Maxwell Ratings: Computer likes 8-AAAAAA, even if only Parkview has survived

The Maxwell Ratings after the second round of the playoffs.

Remember that the ratings are not designed to rank teams based on their success in reaching the goal of a state championship. Otherwise, the top eight would be those still playing. Rather, the Maxwell Ratings rank the teams based on their scores from the full season. It’s evident that Maxwell thinks there are several teams that should be playing that aren’t.

Why is the title “Computer Likes 8-AAAAAA”?

Looks to me like it likes 7-AAAAAA more with the #1 (Norcross) and #2 (North Gwinnett) teams, and then the #8 (Mill Creek) team which is a virtual tie with #7 (Parkview). #1 and #2 seems more impressive to me than #3 (Grayson) and #5 (South Gwinnett).

Also consider that #1 Norcross beat #5 South twice by an average of 18 points (including knocking them out of the playoffs) and also shut out #7 Parkview (winning by 20). And #2 North knocked #3 Grayson out of the playoffs (winning by 18).

What am I missing with your headline?

So, if you take out the two teams that have lost, Lovejoy sit’s at #4. in 6A. Closer to reality than some might expect and cretainly closer than some are willing to admit.

@sportsnut. “Cretin”? … Naw… Lovejoy deserves more respect than to verbalize the dozens of comments that flew through my mind.

E. Paulding is still ahead of Stepenson even after a 34-6 loss??

@Rev Al: “E. Paulding is still ahead of Stepenson even after a 34-6 loss??”

The ratings are based on the entire season.

Also note that Stephenson lost to M.L. King by 21, who lost to Allatoona by 1, who lost to East Paulding by 18, and yet Stephenson is rated within five points of M.L. King. For these situations there’s simply no way to reconcile all the numbers, but the ratings represent the most likely mathematical solution.
