Stephenson 35, East Paulding 6
Running back Evan Jones and quarterback Justin Holman provided the touchdowns, but it was the Stephenson defense that made the difference as the Jaguars pulled away in the second half for a 35-6 victory over East Paulding in the second round of the Class AAAAA playoffs Friday in Dallas.
Jones rushed for 171 yards on 22 carries and scored two second-half touchdowns, and Holman had a touchdown run and a TD pass for Stephenson, which advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2006. It was the first road playoff victory for in school history for Stephenson (9-2), the runner-up in Region 6-AAAAA.
East Paulding (11-1) was the Region 5-AAAAA champion and trying to reach the quarterfinals for the third consecutive season. The Raiders fell one game short of tying the school record for victories.
East Paulding came in averaging 394 yards per game, but it was limited to 150 total yards and only 37 in the second half by Stephenson. East Paulding ran 12 plays on its first four possessions of the second half and gained yardage on just two.
East Paulding’s Kamani Thomas and Kyler Neal each rushed for more than 1,000 yards this season, but they were held to a combined 82 yards on 16 carries, which included a 36-yard run by Neal in the first quarter.
East Paulding never got close to the end zone, but it didn’t need to in the first half to come away with points. Kicker Miles Hemphill gave the Raiders a big lift on the final play before halftime when he kicked a 61-yard field goal to cut the lead to 7-6. It was the third-longest field goal in state history, according to the Georgia High School Football Historians Association. Hemphill had kicked a 47 yarder four minutes earlier.
But Stephenson quickly reestablished control. Jones ran 56 yards for a score on the second play of the third quarter to make it 14-6, and the Jaguars got the ball back two plays later when East Paulding quarterback Mitchell Webb was intercepted by Cameron Glenn near midfield. Stephenson drove to the East Paulding 30, where Holman threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Dexter Neal on fourth-and-8.
The Jaguars’ defense took over from there.

JAB is back from TICK TICK TICK TINKER BOOM YARD BABIES… After driving down I-20 & listening to a lady on my GPS telling me to go here, turn here and thinking to myself I couldn’t be a High School down these backroads, I finally arrived at East Paulding HS. I must say that I was impressed with the Cannon, the crowd and the Bone yard party, but not until their EP put there JV on the field against the mighty Jaguars that (ALL) of this week long, I heard how good they were, the only truth to EP was their filed goal kicker… WE crushed them on their own field even after the refs. tried to help them by penalizing the Jags to def., but the mighty JAGS only got stronger & stronger. NOW! One question where are all of the EP bloggers???? hahahahahahahahhahahahahhahahahahahahahahaahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah…

Well that was a bad way to end a great season… but a great run by the RAIDER seniors!!! Congrats to Stephenson…came into the “Boneyard” and gave us a whooping. BTW, that does not happen very often!
Region 5 goes 1-2 tonight against Region 6 with Allatoona taking out their #1 seed! Congrats to the Buccaneers, awesome job!!!!
@JAB – I was right on my predictions…no way you score 38 and our kicker did own you guys!!!!! LOL!!! Enjoyed the back and forth on the blog. Good luck the rest of the way.

Great game by my Jags. Classy win for them and the coaching staff. Lets keep it together. I enjoyed the facilities and the hospitality AT THE STADIUM. The only negative of my night is when I stopped at the store on the corner, and some kids rode past us with our Stephenson shirts on and yelled out the car NI$$ERS. Another fan said he experienced the same thing tonight at a gas station around the street from the stadium. They didn’t seem representative of the fans that I encountered at the stadium, but I’m sure they were East Paulding fans. Anywho, I kept it classy and our fans kept it classy at the game, and I’m proud of us for that. Enjoyed the game, keep it up Jags!!!

Congrats to my region 6 brother going 2-1 tonight…. Went to the MLK game…man they had their game won. They were winning 19-6 and a costly penalty on 4 and 12 gave Allatoona just enough yards to convert on 4th down and go on to score. Got them back in the game… It was the turning point. Anyway good luck the rest of the way region 6.

This Stephenson team isn’t NEARLY as talented as previous Stephenson teams yet they look much better in the playoffs then previous Stphenson teams.
I think Stephenson losing, earlier in the regular season helped them correct alot of mistakes . Previous Stephenson teams would go undefeated or lose 1 game at the VERY end of the year, so they never really had time to really correct weakness that maybe they werent fully aware of until being defeated. I believe Stephenson losing to MLK and Miller Grove really may have helped Stephenson in the long run…..MLK had alot of weakness exposed today that was never really a problem for them because they were undefeated and those weakness were never really exposed to them before so they could work on it and be a stronger team for the playoffs.

Congrats to the Stephenson Jaguars. They really took it to the Raiders last night. E.P. seemed a little flat all through the game but the Jags showed up to play some football. @ Dylan , your observation is right! We Region 6AAAAA played each other like mean vicious cats clawing at each other during the regular season. I’ve said that the early loss to MG and the butt whipping that MLk put on Stephenson was a true learning experience,. But when you look at it, the only weakness in Stephenson all year long has been their ability to defend the pass, and after last night Stephenson defense played like true champions. TO ALL OF THE PAST ALUMNI’S & D1 PROSPECTS THAT HAVE CAME THROUGH STEPHENSON, THIS ONE WAS FOR YOU!!!

