AAAAAA roundup

By Score Atlanta

Camden County 34, East Coweta 14: Visiting East Coweta could not contain Camden County’s J.J. Green, who scored two touchdowns to become school’s leading scorer. Camden County’s Antonio Wimbush scored on a 67-yard run in the third quarter. Quarterback Brice Ramsey threw a 25-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter for the hosts.

Colquitt County 26 Newnan 23: Visiting Newnan answered an early 12-0 lead with a Rodney Tennie 20-yard interception return for a touchdown and a Bailey Bryant touchdown pass to J.K. Britt. Colquitt County got a valuable late first half field goal to reclaim the lead. A John Boatwright 18-yard touchdown run would give Colquitt County just enough to edge Newnan.

Lovejoy 36, Marietta 15: Host Lovejoy fell behind 8-0 in the first quarter before scoring 29 unanswered points. Quarterback Alejandro Benefield threw for 152 yards and three touchdowns. Brandon Davis iced the victory when he intercepted a pass in the end zone and returned it 105 yards for a score.

Mill Creek 56, Brookwood 21: Host Mill Creek used four Brookwood turnovers to roll past the Broncos. Jacorey Lewis ran the ball 34 times for 252 yards and three scores. DeVonzea Felton added 78 yards on 11 carries and a score. Quarterback Daniel David found Michael Cheeks three times for 85 yards and a touchdown. David also rushed for three scores.

North Cobb 42, Langston Hughes 14: J’Vonte Herrod had four rushing touchdowns and one receiving for visiting North Cobb. Herrod opened the scoring with a first quarter rushing touchdown before teammate Nick Miller picked up a Langston Hughes fumble and found the end zone on the ensuing kickoff. Herrod extended the 21-14 halftime lead and the North Cobb defense forced a scoreless second half.

Parkview 23, West Forsyth 20 (OT): Visiting Parkview claimed its second road overtime playoff win in a row. Rob Youngblood found Mac Marshall for a 37-yard touchdown in the first quarter before West Forsyth quarterback A.J. Erdely answered with a rushing touchdown. Parkview’s Shaq Vareen scored the first of his two touchdowns before the half and after a blocked PAT the Panthers trailed 17-13. Vareen forced overtime with a game-tying 5-yard touchdown. In the overtime, West Forsyth was held to a field goal. Parkview then took over on the 15 and Justice Rosser took the first-down snap of overtime in for a game-winning touchdown run.

Anthony Jennings is the most over rated QB. He looked like a deer in the headlights. Lovejoy gave the ball back 3 times on roughing penalties and he still couldn’t put points on the board. As an LSU fan I was hoping to see more from him last night.

I’m not exactly sure of the specifics of Blake’s injury; however, it was said that he was taking off his own tape in the ambulance on the way to the hospital, and later sent Coach Flowe a text message motivating the Panthers to win. Fortunately, it looks like he will be alright; nevertheless, thank you for your prayers and concern. The entire West Forsyth family was extremely patient and respectful when Blake went down – a real class act.

@Bart I understand why you would say that about Jennings based on what you saw last night, but I have to remind you that it is also up to coaching to put players in positions to be successful. Lovejoy defense was in his face all night, particularly when our best pass blocker went out to injury. With that said, the coach can’t wait until 4th qtr to realize that he would have to move the pocket and run rollout plays. Lovejoy was too big and strong for simple drop backs on every play. When he FINALLY moved the pocket, and aloud Jennings to see the field without rushers baring down, Jennings was extremely accurate. Another dis-heartning thing was the sandlot trick plays that were attempted early in the game. It sent a msg to Lovejoy that we can’t compete with you straight up. That fosters no respect. We have ab explosive running back who is not used effectively and we run too many horizontal plays…not enough vertical passing. We realized as fans that you can’t run stretch plays on LJ and they were not going to allow Jennings to run, so that’s why you use your running back (who by the way is a sophmore who has not been allowed to shine as much as he could have. LJ wanted to make Jennings pass the ball; well that’s what he does best. Don’t send him up the middle on option read…not for this game at least. You can’t call plays from the field because you can’t see everything. Offensive Coordinators should be up in the box to see what we “dumb” fans see. Now, I’m not saying Marietta would have won or not, but you never know what could happen in a game. That was shown last night when LJ practically tried to give us the game on penalties; but we were unable to capitalize (in my opinion) due to play calling on offense. The defense played solid, but were put on the field way too often and too quickly. You just can’t expect them to hold for that long.

