North Cobb 42, Mill Creek 35

North Cobb and Mill Creek came into their Class AAAAAA quarterfinal matchup averaging a combined 90.5 points through the first two rounds, so a 7-0 game early in the second quarter was not what many people had expected to see.

Then the turnovers started, and the offensive fireworks began.

North Cobb turned four of Mill Creek’s six turnovers into 28 points in a 12-minute span midway through the second half and went on to defeat the Hawks 42-35 in Acworth on Friday. The victory puts North Cobb (11-2) in the state semifinals for the first time since 1959. Mill Creek (9-4) fell one game short of reaching the semifinals for the first time in the program’s nine-year history.

North Cobb trailed 21-7 at halftime but got back into the game on its first possession of the second half, driving 55 yards in six plays. Mill Creek appeared ready to answer the score, but Jacorey Lewis fumbled at the 7-yard line at the end of a 38-yard run, and the Warriors’ Emmanuel Slaughter recovered.

That was all the momentum North Cobb needed. A 65-yard pass from Tyler Queen to Xavier Borishade, along with a personal foul penalty on Mill Creek on the play, moved the ball to the Hawks’ 14-yard line. Queen scored on a 1-yard run three plays later, tying the game at 21-21.

Another fumble by Lewis and two interceptions of Mill Creek quarterback Daniel David led to three more North Cobb touchdowns and a 42-28 lead.

Queen finished 14-of-23 passing for 221 yards and had four touchdowns rushing and a TD pass. J’Vontae Herrod rushed for 111 yards on 21 carries, and Borishade had eight receptions for 151 yards and two TDs.

James King had two interceptions and Latrell Gibbs added one for the Warriors. Cameron Albright had an interception, recovered a fumble and threw a touchdown pass.

A North Cobb turnover in the first half gave Mill Creek some early momentum. The Hawks recovered a fumble at the North Cobb 17 on the first play of the second quarter and scored five plays later. Mill Creek added two more touchdowns in the final 6:18 of the half to lead 21-7.

Lewis, who had rushed for 595 yards in the Hawks’ first two playoff games, finished with 154 yards on 26 carries.

I love it. It matters not what the peanut gallery has to say, Jimb. At the end of the day, only four teams have practice on Monday, and North Cobb is one of them. It’s quite interesting that folks can’t give a compliment to this amazing team, especially when due. It’s all good becasue we have an entire Warrior Nation behind our boys. All we have to do is win. Win. It matters not about turn overs, the #1 RB in Gwinnett, blah, blah, blah. We are going to the Dome. We’re just that good.

NC all the way!!

So proud of the NC team, you boys deserve all of this and more! Continue to let haters filled with criticism and jealousy (hint, hint Jimb) fuel the drive to the dome!

I’ll say it again, North Cobb, act like Lovejoy is Valdosta. Play with the same focus, enthusiasm, and motivation and you will be in the Dome on December 13. Hope you have a good week of practice and take the field Friday night mentally sharp and physically healthy.
