Marist 15, Stockbridge 7

Marist ended the most successful season in Stockbridge school history and outlasted the host Tigers 15-7 in a Class AAAA quarterfinal Friday night.

A last-minute drive Stockbridge drive ended 25 yards short of the goal line and Marist (12-1) advanced to the state semifinals for the first time since 2008. Stockbridge moved from its own 25-yard line into War Eagles territory, when Maetron Thomas was ruled down inbounds with 17 seconds left to play. A disorganized Tigers offense completed one last-ditch pass before time expired.

With the win, Marist (12-1) stopped an 11-game Stockbridge win streak and extended its own winning streak to 11. Stockbridge (11-2), in the school’s first-ever quarterfinal game, had given up only 10 points per game on defense since a 23-0 loss to M.L. King in the season opener.

The Tigers’ offense dug its own holes throughout, committing several procedure penalties and 16 violations overall.

“If it means anything to you, it should hurt,” Stockbridge head coach Kevin Whitley told his heartbroken players in the post-game huddle.

Gray King scored on a 15-yard run with 4:06 to play in the third quarter, putting Marist ahead 10-7. The War Eagles took over at the Stockbridge 36 and moved inside the 10 behind a 23-yard run from quarterback Myles Willis.

After Marist downed a punt inside the Stockbridge 2, the defense picked up two points when it stopped Thomas in his own end zone, putting Marist ahead 12-7 with 9:46 left to play. Marist added a 19-yard field goal from Fletcher Malloy with 4:32 to go.

“We were able to get some push up front in the second half, and that made the difference,” Marist coach Alan Chadwick said. “Our kids got more comfortable as the game went on.”

Marist converted a Stockbridge turnover for the game’s first score, a 24-yard field goal from Thomas Andrews. Malik Bryan fumbled an exchange from quarterback Trent Earl at the 31, where Nick Carrier recovered. The War Eagles moved the ball inside the 10 before the Tigers forced fourth down.

Stockbridge recovered a muffed punt by Griffin King at the Marist 30 with less than a minute to play before halftime. The Tigers scored five plays later when quarterback Trent Earl ran in from four yards out for a 7-3 halftime lead.

M – 3 – 0 – 7 – 5 – 15
S – 0 – 7 – 0 – 0 – 7

M – Thomas Andrews 24 FG
S – Trent Earl 4 run (Corey Hall kick)
M – Gray King 15 run (Andrews kick)
M – Safety
M – Fletcher Malloy 19 FG

Defensive struggle. Stockbridge fans must stay home to avoid having to listen to their public address announcer. His day job must be in a strip joint. ” Tiger family on stage 3″ . Overseed your field next year, what a waste of homefield advantage!

Good win War Eagles! Stockbridge was a tough opponent, with a great, speedy defense. Marist defense dominated, especially our line. Stockbridge fans were outnumbered at least 3 to 1. The Stockbridge PA announcer was entertaining, but next year try not to announce while the ball is in play.

Interesting game. Marist’s offense was stymied most of the game by a very good Stockbridge defense. I disagree with the Stockbridge fans being outnumbered 3 to 1. I sat on the Stockbridge side at halftime to watch the Marist marching band and the visiting bleachers, while pretty full, were much smaller than the home stands. Also disagree that the announcer was entertaining…are you kidding? He was loud and obnoxious. He reminded me of the bad youth football announcers that were parents. The Stockbridge parents should thank Marist for getting the microphone out of the horrible man’s hands! Did anyone hear that Gray King broke his collarbone? If so, a devastating loss. Last, it looks like another coin toss to determine the home team next Friday because Ridgeland is a number one seed. Maybe Chadwick can let one of the Fathers make the call. :)

9 for Stockbridge is a man > Announcer is a clown>Least classy team I have seen in a long time, hundreds of yards in penalties, cheap shots galore and trying to injure. ripped QB’s helment off- Henry Co board of education should review these guys and see if that is how they want to be represented.

Let’s hope Marist wins the coin toss-Ridgeland is northwest of Ringgold/FT. Ogelthorpe, about 2 hours from Dunwoody. Shouldn’t put too much stock in rumors about injuries.

WarEagle – was the field as bad in person as it looked online?

Stockbridge didn’t look that sharp. I think Marist played well below their usual standards especially on offense. They will need to pick that up against a good Ridgeland team.

Lex3: Rumor about injuries? Did you not see that King wasn’t playing at the end of the game and had his arm/shoulder in a sling? Something happened; hopefully he will be able to play next week.

MaristDad– pls stop discussing any thoughts your head may have about injuries on a public blog. They may not teach this in band camp, but the football team would prefer not to share that info with the world.

@Go Trojans! — the field was a bit slippery, which hurt our offensive push, but credit to Stockbridge’s quick players for closing the holes we thought we had. You are right, we need to play better on offense if we are going to win. The defense is leading the War Eagles.

Hey Idiot: Very appropriate name you gave yourself. Regarding your jab against the band, I also had a son that was all-Dekalb at Marist in football. Do you REALLY think Ridgeview does their scouting only through blogs? Get a grip, Forrest.

@Idiot, Wow do you think any other team ( in this case Ridgeland ) would prepare any different for the offense no matter if a freshman or King was running the ball?
Come on, first you use the handle “Idiot”: then make a condesending remark about “Band Camp”. Do you have any kids or did you eat them at birth?
Really Ridgeland will probably have a let down when they see a sub in there if King can’t go and that will add to the Marist advantage even if for one series.
So unless you a HIPA police don’t get too excited. Now if you are a coach and you use the idiot handle I guess I will have to guess which one you are.

@S_on_my_chest — dude, time to man up. See your coach did in your local paper: “They dominated us up front,” Whitley said. “Physically, we couldn’t get anything going.”; “You have to give Marist credit,” he said. “They were the better team tonight.”. http://www.henryherald.com/news/2012/dec/01/mistakes-doom-stockbridge-loss-marist/

Mr. Idiot – you’re an idiot. MaristDad is a fairly regular poster on here; and has always posted with the kind of classy and thoughtful words we all should expect from the Marist Family. You? not so much, Idiot. I’m not a Marist fan and I didn’t see the game last night. By the time I woke up this morning my son already heard the “rumor” about Mr. King. I hope it’s untrue, but NEXT MAN UP! Get a handle, Forrest!

Apparanently Ridgeland has win the coin toss and the next game will be in Rossville, GA. Time to travel, War Eagle family. Let’s let the coaches worry about who is playing and focus on supporting our team.

That was a good, hard fought defensive game last night…check the score! Anyone in the stands could see that Marist had their hands full and we beat ourselves with penalties and mistakes…no excuses, we have to own that. With that being said, I want to Congratulate the Stockbridge Tigers for awesome season!!! Our players worked hard and played hard all year, and although they fell short of their goal, they are still winners in my eyes! I also want to thank the fans that supported the Tigers, especially last night…we had a good showing.
