Sandy Creek 31, Burke County 20

Burke County had taken the lead and the momentum in the third quarter of Friday’s Class AAAA quarterfinal at Sandy Creek.

When the fourth quarter started, Sandy Creek (13-0) responded in a big way, rallying from its second deficit of the night to take a 31-20 win.

Junior receiver Demarre Kitt hauled in a 74-yard touchdown pass from Cole Garvin with 10:24 to play, erasing a 20-17 Burke advantage, and tailback Eric Swinney finished the Bears off with a 38-yard run with 5:53 left.

“They had been stuffing the run and coach finally trusted us with that play,” said Kitt, who took a 15-yard sideline pattern, wheeled and made the lone Burke defender miss and had a straight sprint for the go-ahead touchdown. “They’re either going to make the tackle or miss. Most of the time they miss.”

Kitt finished with seven catches for 153 yards, and also had a 4-yard touchdown catch in the first half.

Burke County’s big-play machine, junior quarterback Donquell Green, rushed for 104 yards on 15 carries, including a 44-yard touchdown that gave the Bears (11-2) an early 7-0 lead.

Sandy Creek got 84 yards on 14 carries from Swinney and another 92 yards on 16 attempts from Delvin Weems. Garvin finished with 201 passing yards, most of them with Kitt on the other end.

“Demarre’s a special player,” said Sandy Creek coach Chip Walker. “Everything was going their way and that took the wind out of their sails.”

Sandy Creek took the lead on Weems’ 22-yard run midway through the second period, and the Patriots led 17-7 after Mitchell McMillin’s 25-yard field goal with 2:31 left in the half.

Sandy Creek opted all night to kick off short and avoid allowing Green a big return. After McMillin’s field goal, Burke’s Tom Ellison returned the squib kick to midfield. The Bears took advantage of the good field position, riding Green’s arm instead of his legs. He hit Untorrey Thomas for a 25-yard gain on third down, then found Dmitri Butts wide open over the middle for the touchdown.

Sandy Creek’s Zerric Willis blocked the extra point try.

Green, who had 135 passing yards, connected with Butts for a 65-yard touchdown midway through the third quarter.

I think there were a lot of god awful calls in the first half against BC!!!! That’s ok. Sandy Creek is a very good team, but on a neutral field, I think we all know what would happen… GO BC!!! Next year a coin toss will not matter…. BEARS 2013!!!!!

Some sad statements. The better team tonight won the game. These are teens giving it their all and they all deserve some respect. Its demeaning to the Burke kids when you take away a learning experience and try to make them believe they were cheated.

The National Weather Service in Peachtree City, GA has issued a Category 5 Hurricane warning for Sandy Creek. You can expect to see skilled position players with 4.3 speed and a punishing defense that will knock your block off when you arrive in Monroe next Friday. Yes Sandy Creek, you will travel or this playoff system is rigged. That’s the bottom line…..

Let’s do the Math: Eastside beats Monroe SubArea 35-0 and Sandy Creek beats Eastside 55-0. So …… how in the world is Monroe SubArea even going to show up against Sandy Creek. Save your smack talk for your pep rally on Friday morning!

Is this the same Monroe Area team lost 35-0 to
Eastside and a week later SC demolished that same Eastside team 55-0 in the First round of the playoffs

We all knew certain Burke posters were going to have some excuse when they lost rather than having class. For Peach it was our “wet” field. For Burke it is apparently the refs.

I am not sure a coin toss will decide where we play as neither of our stadiums is big enough to host a AAAA semi-final. Look Monroe Area, we respect you, but you are not as good as Burke County. You are not as fast as they are, and you don’t have a play maker on the level of Gator Green.

If not having your QB makes you lose 35-0, then you are a one-man show. You got the easy part of the bracket and won some games. Great job. Now you get to play a real team.

It amazes me to see how people tend to blame their losses with excuses like paid-off refs. There are times when they should “man up” & take the loss & come to grips with the fact that the better team won. Honestly, the refs made some very bad calls against Sandy Creek as well. So, they called ‘em BOTH ways.

Great job by Sandy Creek. Defensively…they et some plays get by them where the coverage slipped & Burke got through for 1st downs, but they managed to stop the drive eventually & that shows how disciplined they are because they never gave up on their pursuit. Offensively…the two RBs, Swinney & Weems, held up their end of the game as expected. They ran hard & it proved to be the spark for the offense. Garvin locked on to Kitt all night & that hurt because he missed Wilson several times which could have made the score look even better.

One more step closer to the Dome! Goooooo Creeeeeeeeek!!!!

