Norcross 41, Colquitt County 27

By Michael Alpert

For the AJC

Colquitt County ran out of gas Friday night against Norcross.

Perhaps literally.

After driving nearly 2,000 miles from Moultrie for Class AAAAAA playoff wins at McEachern, Newnan and Parkview, the Packers couldn’t speed around Norcross in their fourth consecutive state semifinal and lost 41-27.

Norcross halted Colquitt with the most points against it this season, more than in Valdosta’s 38-36 win over the Packers in Game 8. They used a solid passing game and were opportunistic, employed some methodical marches and solid defense for which they’ve become known.

The undefeated Devils (14-0) took an early two-touchdown lead and never let Colquitt (10-4) closer than within one, upending a Packers team now 13-4 in the playoffs through the last four years, including 11-3 on the road. Dramatically, the Devils extended their winningest season ever, beyond their only quarterfinal against Warner Robins in 2006 and into Saturday’s 8:30 p.m. final against Lovejoy at the Georgia Dome.

Though it all, Devils coach Keith Maloof has been amazed by his player’s calm.

“I’ve called it a calm confidence,” he said. “I knew we had potential to be here, and I’m not surprised at all. We’ve always known we can compete.”

The Devils stretched their two-touchdown halftime lead to three touchdowns twice in the second half and made the Packers’ 240-mile ride home seem perhaps longer.

Norcross’ Alvin Kamara eclipsed 2,000 rushing yards this season with 133 and his 25th touchdown, in addition to catching a 65-yard scoring pass. Devils quarterback Joseph Wilber’s 211 yards and two touchdowns passing upped him to 2,342 yards with 27 scores.

Wilber helped his own cause with a 3-yard TD run with 7:09 remaining that put Norcross ahead 41-20. Colquitt came as close as it would on Cole Segraves’ 18-yard scoring pass to Todd Boyd with 1:23 left.

Norcross, the No. 1 seed from Region 8, led 24-10 at halftime and never looked back. The Devils went up 7-0 when Wilber passed 63 yards to Trey Smith with 4:30 to go in the first quarter, then went ahead 14-0 when Brandon Garner returned a fumble 22 yards 10:13 before halftime.

Region 1’s fourth-seeded Packers, the only semifinalist seeded lower than second, pulled within a touchdown on John Boatright’s 3-yard run, but the Devils stretched their lead back to 21-7 two plays later on Wilber’s 65-yard pass to Kamara. The Devils held their biggest advantage of the first half, 24-7 on Joseph Mahfood’s 24-yard field goal, but Colquitt’s Will Bannister answered with a 43-yard boot as the half expired.

Colquitt County: 0 10 3 14 – 27

Norcross: 7 17 10 7 – 41

N — Trey Smith 63 pass from Joseph Wilber (Joseph Mahfood kick)

N — Brandon Garner 22 fumble return (Mahfood kick)

CC — John Boatright 3 run (Will Bannister kick)

N — Alvin Kamara 65 pass from Wilber (Mahfood kick)

N — Mahfood 24 FG

CC — Bannister 43 FG

N — Mahfood 20 FG

CC — Bannister 34 FG

N — Kamara 1 run (Mahfood kick)

CC — Bobby Hill 9 pass from Daniel Mobley (Bannister kick)

N — Wilber 3 run (Mahfood kick)

CC — Todd Boyd 18 pass from Cole Segraves (Bannister kick)

@Russ the Temporary Mascot – 4 round trips from Moultrie to Cobb, Gwinnett (twice), and Newnan adds up in a hurry.

Are they counting Coach Propst’s trips to the mental health facility in Milledgeville in that 2000 miles?

Hey Camden, Look at Norcross. Their star player is not important. He’s just the best running back inthe state/country, doing whatever he can to help his team. Being a great athlete -worth a million bucks. Being humble————-worth everything.
Learn from this.

Two very good teams, athlete-wise, will play for 6A title. Norcross reminds of late 80’s Carver-columbus with Nicky Pitts(Ga signee). Must admit, without no. 6, u guys arent even in the playoffs. That kid is a college soph size man playing with boys.

