Stars come out in Class AAAA

It goes without saying that by this point in the season, there are a lot of football players showing what they can do. Even so, the remaining eight teams in Class AAAA seem particularly star-studded.

A handful – opposing coaches might argue they’re more than a handful – of players to watch in the third round of the Class AAAA playoffs:

Donquell Green, Burke County: Green goes by the nickname “Gator”, but “Goodness Gracious” might be more appropriate. The junior quarterback has rushed for 1,626 yards and 31 touchdowns, scoring two or more touchdowns in nine of the Bears’ 12 games. He’s also passed for 1,202 yards and nine more Tds, and perhaps most impressive, he’s thrown just one interception in 115 pass attempts. Said Sandy Creek coach Chip Walker, “The best way to slow him down is to keep him on the sideline.”

Darrell Bridges, Ridgeland: While teammate and big-time recruit Vonn Bell has garnered a lot of attention, Bridges has his eye on 2,000 rushing. Going into this week’s quarterfinal against Mary Persons, Bridges has 1,919 yards and 33 touchdowns, averaging more than 9 yards per carry.

Vonn Bell: Being recruited as a defensive back, Bell has rushed for 922 yards and 12 touchdowns, and has caught 14 passes for 517 yards and 6 Tds, averaging 37 yards per catch.

Stanton Truitt, Monroe Area: Truitt has played only eight games, but has still amassed nearly 2,000 yards of total offense (1,300 rushing, 690 passing) and has accounted for 25 touchdowns.

Kwan Brooks, Monroe Area: South Effingham won’t be able to focus all its attention on Truitt, because Brooks will make them pay. He’s rushed for 1,711 yards and 17 touchdowns.

Trevon Byrd, Monroe Area: It seems Byrd makes plays from all over the field. He has 87 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, 5 sacks, 2 fumble recoveries, 1 interception, 8 quarterback hurries 6 batted passes and a partridge in a pear tree. If you’re out of breath reding that stat line, imagine how opposing quarterbacks must feel.

Trenton Earl, Stockbridge: The Tigers have an 1,100-yard rusher in Malik Bryan, but Earl makes the team go. He’s passed for 1,157 yards and rushed for 544 more.

Josh Mercer, South Effingham: Mercer has keyed the upstart Mustangs’ run to the third round, rushing for 1,346 yards and 24 touchdowns.

Myles Willis, Marist: The senior quarterback has rushed for 1,038 yards and 16 Tds while passing for 860 yards and 8 Tds.

Nick Davis, Mary Persons: The Bulldogs place premiums on running the ball and playing solid defense, and Davis is option one on offense, with more than 1,200 yards rushing.

Eric Swinney and Delvin Weems, Sandy Creek: The two sophomore tailbacks have combined for more than 2,100 yards has  and they’ve forced opponents to stay honest in defending the Patriots’ high-power passing game. Receivers Kyle Wilson and Demarre Kitt are both explosive, but they get to run free often because Swinney and Weems are doing damage.

Bridges and Bell are the top combination in the state.

They are right up there. I’d put my money on the duo from Sandy Creek as they have rarely seen much of the 2nd half of games most of the year. Those 2 will be something to pay attention to the next 2 years.

Can’t wait to see those Creek backs Friday.. Assuming the game is being streamed (anyone know?).. I have heard that these two young boys have crazy talent… I wish the AJC would have included the rest of Gator Green’s stats. Trying to be as unbiased as possible when I say this but, I think the Gator is the most dynamic player in the state regardless of classification. During the regular season the kid barely played in the second halves of games. He also has returned multiple kicks for touchdowns and has a few interceptions (a couple of those have gone for TD’s also if memory serves me right). And he’s only a Junior, scary talent Safe travels to all the fans and teams this week.

These POY things are always questionable. Tons of teams have players that don’t play the 2nd half that get left off consideration or teams that have balanced attacks with alot of skill players.

Bottom line Robert Nkemdiche is the POY. Nobody can honestly say that the #1 recruit in all of America by any recruiting standard isn’t the best player in the state of Georgia. Anything else is a farce.

Burke County vs Sandy Creek this should be a great football game both teams are loaded with talent on both sides of the ball. I’ve seen BC on film and SC in person but I still think that SC defense is too strong. Don’t get me wrong Gator Green is a great player but the way SC defense flies to the ball is just overwhelming. SC defense line will put preessure on the QB all night long. #55 for SC defense line is a man playing among boys he can’t be blocked. I think SC will win by a touchdown.

@Great : I don’t know about that statement bro. Not saying that anyone is or isn’t better but, a lot of those rankings are based on genetic gifts.. Like the fact that Rob is something like 6′5″ 285 and has the muscle build of a grown man. You could also look at Bryce Ramsey vs Eddie Printz. Bryce is rated higher but, Printz’ stats blow Bryce’s outta the water. Bryce grades out better at the next level. That doesn’t mean that he is a better player right now.

@Woodpecker : Everyone seems to be overlooking BC’s D. Chris Washington “Hulk” is a beast. Im not making a prediction on this one but either team winning wouldn’t suprise me… A blow out by either would be a suprise.

Colquitt97’s link probably works just as well but if not you can go to the GHSA website. Click on the GHSA.tv link and it routes you to a website playonsports.com. I watched Sandy Creeks game on it last week since I couldn’t make it because my little one was sick and my wife was at work. I will say the audio picked up static a bunch. When the SC game was over I watched some of the Carrollton/Marist overtimes on the website and the audio for that game was clear as a bell.
