Girls basketball: Sunday holiday tournament roundup

Nike Interstate Shootout

Central Catholic (Ore.) 68, Norcross 61: Despite a fourth straight 20-plus point night from star senior Diamond DeShields, Norcross was unable to protect a halftime lead in the finals of the Nike Interstate Shootout. Bri Williams’ 3-pointer gave Norcross a 33-32 advantage at intermission, and the Blue Devils would stretch the lead to 41-34 in the third before Central Catholic ended the quarter on a 15-6 run by forcing Norcross into a series of turnovers. DeShields would finish with 28 points and Shayla Cooper finished with 18. Kailee Johnson and Jordan Reynolds would each top 18 points for Central Catholic. The Blue Devils next face Duluth this Friday as Region 7-AAAAAA play continues.

HS wrestling poll: Gordon Lee, Archer remain on top

Class A No. 1 Gordon Lee stayed atop the polls after pulling out an impressive win over Class AAAAAA No. 6 Kennesaw Mountain recently. Gordon Lee also captured the Woodford County Invitational. Class AAAAAA No. 1 Archer won yet another event to stay atop the rankings in the state’s highest classification by taking the McCallie Invitational. Carrollton finished fifth in the event and moved up in the AAAA poll to No. 4. Class AAAA No. 3 Alexander finished eighth in the event to maintain its spot. In Class A, Darlington moved up one spot to No. 6 after a nice showing at the Rockmart Invitational.

Lanier Holiday Classic

Providence Christian 38, East Jackson 28- Following a strong opening two quarters Providence Christian took a promising 22-8 lead into the intermission.  Jessie Kowalewicz scored a game high 11 points and teammate Katie Scott scored 9.

Union Grove Holiday Tournament

Woodland Henry 49, Luella 31: In the championship game of the Union Grove Tournament both teams were locked up at the half 18-18. It was a strong 2nd half for the Wolfpack who won the tournament and improved to 15-1 on the year. Aalyiah Dotson had a team high 8 points.

Westminster Holiday Classic

Grady 35, Paideia 30: In the championship game both teams got off to slow starts only posting a 5-3 Grady lead after the 1st quarter. Ellery Koelker-Wolfe found baskets for Paideia and scored a game high 15 points but it was not enough to answer Grady’s strong second half.

Battle of the States (Hiawassee)

Dawson County 62, Murphy County 22: In the championship game Dawson County rolled to victory. Will Anglin had a team high 26 points, outscoring Murphy County by himself. Teammate Tyler Dominy scored 7 points for the Tigers and was named the tournament MVP. Dawson County remains a perfect 13-0.

Big Red Shootout (Gainesville)

Chattahoochee 59, Parkview 48: Markus Terry continued his impressive scoring exhibition by dropping 24 points in the 3rd place game of the shootout.

Lake City Classic (Allatoona)

Alexander 68, Central Gwinnett 63: In the Championship game Central Gwinnett fell short despite strong games from teammates Shaun Jones and Brian Egejuru. Jones scored 20 points and Egejuru scored 10. The duo earned all tournament honors, but Alexander was able to take home the hardware.

Boys basketball: Friday holiday tournament roundup

Battle of the States

Dawson County 39, Hayesville (N.C.) 25: Tyler Dominy scored 19 points to help Dawson County improve to 12-0 with a win over Hayesville. Zack Zottorell managed to keep Haynesville close with 11 points, but Dawson County, which has not allowed 30 points all season, stretched a 23-16 halftime advantage into the final score by pulling away in the third quarter.

Campbell Holiday Classic

Hiram 53, Pope 49: After jumping out to a 14-2 after the first quarter, Hiram appeared on its way to an easy victory. A barrage of 3-pointers from Pope tied the game 22-22 at the half, and Pope raced out to a 27-22 in the third. Hiram would recover to take a lead into the fourth, then bounce back from a 43-38 hole with a 9-2 run to ultimately pull away at the free throw line for a 53-49 win.

Capital City Classic

Aquinas 64, Ridge View (S.C.) 60: Ahmed Hill, one of the nation’s top juniors, scored 27 points to pace Aquinas to a 64-60 win over …

Colquitt County Shootout

Washington County 59, Monroe 45: Shon Kitchens scored 18 points to help Washington County race past Monroe in the Colquitt County Shootout semifinals. Nia Johnson had 17 points while Daknequa White contributed 15 points for the victors. Washington County led 30-19 at halftime before cruising to the win.

KSA Holiday Tournament

Lassiter 48, Wellington (Fla.) 34: The Lassiter Trojans traveled to Orlando for the KSA Holiday Tournament and posted an easy win in the opening round. Maeve Vitale scored 12 points to pace the Trojans while Gabby Garza contributed seven points in a winning cause.

Naples Holiday Shootout

Tucker 56, Wheaton East (Lou.) 43: The Tucker Tigers took care of business with a 56-43 victory over Wheaton East out of New Orleans. Naima Jackson paced the Tigers with 18 points as Tucker was never really challenged in the Florida tournament.

AJC all-class player of the year: Norcross RB Kamara ‘played at a level that not many can play’

Alvin Kamara was a 2,000-yard rusher and one of the 10 most heavily recruited running backs in the country this year, but if there was a moment that defined his senior season at Norcross, it was a catch.

It came with less than five minutes to play in the Class AAAAAA championship game. Norcross trailed Lovejoy 14-9.

Kamara would rush for 141 yards that day in the Georgia Dome – his 11th straight game over 100.  But facing a third-and-14 from the Norcross 39-yard line, Kamara was lined up as an inside receiver in what was a make-or-break situation.

Kamara ran an out route, cut back across the middle and caught quarterback Joseph Wilber’s pass in stride down the left sideline for the touchdown, 69 yards. Norcross suddenly led a game that looked lost. The 21-14 victory gave Norcross its first state title in 56 years of varsity football.