Anyway. goodluck to LJ. They deserve more respect in this playoff run.

Going in reverse here because I must first agree with Lovejoy#1. This is something many try but fail to accomplish. Not looking ahead is patience. Patience is a virtue. One game at a time is like breathing for some, necessary. Oh yeah, we do have love for our kids, period.
@ Big Blue Fan == I can tell you saw the game and are not just one of those blowhards talking trash. Youy are correct in your assesment on Jennings and the performance from last night. Great talent, bad coaching. Trying to ride him and him alone was a mistake. All the points you made are valid. I only take exception with your last remark about the blame lies with bad offensive play calling, esp-ecially after those penalties. Lovejoy’s D plays harder the closer their backs get to the goal line. No disrespect to Marietta’s players or their coachs but this is what Lovejoy does. They did the same to Joshua Dobbs and Cole Seagraves. 2 seconds are all you have. You better run it, throw it, do something because they will be there. Many of them.
@ LovejoyDad == It was not so kind before when I was having it out with all of Region 1. From Camden to Brunswick, I thought I had stumbled into the NFL by mistake in a dream. Sliced bread, the car, refrigerated air were all surely invented there. They are still alive with Camden and Colquit but so are we. @ Big Blue Fan- I agree that Bart was unfair with his assessment of Jennings, but I’m not sure I agree with calling out the play calling. Marietta knows that there best defense is a quick start leading to an early lead. Most high school teams aren’t built to come from behind. Marietta was unable to capitalize to build that early lead because Jennings was rattled. They had there chances: Mathis to Harris (Harris drop) would have been a score, and Jennings didn’t keep his eyes down field long enough on another play to realize Harris had broken free up the middle and would have been wide open for another score.

Bottom line – Lovejoy was too strong on the defensive line, and Marietta failed to build that early lead when they had the chance. It comes down to two plays really, and I think Marietta had the chance to put the Lovejoy D on their heels, instead of giving them the confidence to tee off the way they did.

sportsnut

November 24th, 2012
4:40 pm

@ Knockahoma == Not meaning to say it is not true what you are saying. it is. What you must understand is that this is what Lovejoy does. What you saw was not a game plan for defending Marietta, this is what they do every friday night. The exact same thing no matter the opponent. They say ” You Have 2 Seconds, 2 Seconds. Throw it, run it or you will see them” This is their way of thinking. Every down is 4th and inches, offensively and defensively.

Exactly the point I wanted to make. Lovejoy obviously wasn’t doing anything different from what they did against anyone else this season. They don’t have to since there are only a handful of teams in the state with that kind of size.

I was really trying to point out that I don’t think Marietta lost because of the play calling. If the Blue Devils executed for scores on the two plays I identified Lovejoy’s defense may have not been able to pin their ears back if they had to worry about getting burned again, They didn’t and Jennings started paying attention to his line getting beat instead of what might have been opening up down field.

Lovejoy has every reason to believe that they can win it all, but if they go up against someone with a big O-line, and a run stuffing defense I don’t like their chances. They don’t seem like a team that would be able to win if their defensive line is negated. A really big IF though since I don’t know if there is an O-line in the state big and strong enough to stop #40 and #50.

