AAAAAA blog: Does history matter? It favors coaches who’ve been there, running teams, South Georgia and Gwinnett

Sports writers love history. It gives perspective to what we’re watching.

Here are five things about history and the Class AAAAAA football tournament. Curious to know what you think.

Does any of this matter?

- The coaches at North Cobb (Shane Queen) and Norcross (Keith Maloof) have never coached in a state championship game. Lovejoy’s Al Hughes coached in one last year, didn’t win it. The coach at Colquitt County (Rush Propst) has won five state titles, all in Alabama. Perhaps the question would be more interesting if Grayson’s Mickey Conn hadn’t won last year. Before that, the last coach to win Georgia’s highest classification with no previous championship-game experience was Tim McFarlin of Roswell in 2006. Before that, it was Mike O’Brien of Valdosta in 1998 (and he had plenty of championship experience as an assistant). So are we talking once a decade here?

- It’s been 25 years since a Clayton County school won the highest class. Is Lovejoy listening? It’s been 45 years since a Cobb County school won the highest class. What of that, North Cobb?

- Except for the tie in 2006, every state final in the highest class since 1995 has been won by Gwinnett County or South Georgia. Does that mean Norcross vs. Colquitt County is for the title?

- No team has won five games away from home in the playoffs in any classification. Colquitt would need to do that to win the title this year. Colquitt’s record on the road under Rush Propst is 12-2. Does home field matter any more?

- Colquitt County has thrown for more than 3,000 yards and gets 63 percent of its total offense passing. North Cobb WR Xavier Borishade has over 1,000 yards receiving. (I think Andre Hastings was over 1,000 yards receiving for 1987 Morrow, but that team had a couple of 1,000-yard rushers, too.) No true passing team like Colquitt (or perhaps even North Cobb) has won Georgia’s highest classification since Valdosta in 1971, and even the ‘71 Cats probably didn’t get 63 percent of its yardage passing. Can a passing team win Class AAAAAA?

Based on history, it doesn’t look like anybody can win it this year. :)

History does not matter. If it did, Valdosta would still be in the mix. What matters is the players on the field when they tee it up. History does not run, pass, block and tackle The only element of “history” that matters is that which pertains to the teams’ performances this year. In that sense, Colquitt has proven its road worthiness, but they haven’t played Norcross on the road – yet. So, we’ll see.

First of all, Coach Hughes coached in the Title game last season. Second, NO. Lovejoy is not listening.

If we had our 2 best players healthy it would be Lowndes playing North Cobb instead of Lovejoy. This is the weakest final 4 in history.
Get ready for Lowndes to start another multi year streak of perfection starting next year. Our JV and 9th grade teams are the bomb.

Is this year’s semifinal weak because your beloved Vikings lost 3 weeks ago or maybe it’s because you guys thought more region 1-AAAAAA teams would be there. ” Not So Fast My Friend”…lol, funny because you guys give Rush Prospt a lot of grief but he has the only team from that region that consistently gets passed the 2nd round in recent years. You say your JV/9th grade teams are the bomb, lets just hope they do something other than run on offense and defend the pass better on defense because that’s been yall achilles heel.

sportsnut…finally saw your boys and they are good. Of course you already knew that and hopefully so does N. Cobb as they prepare for battle. It should be a good game. Either team repping in the ’ship wouldn’t hurt my feelings.

I believe coaching does matter, especially if the talent on the field is equal. Play calling and making offensive and defensive adjustments will determine the outcome of the game…….. :-)

….and that’s why I love my NORTH COBB Warriors. All you got to do is do what you do best, keep shocking the world. It matters not what computer stats say about you, what history says about you, blah, blah, blah. It only matters what you say about yourself. You have clearly spoken….”We will not go quietly into the night. We will not vanish without a fight. We’re going to live on, we’re going to survive. Friday night we will WIN.”

How we supposed to compete with them MONSTERS at Norcross? They are the Goliaths of high school football. They are the Ducks of offense and the Yankees of defense. They are practically…UNBEATABLE.

We ain’t nothing but a bunch of poor, tiny, little undersized Hawgs. BUT….

We’re on a mission from Rush….come to daddy.

Lovejoy has beaten NO ONE. Well maybe half of one when you add NG with a QB at 60%. They played a total of 4 teams with winnings records. Of those 2 were ranked and they are 1-1 against then, a win against NG (not at 100%), and a loss to Colquitt who as Todd pointed out lost to Valdosta and Lowndes (both out the first round). Now they play North Cobb who maybe equal to Colquitt but also hasn’t beaten a ranked team. With the 4 teams left it will be an upset if Norcross doesn’t walk right over everyone.

I think Lovejoy has beaten 12 teams that they played. All these teams came to play and did not get it done. That does not make them no one. They worked hard for it too but for one reason or another, Lovejoy came out on top. Every team that played had their chance. If you have no dog in this race, first thing for you to do is get yourself one. Train it or attempt to. See if you can get the desired results. Bring it to the race and then maybe, just maybe, we can talk football.

@ TitleTown USA == No desperation. I am who I am. I do not need validation from anyone but the wife and kid’s and of course, God. This is my calling in life. I am and have always been an advocate for the kid’s. There were people in my life that helped make me who I am and I will never stop giving back. Enthusiasm yes, desperation, no. I have been a volumteer at Lovejoy since I came to the area. I have served as President of the Basketball Booster Club. I am close enough to the program that I can talk with Coach Hughes at any time. The kid’s know me. the parents know me. I want these kids to experience the best. I also want them to be at their best even when they lose. All the kid’s at Lovejoy are my kid’s. Not just athletes but ALL of them.

Anxious to see if the AJC’s blatant prejudice against reporting anything about Norcross football will continue this weekend. Bad judgment by AJC left them out of the paper last week. Will be hard for the best team in the state (as judged by polls) to be omitted from the paper if they make the state finals, as much as the AJC would prefer to ignore them. I can see the headline now: “XXX loses bid to win state title”!

@ CoffeeC100 = The wing T is fine if you can always run the ball, but if your defense ever gives up a big play or two or you encounter a high scoring offense and get behind late then you’re in trouble. Or if you happen to come up against a run stuffer defense that loads up the line with 8 men, then the only way to loosen it up is to be able to spread them out and throw it. I think that is what eventually got to Camden, not letting Ramsey air it out. He has the arm is a good looking quarterback, but they are a run oriented offense.
Colquitt County has hope because they can pass, but I don’t think they will beat Norcross.

Here’s the thing I’m trying to figure out, everyone talks about Lovejoy’s schedule but besides the parade of flags in Colquitt which ended in a 7-14 loss with all other stats in our favor, Lovejoy hasn’t struggled with ANY other team. I can relate if you look at Lovejoy’s record and they have some close games in the region but the lopsided victories should show you that they play above the competition level for the season. You can only play the schedule they give you and everyone has an excuse of why their team lost, the fact of the matter is North Cobb HANDLED Valdosta and struggled with Mill Creek team who struggled with Alpharetta in the first round who Lovejoy dominated (since we want to talk about teams that we played). Secondly, if you’re saying “two best players” and think about beating a team like Lovejoy, you are sadly mistaken. Lovejoy plays as a team and it will take a TEAM effort to beat them, plus “history” shows that Lowndes @ Lovejoy doesn’t favor Lowndes. North Cobb is a good team and I look forward to a GREAT game tonight, but for the fans of the teams at home, accept defeat graciously and don’t make excuses