To the STEPHENSON folks…GREAT JOB and also CONGRATULATIONS on bringing it RIGHT FROM THE START! You were prepared and the biggest thing all night was the difference between your “D” line and the EAST “O” line. Your guys were on the EAST QB all night and he had NO time to set up pass plays.
With the score 7 / 6 at half time it was still any ones game but ya’ll came out in the 2nd half and OWNED EAST! You did something no many other have and that’s come INTO “THE BONEYARD” and win a playoff game! GOOD LUCK the rest of the season!

only a matter of time, this is not uncharted territory, we have been here before. We have been to the third round before and the dome. The school has only been open since 96 and we have had alot of success. Do some research on the program before you spew off at the mouth. Fans are gonna be fans, so the ones on this blog that you feel like is acting like they have never been here before, they probably havent because they probably didnt follow us those years when we were there. Anyway it goes, we won the game and their happy, so their gonna boast a little for their team, there FANS man. Its funny how people say show class and act like you been there before, but if it was your team that won the game, you would be on the blogs bragging and doing the same thing. It’s sports, winners are gonna brag, stop being so soft man, are your feelings hurt? If we lose next week, there will be people on here bragging and talking bad about us, so the chain will just continue. I bet you wont tell them to act like they have been there before. So chill out, your probably bitter and hoped for us to lose or thought we were gonna lose. Great job Jags! As someone stated before and I have to agree. Stephenson has fielded more talented individual players in the past (just look at all the current pro and college starters playing right now), but this is a better TEAM, playing with less talent but more teamwork. The best thing that could’ve happened was losing those two games during the regular season. I think the TEAM learned from those losses and play with more “nothing to lose” attitude being the underdog.
I caution the Jags not to go down to Ware County overconfident. I attended both games against them the last few years and Stephenson beat them with Raymond Sanders and Mike Davis having spectacular games. The Jags will need a complete TEAM effort to take down Ware County this year. I’m sure they remember those games and will be seeking revenge.

@ Gator Bait..you’re welcome. I’m sure this will be a great game between two outstanding teams. Obviously I enjoyed the two previous Jags victories over Ware County. It made for much better long drives back home. I anticipate the same IF and only IF the Jags come in there and take care of business. Stephenson played in a very tough region this year. Every game was a battle (except one). I’ll leave the smack talk on this blog to the experts like JAB. However I don’t feel Ware County has had as tough of a regular season schedule as the Jags. Additionally, I feel the Jags are getting stronger with each game and unlike the past, is saving its best performances for the playoffs. With that said, I predict another whippin in store for the Ware County Gators. Cya Friday!

The main thing that I stated was that the QB was under utilized and that #23 was a beast. I told everyone who would listen that everyone talks about #28 but #23 was an every down threat.

@ Gator Bait, no disrespect but, Stephenson is the most complete team that they have every had, I know because I’ve been with them from the start, no big D1 players, no single RB but what they do have is a balance running and air attack! If you have followed them and went to every game like I have your analysis would be that they have had a severe break down in their secondary. The MLK loss was their inability to cover the pass, as so was the Miller Grove and almost defeat by the Mays Raiders. After Friday win at EP, you can truly see that these kinks have been worked out in practice.
Is’t true that the JAGS are getting stronger & stronger; I know for sure that Stephenson has the most to prove than any other HS team in the state of Georgia because of their past playoff failures.
It’s going to be hard for you guys to even play with the JAGS at this point mainly because of the strength of our schedule and like DeeDwag and others has said, we have a very tough region and almost every game have been a potential playoff game! The bottom line’ It’s our year, JAGS RISE UP JUST LIKE THE ATLANTA FALCONS**** YOU HEARD ME!!

@StephensonFan. . . . . .you are correct, I am a Lion supporter. I will be rooting for Tucker and Stephenson since I don’t have a dog in the fight anymore.
I was trying to give an EP fan an analysis of Stephenson and I believe I was pretty good with the analysis. #23 is very dangerous and can break it any play. #28 is strong/slasher type. QB is very good and in my opinion under utilized. Alot of people was not giving Stephenson a chance but I believe, many from Dekalb knew better. I believe they will beat Ware County.
As for MLK. . . . loss was very disappointing. I caught myself making excuses and had to stop myself from doing that. It’s too easy to blame coaching, so I won’t do that. So I would just say Allatoona was the best team that night and wanted it more. I know there will be feedback from some of the Lion faithfuls for my view, but I can take it.

@uncleJunior – remember seeing that cluster of Stephenson fans at the MLK games?…that was us. Remember us supporting and “high-5ing” every MLK big play? That was us. Trust this…we wanted it to be a region 6AAAAA sweep going into the quarter finals. MLK will be alright next year..lots of talent coming back, especially that QB. There’s only one game we root against MLK…thats the game against Stephenson. Otherwise we recognize the great talent at MLK. We appreciate your support as one of us (Stephenson or Tucker) will bring the championship back to Dekalb County again.

@uncleJunior…..an EAST fan here and saw your comments on Stevenson and I too over looked any running back that was going to run on the Raiders. The thing that we both missed was the D line size and speed of the team. EAST had seen Rome’s big back and the pair from Allatoona and shut them down. Stevenson needs to remember who makes those holes for the backs. It’s the lines. We had a pair that no one could stop but the Jags did. Our #28 Thomas would wait for the hole to open only to be cought from behind. Just wanted you to know we did see what you posted…just didn’t register to what we had seen all year.