Don’t think I can ever recall so much talking by supporters of a high school team as Burke Co. The problem with that is you have to swallow the medicine if your team gets smoked. Good game but SC is just a better team. Sorry. There’s always next year. SC has a long history of putting tons of D-1 players out and the coaching staff is the best in any state size category. And just think, it’s a young team this year…think what they’re gonna be like next year.

As ignorant as most of the burke county fans came across all season long I’m not surprised they aren’t on here spewing some more of that burke county broken english nonsense. A lot of the burke co people had practically been wanting to play Sandy Creek all season long. Well last night they got what they asked for. This Sandy Creek team would beat that burke county team 9 out 10 times and that’s being nice.

Way to play ball Sandy Creek……You really showed up to play some football!!!!!! The team effort was amazing but lets talk about DEFENSE…..we have heard the famous quote “Offense wins games but Defense wins championships. Our defense will no doubt take us there…….they were the force that shut down the “Gator”. Chris Williams, Henderman and Zach Lane were the driving force on the line……junior middle linebacker Khari Lain continues to dominate and shut down the offense……Wesley Sullivan and Micah Solomon rounds out this explosive defense.

Referees for every playoff game are supplied by the Georgia High School Association. The home team has nothing to do with their selection.

Great game Creek! I’ll always cheer for SC as long as Chip Walker is their coach. Actually, I’ll always cheer for whoever plays that classless squad from Burke. Those players are the worst and the fans are even worst. But let ‘em talk cause they dont have a real program, but rather they have a small period of time where they have a few good players that can win some games. 3 years from now, they’ll be lucky to be a 4 seed….

In fairness to Burke County, the trash-talking, bad grammar posters are a small subset of their fans. Most of them are great folks who love their team. With all due respect to the other teams still playing in AAAA, Burke is the second best team in AAAA.

Say what u want we all know who the best team was and it wasn’t sandy creek your players are mediocre and those refs were payed real good i c why y’all were undefeated with refs like that u guys can win at the college level and u right as hard as our guys played it shouldn’t have been taking Away by bad calling by the refs and all y’all that are on here talking u were real quiet last night you guys don’t have any fans we had 4 times more fans than u had that’s why u all had jugs to make up for the fans u didn’t have one thing is for sure have fun and take care of business but Burke will go 15-0 next year only loosing 5 seniors and it really want b close next year and if this game was played anywhere else it wouldn’t have been close just imagine the touchdowns u guys had that shouldn’t have had on 4th and 3 and we sack the ball carrier in the backfield a.d the refs let him get up and run for the first down then on the backwards past 10 yards behind the line of scrimmage and we picked it up and ran it back and they called incomplete really but i am not a sore looser wish y’all luck your players didn’t have anything to do with it and they know they escaped away with a win last night that’s why they celebrated like they won a championship game in the 3rd u suppose to do that when u win the championship

Please look on youtube and see the game film, the Sandy Creek runner’s knee never hit the ground on that 4 and 3. Good call by the officials. I am looking for the backwards pass now. More to follow!

Burkeboyjp,

Just reviewed the pass you said was a backwards pass and it clearly shows the QB throwing it foward. Please look at the film to verify before you bad mouth the officials. BC is a great team that got beat by another great team that was better preprared.

I’m a Burke alum and I’m proud of the way Burke played. The fans are excited about the program because we went from an average team to one of the best teams in the state. In defense of NYCdawg I remember in one of his earlier posts he mentioned Sandy would win state this year. Yes we are Bear fans but we do know a great team when we see one. Sandy was well balanced and just had too many weapons. Great game and good luck the rest of the playoffs.

A loss is a loss is a loss. Don’t blame the refs regardless of what you think they did wrong because they can’t put the ball in the endzone. If Burke’s defense didn’t allow scores then they would have won the game. You won’t go very far in life if every time you are on the short end of the stick you blame the rest of the world.

I can’t believe Monroe Area is trash talking now. Didn’t they learn a couple years ago???? I don’t think they crossed midfield the last time we played them.
Simply put, your strength is the running game and our defense is built to stop the run.

Hey BC fans, I was in perfect alignment with the incomplete pass that you want to lay claim was a lateral… ehhhh wrong, the ball went forward over a solid yard. Go watch yourself on GSHA.com, but I doubt you will, because then it would give you a reason to accept defeat. You are all sore losers, horrible sportsmanship from grown “children”. Good grief.

@burkeboy.. have some class for your team and fans. Burke is a great team, but you are taking away from a great effort. Stay positive, not negative. One thing I can say about the SC people, they have class and only speak about the game. They do the talking on the field. In addition, referees are from GHSA. First people to be blamed are the refs. There were calls against SC that were bad too. Just like the NFL, you win some, you lose some calls. You play on!!!
