate in the DeKalb County School District Holiday Tournament, which begins at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Arabia Mountain and Clarkston. The tournament will continue on Dec. 21 and conclude on Dec. 22, with the championship games to be played at Arabia Mountain.

*Picking their spots: The Cedar Shoals boys team entered Tuesday’s game against Flowery Branch with a 4-4 record, but the Jaguars have won the games that mattered most. Cedar Shoals opened the season with two close losses to Florida teams but has since won four of six, including all three region contests to emerge as the only 8-AAAAA team that is unbeaten in region play. D’Andre Mahaffey scored 22 points in a big 51-46 victory over Salem last week. The Cedar Shoals girls are 8-0 overall and 3-0 in the region.