Kirby “Not SO Smart” is hedging his bet . Alabama is using Kamara as a fall back in case Derik Henry from Yulee changes his mind again.
The pups are firmly committed to Kamara and will not pull the “Alabama – bait and switch” that Mr. Nick has become known for.
Norcross by 17 over Lovejoy.

We the parents and students of Norcross High School wish to commend the parents and students of the Colquit County Football Team for their stellar play and sportsmenship. We enjoyed having you as guest at the “Blue Devils Den” last evening. You showed great courage and you offered fair play. We wish you well in the years to come as we have great respect for the folks in Moultrie and of all the fans in your county. Thank you for being great guest.

How bout them Devils! Go big Blue…Remember these kids, when they were sophmores…I knew they were special then…
@ Mighty Mighty Wildcats.. don’t be a bitter person… You do not know NORCROSS, WE ARE A TEAM…We play as a team, win as a team, and lose a a team…Yes, our players are TEAM players.. the respect they have for one another is unparalleled. Even on the interviews last night after the game…”yes sir-no sir”..Coach Maloof has always instilled this in his players.

If you beat Camden and Colquitt, soundly, back-to-back, you’re a good team. Norcross, you’re a VERY good football team. I’ll not call you State Champs yet; I’ll wait until after the gam next week.

To all the Colquitt fans, you’re right a 2 point win in a 3-quarter scrimmage doesn’t really mean anything. But a 14 point win in semi-final game, that’s a bold statement. Hope you enjoyed your drive back south.

Derek Henry is NOWHERE NEAR the back that Kamara is, in my opinion. He’s a superb athlete and physical specimen but the competition he faced each week in his league in Florida is no match for Class AAAAAA in Georgia. Henry’s big and fast. Kamara is not as big, but just as fast and is a better natural runner. Henry is a better linebacker than he is a running back. Good luck to both of them in their college, and hopefully, NFL careers.

Glad to see “We Believe” continues to be the battle cry…. We started it in ‘06 at the NG game, when we were behind going into the 4th quarter, and pulled it out to win…back when we went 12-0 only to lose to WR, in the playoffs, carried it thru the BB state championships… Keep up the tradition! Do Atlanta HS football rule books allow for 4th QT. blocked punts??? (10:00 in 4th Qt last night ruffing call) and 4 th Qt .fumbles???(last year …the fumble to end the game verse grayson).poor kids again !!

@christophorm, even had the roughing the kicker call not been made, Norcross showed they were the better team last night and it would not have changed the ultimate outcome of the day.

I’m a Packer Backer. These guys continue to surprise everyone in the state and we’ll be back next year. That said, Norcross is the best team in the state this year–certainly the best we faced–and one of the best coached. CC had numerous opportunities and failed to capitalize…. Norcross didn’t. CC’s receivers dropped too many long, accurate passes from Seagraves and even when we won we lost. The best example is the turnover in the end zone(win) which our guy brought out to the 2(loss). The writer who suggested fatigue as a factor was probably right but–no excuses–Norcross out played us. Congrats ‘Cross….
Congrats Pack…for once again, defying expectations and making us incredibly proud. People forget that CC doesn’t have a “metro” area from which to draw–just farm kids. You can throw a rock from one end of Moultrie to the other and with the rare exception, like Seagraves, our kids are homegrown. Not bad for a bunch of “rednecks”. Coach Propst rubs folks the wrong way(even CC Fans at times) but he has the right formula for a rural program like ours…scheduling the toughest opponents possible in scrimmages and early in the season in preparation for one of the toughest schedules in Ga year in-year out. I couldn’t be prouder of our kids win or lose and, to paraphrase the Terminator, “We’ll Be Back”…..

