Alvin Kamara and Myles Autry made big plays, but No. 2 Norcross’ defense was the story in the Blue Devils’ 27-7 victory over visiting South Gwinnett on Friday.
Kamara scored three times, and Autry had a 22-yard touchdown run for the Blue Devils, who advanced to the quarterfinals of the state playoffs for the fifth time in the last seven seasons. Norcross (12-0) is 29-6 over the last three years.
The Blue Devils’ defense forced three turnovers and shut down a Comets’ offense that entered averaging 32 points.
Linebacker Kevin Mouhon and Bryant Henderson had drive-killing sacks for Norcross. Mouhon also picked off a pass and returned it 50 yards to set up Kamara’s first touchdown, a 2-yard run that put the Blue Devils up 14-0 early in the second quarter.
The Blue Devils recorded four sacks and held the Comets to 28 yards rushing for their second win over South Gwinnett this season. Norcross beat South Gwinnett 35-20 in Week 1.
South Gwinnett (9-3) had its opportunities to keep Friday’s second-round playoff game closer, but hurt itself with over-thrown and dropped passes.
Down 14-0, the Comets had a 1st-and-goal at the Norcross 4 late in the second half, but Jordan Ramey was sacked by Henderson on third down, and time ran out.
South Gwinnett would not threaten again until late in the fourth quarter, with Norcross up four scores.
Kamara’s third touchdown run of the night, a 10-yard burst out of the Wildcat with six minutes to play put Norcross up 27-0. The senior, who has offers from Georgia, Alabama, Florida and many other elite BCS programs, finished with 186 yards on 26 carries and the three touchdowns.
Autry had six carries for 67 yards.
The Comets avoided the shutout with a 5-yard touchdown pass from Ramey to Bernard Morrison with five minutes to play.
Ramey completed 19-of-28 passes for 183 yards.