I’m pulling for a Lovejoy/North Cobb match-up in the semi-finals. I see a great match-up there.

sportsnut

November 24th, 2012
7:18 pm

@ Knockahoma == I get your point. You are correct. There were more than a couple of times where Marietta’s receivers got behind the Lovejoy Db’s but Jennings was under such pressure, he could not see this. Near the end, as you said, when they started to roll him out, things picked up for them. They moved the ball more in the 4th quarter than they did in the first 3. I doubt even if Marietta had burned them that they would change anything. Did you notice that they came after every punt with 10 men and no one to block for the returner ? They got 3 roughing the kicker calls to give Marietta first downs simply because that is the way they play. We do appreciate your support and best wish’s to the Marietta Blue Devils, both to those who will return and those that will move on to the next level and especially to those who will never lace them up again. Enjoy it. I would love to see Lovejoy vs anyone in the semi’s. I am like the team and will only look to the next one until there are no more.

Big Blue- I think Marietta has every reason to believe that this program has a bright future. Mathis is going to be stout at receiver and Benson has the chance to be the next great back out of Marietta. Anyone close to the program knows the lineage I am referring. Also, I watched the back-up QB in the second half of the Harrison game. I think he’ll be able to take the reigns and be quite a player for the Blue Devils. Burton is going to prove to be quite a developer of quarterbacks.

Cobb football doesn’t get a lot of respect across the state, but Marietta is just one of a hand full of programs in Cobb that are on the rise. I covered the Cobb teams for the local paper this season, and had a chance to watch a lot of the teams. North Cobb wasn’t one of them, but I did see Walton and Marietta and it seems that the Warriors have every reason to believe that they have a real chance to do something special this year.

Along with Mceachern, Hillgrove, Allatoona, Kell and Lassiter, Cobb should be able to end this pro-longed drought and win a State Championship within the next few years.

Lovejoy DID NOT fall behind 8-0. The actually scored first and with the PAT, led 7-0. Then Marietta made a TD on a scoop-n-score of a badly snapped FG attempt by Lovejoy. They then converted on a crafty two pointer to take a very BRIEF 8-0 lead. Fact_checker at your service.

It would be a huge mistake to take Mill Creek lightly.

I believe they are the largest high school in Georgia with a student body of over 3,400 students. That gives them a huge pool of athletes to draw from and these kids are very well trained coming through the GFL little league. If only because of the pool from which they draw, they are big and fast.

Mill Creek does extremely well across the board in athletics and academics.

So the football teams starts off with a ton of talent, and the coaching staff has sharpened their skills by playing some very tough teams on a regular basis. This year they beat, Peachtree Ridge, Collins Hill, Alpharetta, and Bookwood, among others.

Any team that takes them lightly in the playoffs will be watching girls basketball the following Monday.

Then there’s Gwinnett, and then there’s Georgia. Could be an all Gwinnett in the semis, though I find the chances remote. But Parkview does have a good D (was called ’slow’ by one of our experts here) and is the only game in Gwinnett next Friday. NG a great surprise. Norcross travels for a real test. Gwinnett represented well. 4 of the 7 move on, and the 3 that lost…lost to 3 other Gwinnett teams. Region 7 looks the strongest and has the top 3 still alive in Norcross, NG and MC, Region1 has 2. North Gwinnett over Grayson in what looked like a dominating game was a big surprise.

Anyone notice how this board is seriously quiet when Title-town is looking like tinsel-town with a lot of time to decorate the home for the holidays? Just sayin’.

The most complete football team in 6A. Not saying they can’t lose but this is the truth and right now people are starting to see it. North Gwinnett will be a test. A very good test. As long as Lovejoy plays Lovejoy football, they should be allright. North’s Michael Haynes has thrown for more than 2200 yards, probably with more attempts than any Qb still playing. Twenty-five Td’s and only 5 int’s as recently as 2 weeks ago. I know those numbers incresed in the last couple of games. This will be nothing new though, as the Cat’s have now faced some of the state’s best Qb’s. They have done a good job so far. North Gwinnett can score. It is their strength.