Congrats to Norcross HS. You guys played well and got a hard fought win. I’m ssure thaere was some cheating involved because Colquitt County HS can’t possibly lose fair and square. We look forward to seeing you guys in the dome next week, and i can’t wait to see the 2 best RB’s in the state hands down go at it. I hope that we have put all of this sore loser nonsense about Lovejoy being thugs and troublemakers to rest now. My son is a senior and has been on this team since 9th grade. This was the best and most exciting game that I saw last night between LJ and NC. They bith brought it hard. I’m just glad that Norcross won and not those cheating, whiney bigotsw from Colquitt, including the most unsportsmanlike head coach I have ever seen. Good Luck Norcross, and may the best team win.

blocking a punt requires one to make contact with the ball. your guy didn’t
you can whine about the Roughing call if you want, but the no-call on the sack in the endzone of your quarterback when he grounded the ball was more than payback…

Your team has been called the thugs and cheaters and it appears it hurt your feelings. But Colquitt County is now cheaters and sore losers to who? Oh yeah we beat y’all didn’t we. We must have cheated because we haven’t been beating good teams in the playoffs for 4 years now have we? You will lose to Norcross and probably because of unsportsman like penalties against you little thugs.

Wow, great game Norcross and good luck in the Dome. Not sure how much Lovejoy has improved but I think the championship is yours if you want ti.

They replayed the punt several times on last night. I think the announcers thought the ball was not touched. It looked like the punter kicked the ball straight up. One thing for sure though, the punter did a great acting job. But whatever your view on the punt was, Norcross beat us fair and square. The punt had nothing to do with it.

Trust your #5 is OK. I do not remember him coming back after his second exit after the punt.

Was our coach cordial at the end of the game? Anyone hear his post game comments?

I can’t believe the ref goof is still being talked about. These guys are human and just like you and I can get it wrong sometimes. Even the high paid refs of the NFL get it wrong, unfortunately high scholl does not have instant replay for further reviews. It is a fact that sometimes you get that close call in a game and sometimes you don’t. It’s a judgement call and the bottom line is part of the game whether you like it or not. So lets put the call to rest, it would not had made a difference on the outcome anyway. Norcross palyed the better game.

@RobFromNorcross…I had no dog in the race… but you say” He did’nt touch the ball” ?you may be right…but again,I bet your punter has’nt punted a football straight up in the air, like that for zero gain all year.

ST Coleman – I totally agree with you about Henry not being in Kamara’s league.. Care to look up the numbers Henry put up vs Buford last season & the score of that game vs the Wolves!!

That said… The AAAAAA & AAA state championships run thru Gwinnett County, & have been for 13 + years now!! The best sports county in the Nation, muchless the state of UGA!!!

Go Blue Devils (Ohh not my Avondale!?!?!??!) !!!
Go Wolves!!!

2,000 miles?? Oh, that must’ve been the team from Moultrie, ARGENTINA! The Pack has had a great run of late, but the Blue Devils of Norcross have been flawless this year. The championship game ought to be interesting. For Norcorss and Lovejoy’s sake let’s hope the officiating is worthy of a championship game.

The 2,000 miles refers to the amount of traveling Colquitt has had to do in the playoffs. Not just last night’s game. You Atlanta and greater Atlanta schools do not know what’s it is like to travel from south Georgia every week. It is basically one region in south Georgia.

Hey, I know everyone wants to talk about region play but the fact of the matter is each region only has one maybe 2 dominant teams. Lovejoy’s region is what it is besides Norcross and NG, that region is no power house. Also, historically, Lovejoy’s record against S. GA is pretty good. This Lovejoy program didn’t come from no where

As for Lovejoydad…..Apple’s don’t fall far from the tree…guess we know where the unsportsmanlike thugs mentality come from

Norcross vs Colquitt game was a clean game and we were just out played. Hands down Norcross should be the State Champions…they’ve earned that title and just need it to play out on the field this Saturday to have it printed on paper.

Now that all the formalities are out of the way, Lovejoy will be State Champions this year. I have waited until now to do this because it was not a given that we would get here. Now that we are, It is time to “Win The Last One”. Norcross has a good team but the edge must go to Lovejoy. Far to much talent. Position by position, there is not a more talented team in the state, maybe the country. Mind my statement, Position by position. I sit and watch football at the high school level often. Calf., Ohio, Florida, Michigan and more. There is excellent football being played in Georgia and many teams considered National Powers would fall mightily against Georgia football. Back to the original subject. Norcross does not have enough. This will be a surprise to many but there is only one thing Lovejoy needs to remember, Any Given Saturday. It still applies. Other than that, there is no reason for them to doubt. It is theirs for the taking.
